Hey Scotty, New subscriber. I have a 97 Jeep Cherokee that eats antifreeze like there's no tomorrow. Is the head gasket blown? Seems to run fine. Holds a little in the tank but that's all. Thanks, Caleb'
@Boogiethrash could be lots of thing, watch my video 'how to fix an overheating car' and do all those tests, including the final head gasket leak test.
hey scotty i just got my first truck its an 1985 chevy s10 4x4 and im thinking about putting a 3inch body lift on it any help would be great and also im thinking about converting my 5lug axles over to 6 lug because i found a set of newer rims i want anything i should watch out for or ask about etc or any help would be appreciated thanks love the videos
@travis17360 personally I NEVER advise doing any of it, such mods often ruin trannies and suspensions, and putting any type of adaptors on wheels is dangerous. replacing the whole axle assembly is very expensive, not worth it just for wheels.
in the last two weeks my car smells like rotten eggs. I took to the mechanic they found out it was the battery problem because of altenator over-charged. My car is a mini van, Mazda MPV 1997. I have to replace the altenator, but I spent too much money already for this car. THis is the reason that I am watching your video so I can install it myself. I am not a handy man or anything technical though. Any suggestion? THanks Scotty
Hi Scotty I like u share knowledge, question I put my tester on the ground cable and battery negative as well and I get light on the tester , I checked the fuses and I unplugged the Dome fuse, and light goes away, what is that I'm getting a short, what do I need to do?
@12florencio if it only operates the dome, heck, leave the fuse out and the short will be gone. otherwise, trace all the wires going to the dome for a short.
what does it mean when my doors can shut themselves, and when it stops working i pull the fuse & put it back in, and they work again. but then it keeps happening every 2-3 days, where i have to pull the fuse
hey scotty i hav a 96 camry and i did this trick and light went out when i pulled off "dome" fuse any ideas where it could possibly be. i also noticed some of my dash lights burned out as i did this test. any ideas will be much appreciated thanx
@63ulices63 that test can not burn out anything, that's something else. But there is a short somewhere in the dome light system, all doors operate that and a lot of wiring, good luck tracing all that out, Me, I'd leave the fuse out.
Hey Scotty, I have a 03 Elantra and the headlights keep blowing out. The parking & High beams work. Both driving lights are the ones that keep blowing. I didnt touch the bulb, I used a light bulb grease. I did see a little water in one of the headlight assembly. I removed the water but they still blow. wires look to be in good shape. Hey scoty ... Thanks for your awesome videos. I have 1986 Ford F350 truck and someone hit the truck and broke the taillight. The tail light had 3 wires plug. I ordered a new aftermarket taillight and it came with a different kind of plug (only 2 wires). How do I connect the 3 wires that come from the truck to the 2 wires new light? Is there any way that it will work properly or should I buy the OEM light from the dealership?
Ok so I have 95 VW golf cl. The sunroof on it doesn't work and neither does the dome light. I've changed to fuse multiple times but they keep blowing. Whats up with that?
@sh115067 you have shorts in the system, and if you don't want to take the whole roof apart searching for it, live with it. probably from rust, being that old.
i have an 83 chevy k5 blazer, the battery is dying constantly (draining) even when its off and nothing is on. when i put the light tester on the battery cable like you did in this video, the light came on for about 2 seconds but goes out. i had the alternator checked 3 times and passed all times, i checked the wires and dont seem to find any cuts or burn marks or anything. so scotty, can you help me out bud? im really confused
@charger771 test it at various times during the day then, cause some drains come on and off. also do my more sophisticated test "fixing battery drain on your car".
Is it possible to that a relay or just a small circuit would cause a cab of a 93 s10 blazer to go out or do you think it's a whole wiring problem? Dome lights power mirrors cig lighters etc won't turn on even if the car is running.
Hi I have a question I have a 1987 Trans Am GTA with the Digital dash. When started the digital dash illuminates bright . When I turn on the headlights the dash gets dim also when I turn on the heater the car starts to bogg down and stall. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Scotty I love your videos you really are a big help for non mechanics like myself, thank you. I have a quick question, I have a 1998 Oldsmobile Aurora and the other day all of a sudden my in dash gauges went dead, the temp gauge, speedometer, gas gauge, rpm gauge, and my console unit which controls heat/air. The lights in the display are fine its just the gauges and power to console. The problem seemed to occur while I had the car in drive and turned on the hazard lights.
From this limited information do you thin this is a simple fuse problem or something more serious? Any info would be greatly appreciated and again thanks for taking the time to post these tutorials to help folks like myself out, you really are a great help.
@surpremeclientele actually in most cars it's pretty easy to get em out and unplug em, especially late model cars that just snap out and then 4 screws remove the whole thing.
@scottykilmer Thanks for the reply Scotty, I think I'll try buying a used one and putting it in myself. One last question, when you say unplug, are you talking of simply taking one connection out and connecting it to the new one, or does what your saying include splicing or something more complicated electronically? Also has ur website been down?
Ok I fixed it. It was the alternator took it to the auto store had it tested failed right away. Thanks Scotty look forward to seeing more videos to help me. Every time I search YouTube with my car problems u always have a video already up showing the fix thanks.
Hello Scotty I have a 89 Toyota supra that has a short somewhere. To start a few days ago my alternator stopped working so I replaced it. Then a day later it started putting out 18 volts so I replaced it again. Then a week later it started doing it again 18 volts. So then the next day my battery is dead down to .40volt. So I got a test light and did ur test. light came on so I pulled every fuse in my car and the light stayed on every went out. Also the car runs and drives everything works fine
@sonyps307 if the regulator is built into the alternator and not separate, you have bad wiring going to the alternator assembly, OR you're just getting crapper alts. If the regulator is separate, replace it. Scotty
Hello Scotty, I am having problems with my 1992 BMW 325i. When I lock my drivers door all the other doors unlock. i can crawl in the back and lock them but that gets annoying so what do you think my problem is?
@Mr325iBMW the interlock system is breaking down, probably the control unit. BIGmoney repair. Me, I'd just pull the fuse on the whole system and run them manually myself. scotty
Hi Scotty, First thank you very much for all your great videos. They have helped me out alot. Second Im having battery drain on my 77 MGB. I followed your instructions in this video, I attach the test light alligator clip to the disconnected negative lead and touch the negative post with the point. Easy enough except every time I touch the post the test light shorts and blows the light. This happened to 2 separate continuity testers. Any idea what this means or what I can do?
mr scotty hello again, hope you are fine!i did that test in my citroen xsara 1400cc petrol 8valve engine.and the light in the testing tool was flashing.if you remember my batt. died before 2 months because of the subwoofer.i changed it to a 62ah-600amps.the altenator is charging at 14.40v and when i check the bat.volt. when all is off there is no drop in voltage.if so why is the light flashing in the tester when i do your test?thank you!p.s:i removed the audio system i kepr just a cd player
@SRTHAR77 it flashes cause something is turning on and off. Pull the fuses out one at a time until the flashing stops, then that's the culprit. Scotty
@scottykilmer oh my god you are fast as the maglev train))!how can you do that whith the time difference between us?thank you very much mr scotty, you are very kind man.i will try it the day after tomorrow and tell you the results.

