All I want to say that I enjoyed the movie, because for me when it's about movies or music, it has to move me.
I get your point that no one wants to see self destruction and prefers happy stories. But the goal is to understand how a relationship is not perfect and in the road you get harmed in so many ways that eats you alive, and the film nails it
Anyway, I heard you saying Lars and the real girl, but would you recommend it (as a hole movie not only Ryan's performance)? I'd REALLY aprecciated
@diane199021 I don't actually agree with your second point and I'm hoping my viewers don't all take it that I would prefer to see a happier story. In Blue Valentine, I think the point is overdrawn to show a relationship deteriorating, instead of simply existing imperfectly. It's so unbelievably raw that any sort of natural filter - which occurs in real life, too, not just in film - has been removed. But that's just my own opinion.
@diane199021 And on the subject of Lars and the Real Girl: Really great movie, albeit very peculiar and a little bit of a stretch to be clever. Nancy Oliver's script is genius, though, and Gosling has a lot of supporting help from incredibly funny people: Emily Mortimer, Patricia Clarkson, and Paul Schneider are each excellent. That movie came before I began doing reviews, but it's still fresh in my mind. See it and let me know what you think!
@WeJustGotBetter Hey again. First, thank you for giving me your opinion, I watched it and I knew Ryan's performance was incredible as a disfunctional guy, but what I really loved it was the interaction between all the supporting characters to Lars and of course Bianca, personally who shines the most (after Ryan) is Emily (completely heartbreaking in the scene where she yells to Lars).
And my comment for Blue Valentine, I guess maybe for me wasn't difficult to see it. And again, thanks!!!
You're a good reviewer and your insights into the films you're dealing with have become more incisive as you do more pictures. I enjiy your reviews despite the synch issues.
Sorry, Sean. Sound sync fail... but I enjoyed your review anyway. I don't know how Williams was nominated fro an Oscar and Gosling wasn't. I can't think about one performance without thinking about the other. I guess the