scotty sir just want to know that about this video..when i remove the fuse and if there is a short circuit then tester light suppose to be on or off.?
Hello Scotty Great Vid I will pick one up today! I Have A 94 Lexus gs300 having problems getting power to some of my power window switches (2 rear). The motors are fine when I hook them directly to power but not thru the switches. Any Ideas.
@silencekj yea, the main switches go out on those all the time, and they cost a king's ransom. You could rewire em with toggle switches if you want. One for up, one for down. Scotty
Hi Scotty, Nice work and i like the editing skills.
I have a problem with my Audi A4 B5 Estate (1996) central locking. I had a friend give me a hand to install an alarm system, while checking for the central locking switch wires we accidentally shorted one of the wire going back to the central control module. Now have no central locking. We have tried identical central locking modules, checked all fuses and relays. Reset the car batt off over night and still no central locking, .
@harun1984 Realize you need an audi dealer level scan tool to work on that system. He probably fried the module, and it costs a ton. You could only check it with such a scan tool though/ Scotty
I have a 2003 honda civic. My tail lights are out and the fuse keeps blowing after I replace it, obviously a short. Where do you suggest I start? I want to do everything possible before taking it to the shop.
I have a 88 cherokee... it started to lose power and not accelerate correctly, thought it was the transmission... once I had somebody to look at it the battery was dead and it had to be jump started, I got the battery tested at autozone they told me it was bad so I purchased a new battery... now it won't turn over at all... n when I hook my continuity tester up it blows the bulb in the tester. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Thanks, i've been watching your videos for the past 30 minutes. Could you recommend a good automotive book; something mechanics use to gain their in-depth knowledge on the why and how of the functions of the parts. (not exclusively electrical, this is just the video i chose to inquire)
@Sublime2O god, I haven't used a book to repair cars in decades. I use alldata.com for my information, and IATN.net for fellow pro mechanic advice. Scotty
@KinkNAbmx first just replace the turn signal flasher, it could be that. Any auto parts store can sell you one and show you where it is on their computer picture screen. Scotty
i have a 97 Honda civic ex and for some reason my driver side speaker only works when the door is open and sometimes the window as well and passenger window does same but i think window fell off brackets but i can hear the motor only work when door is open any recommendations as to exactly where i can find that short
Hey Scotty. I just put a new battery in my truck. Every time I use my turning signals or flashers, my volt gauge ticks in rhythm with my signal lights. Is this anything to worry about?
Hi scotty, I have a 1990 pontiac grand prix. All day today I've been having electrical problems with my car. The speedometer drops and then the anti-lock break light comes on for a couple seconds. At one point the car completely stalled, I don't want to think it is the alternator because it's fairly new and I'm getting a good reading from my battery. Is there anything I can do before I take it to a shop?
@nzullo tons of things can cause that, those cars aren't so hot as they age and have electrical nightmares regularly. First, have the battery and alternator load tested, places like auto zone check em for free. "New" alternators are normally just rebuilt and often don't last long. Scotty
I have a 99 chrysler town and country and its all jacked up, as far as wiring goes. The alarm goes off, sometimes twice a day upon unlocking and opening. the radio doesnt work, it just goes on, with no sound, and shuts off by itself. Now the turn signal or hazard lights do not work....and the other day, it would not turn over. I took the keys out and it still attempted to turn over with no key....where should I start? Im afriad of mechanics.
@tikafabulous start by getting rid of that thing and buying a better vehicle if you want my advice. chrysler vans are endless money pits as they get older. but if you want to try to fix it, start by doing the test in this video and check for shorts. Scotty
Hi Scotty, I'm struggling big time with a short. I've got a 1990 toyota that's shorting through the alternator circuit. I've pulled the alternator out of the car and stripped off all the casing around any wire harness immediately associated with the alternator and it all looks fine. I even tried spreading sections of wires to see if the test light would go out. Nothing. Is there anything else that might be on the alternator circuit I'm missing?
@Cmburgess5 rarely does anything go bad in those except the alternators themselves. If you do have a wiring problem, you will need to get your hands on a wiring diagram and trace all the wires from the battery to the ignition switch to the alternator. good luck. Scotty
scotty i got a lincon navigstor and i got a code that says epc solenoid short circuit whats this all about thanks, and by the way i love all you videos so helpful.
Hey Scotty, how would I go about repairing a short? I think that I have one for my rear defroster. It's a chevy cavalier and I heard thery're notorious for that problem. I'm going to try this test out. Thanks, Ryan.
i was going to get a pulley puller tool for a crankshaft pulley and just for other pulleys. do i need a special pulley pusher for my 1984 Toyota pickup 22r or can i use just a universal one?
Scotty, I have a 1998 Buick Century Limited. My car lights won't work right. It has a Day Night sensor in it so they should come on automatically. They did initially, well now they won't come on at all. Manually or automatic. For 14 months, I'd lean over and pinch a bundle of wires below the driver side dashboard while I'm driving just to maintain only high-beams. When I remove my hand they go off. I have taken it to several mechanics and I've waisted a lot of time and money on it.
@juggernautstark1 so much for modern crap GM technology. Me, I'd scrap the whole stupid system myself and put a toggle switch on the dash, and mount it to the lights from the battery positive to turn the stupid lights on. All that computer crap GM put in is nonsence as they age. Scotty
@scottykilmer I like that idea. I'm going to see what I can do. Thanks a lot, Scotty. If I fall into any trouble I will come back to you. I appreciate it.
Scotty after pulling the first fuse do you replace it back into its place before pulling the next fuse or do you set it aside and pull the next one? yiack! yiack! yiack!
I am trying to find our if my motorcycle has an electrical short. Will this method work and if so do I test with the ignition turned on (this automatically turns on headlights) or off? Thanks
i connected the car battery to the wrong terminals, blew the 100V fuse, had an auto electrician replace it, the car (runnex toyota) still not starting, what next?
@ChoiceCottagesDevon Never do that, it can fry everything from the main computer to the ignition system and fuel injection system. CHECK every fuse in every fuse box and pray it's just blown fuses. If not, get your wallet out and start spending at the mechanics' shops. Scotty
Ive got a 1994 ranger with a 2.3 and It want start, if put tried 2 new computers, ignition control module and had the coils checked, it stopped firing when a hot wire came off the Diode on my electrical panel under the hood, Im completely stuck, I just put a new computer on this morning and it still just turns over, and no fire coming from the ignition to the plugs. Do can anyone give me some suggestions please help...thanks.
@jerryjamify Ok, you seem to have electrical shorts, and NEVER put a new computer or any type of module in a vehicle with shorts, cause guess what? The new computers will burn out immediately. I would advise paying a mechanic to check your wiring, cause you may just keep burning up computers and modules putting new ones in and not finding the root problem. Scotty
@scottykilmer Thanks again for your reply..got my truck running, but when I first start it it runs ok but after I drive it for a bout two minutes it losses power and starts missing, I can trun it back of and re start and it runs fine until i drive it one or two miles and it starts running rough again..
I have a 2000 pontiac grand am gt.There seems to be a short thats draining my battery. There are hard starts sometimes acts like it doesnt want to turn over. Ive did exactly what you have said and it seems to be the cooling fan # 2 ground. I dont believe neither of my fans turn on at all. Also the short seems to be on the right side because my right turn signal flashes faster than the left side. Autozone said my altenator is bad. Advanced autos said nothing is wrong at all. What do you suggest?
@itsneyonikka I would then remove the old wiring to thge cooling fans and would rewire them to run every time the engine is started up, it hurts nothing. They you would bypass the short that way. But that would have nothing to do with your turn signal, it's a different system. I would also go get the alternator checked by a mechanic to see if it's bad or not. Scotty
my 2 year old shoved my money cards into my car cd player so after intense trying to retrieve them I go to put all the bits and pieces together only to discover that my cd/radio player does not work nor does the digital clock or the outside rear view mirrors that can move into close. I know its wiring. but i don't have the cash to go to a machanic can you help? i have a honda odyssey
@WillieWouldGo your only hope would be to remove the entire cd assembly from the vehicle, and take it apart, the covers top or bottom and see if anything is still stuck in there. good luck, but if it's ruined, get a better quality one much cheaper from an aftermarket stereo joint, I do em all the time and many cost less than a hundred bucks for a quality unit.Scotty
i have an 1986 cutlass 3.8 v6 and the car keeps stalling changed plugs/wire, cap/rotor,fuel filter, fuel pump, sending unit, changed vacuum lines, cleaned out carb as i was not getting any fuel and no start, now its starting but its stalling out as soon as i take my foot off the gas, timing seems ok as rotor is in position i was told it may be my timing chain, what do u think?
@MRdjDICKEY hook up a timing light , that will show you if the chain is bad by revving it up and watching the timing. If it jumps around, the chain is bad. Scotty
I have a Mazda Mx-6 1991. My battery died and I replaced it with a new one and bought another one. Everything worked fine but today it died again. The alternator and the battery are good but where would there be a short circuit on a car with it has no power windows, power locks, ect. Please help.
@ellelorena do this test and check for dead shorts FIRST. Then fix any you find on the circuit that has one. If the light does not come on, then you have a live short, VERY hard to find them, you'd need a mechanic then. Scotty
ok i have a 2000 dodge pick up and i have head lights but no dash or parking lights now i checked all fuses and they r all good but this am i took a wire from the positive post of the battery and then strted to check the wires that go to the switch and found that all i could get by doing that is dash lights now what can i do to find out how to get parking lights
@rbwell2003 try powering the parking lights directly by jumping a wire from the battery to the light switch power supply. If that works, rewire it that way. If not, time to start tearing out wires looking for shorts.
hi scotty i loved this vid. i actually learn something. well i have a question. i have my parking lights out i tried changing the fuse but it fried again immediately so i knew it was a short circuit. can i use this video to fix the problem? im pretty sure is my parking light because my side markers, and my cluster is also out. PLEASE give me your opinion and help me out as much as possible ive been on this mission for almost a year now and i cant find a place to help me
@Marlon02Gonzalez Yes, but you will have to trace the wiring to find the short, that's the hard part. But generally the problems occur at one end or the other, so check the non working devices first. Scotty
ye thats not what im looking for my car started smoking up and the electrical cords court on fire lucky it was a padok basher!! can any one help me out how to fix it. cos im like 13 years old and its hard ?
Scotty, would this be the best test for a 2000 ford contour or should I use the other one? My battery goes dead if I leave it off for more than a few hours or overnight. I just replaced the old weak battery so it wasn't that (though the battery needed replaced anyways)
@tan94319 It will work on any car, but for newer cars watch my newer video "Fixing electrical drain in your car" it's a more sophisticaed test. Scotty
you know you cant check the vehicles electrical faults in this manner. especially with newer cars and the computers and modules that were installed. your doing it all wrong.
@robd1215 This is an older video for older cars. Check out my "fixing battery drain in your car" newer video. It shows how to do a modern car with milliamp drain. Scotty
thank you for the video! time to go check continuity on my jeep. Its throwing error code p0340......i know its not the sensor...hope its not my computer!
hey scotty i own a 1998 lexus gs 400 and everyday i try to start my car before i go to work and before starting it it doesnt wanna turn on it theres a clicking noise in the hood and all i have to do is wait like 30sec and try to restart it just for the car run do you know what the problem may be?
@kvicks916 that's generally either a weak battery, or a wearing out starter. Have the batery load tested, then replace the starter if the battery checks out OK. Soctty
@kvicks916 generally, that's a weak battery, bad connections on the battery, OR the starter going out. All toyota starters end up clicking when they go out. Scotty
This video helped a lot!! Thank you! Now, I'm stuck. I narrowed down the fuse in my 2000 Ford Taurus to 03, which says Fuse Junction Panel in the manual. What is this?
@onepoeticromancer that's a main fuse that powers a lot of stuff. Start by removing the fuse panel and tracing the wires coming out of that fuse, OR see what stuff doesn't work when you unplug that fuse and trace it backwards from what doesn't work. Scotty

@Thumbseyyy depends where the short is, there is no "battery fuse" per se. You pull the shorted section fuse out, then the light goes out

From this limited information do you thin this is a simple fuse problem or something more serious? Any info would be greatly appreciated and again thanks for taking the time to post these tutorials to help folks like myself out, you really are a great help.
surpremeclientele 2 months ago
@surpremeclientele often the stupid dashes just short out in those, cheaply made in china. Most guys try a used dash as new ones cost a fortune.
scottykilmer 2 months ago
@scottykilmer thanks for the info Scotty, is a dash/instrument cluster something a novice can do or should I take his to a pro?
surpremeclientele 2 months ago
@surpremeclientele actually in most cars it's pretty easy to get em out and unplug em, especially late model cars that just snap out and then 4 screws remove the whole thing.
scottykilmer 2 months ago
@scottykilmer Thanks for the reply Scotty, I think I'll try buying a used one and putting it in myself. One last question, when you say unplug, are you talking of simply taking one connection out and connecting it to the new one, or does what your saying include splicing or something more complicated electronically? Also has ur website been down?
surpremeclientele 2 months ago
@surpremeclientele just plugs and un plugs.

@scottykilmer it's build in my alternator so the wiring going from the alt to the battery is bad
sonyps307 3 months ago
Hello Scotty I have a 89 Toyota supra that has a short somewhere. To start a few days ago my alternator stopped working so I replaced it. Then a day later it started putting out 18 volts so I replaced it again. Then a week later it started doing it again 18 volts. So then the next day my battery is dead down to .40volt. So I got a test light and did ur test. light came on so I pulled every fuse in my car and the light stayed on every went out. Also the car runs and drives everything works fine
sonyps307 3 months ago

SRTHAR77 4 months ago
@SRTHAR77 it flashes cause something is turning on and off. Pull the fuses out one at a time until the flashing stops, then that's the culprit.

Thanks

@harun1984 Realize you need an audi dealer level scan tool to work on that system. He probably fried the module, and it costs a ton. You could only check it with such a scan tool though/ Scotty

Is there anything I can do before I take it to a shop?
nzullo 7 months ago
@nzullo tons of things can cause that, those cars aren't so hot as they age and have electrical nightmares regularly. First, have the battery and alternator load tested, places like auto zone check em for free. "New" alternators are normally just rebuilt and often don't last long. Scotty
scottykilmer 7 months ago
Hi, thanks for your help.
Im afriad of mechanics.
tikafabulous 7 months ago
@tikafabulous start by getting rid of that thing and buying a better vehicle if you want my advice. chrysler vans are endless money pits as they get older. but if you want to try to fix it, start by doing the test in this video and check for shorts. Scotty
scottykilmer 7 months ago
Hi Scotty, I'm struggling big time with a short. I've got a 1990 toyota that's shorting through the alternator circuit. I've pulled the alternator out of the car and stripped off all the casing around any wire harness immediately associated with the alternator and it all looks fine. I even tried spreading sections of wires to see if the test light would go out. Nothing. Is there anything else that might be on the alternator circuit I'm missing?
Cmburgess5 7 months ago
@Cmburgess5 rarely does anything go bad in those except the alternators themselves. If you do have a wiring problem, you will need to get your hands on a wiring diagram and trace all the wires from the battery to the ignition switch to the alternator. good luck. Scotty

I have taken it to several mechanics and I've waisted a lot of time and money on it.
juggernautstark1 7 months ago
@juggernautstark1 so much for modern crap GM technology. Me, I'd scrap the whole stupid system myself and put a toggle switch on the dash, and mount it to the lights from the battery positive to turn the stupid lights on. All that computer crap GM put in is nonsence as they age. Scotty

jerryjamify 8 months ago
@jerryjamify Ok, you seem to have electrical shorts, and NEVER put a new computer or any type of module in a vehicle with shorts, cause guess what? The new computers will burn out immediately. I would advise paying a mechanic to check your wiring, cause you may just keep burning up computers and modules putting new ones in and not finding the root problem. Scotty

What do you suggest?
itsneyonikka 8 months ago
@itsneyonikka I would then remove the old wiring to thge cooling fans and would rewire them to run every time the engine is started up, it hurts nothing. They you would bypass the short that way. But that would have nothing to do with your turn signal, it's a different system. I would also go get the alternator checked by a mechanic to see if it's bad or not. Scotty

@WillieWouldGo your only hope would be to remove the entire cd assembly from the vehicle, and take it apart, the covers top or bottom and see if anything is still stuck in there. good luck, but if it's ruined, get a better quality one much cheaper from an aftermarket stereo joint, I do em all the time and many cost less than a hundred bucks for a quality unit.Scotty

ellelorena 9 months ago
@ellelorena do this test and check for dead shorts FIRST. Then fix any you find on the circuit that has one. If the light does not come on, then you have a live short, VERY hard to find them, you'd need a mechanic then. Scotty

@rbwell2003 try powering the parking lights directly by jumping a wire from the battery to the light switch power supply. If that works, rewire it that way. If not, time to start tearing out wires looking for shorts.
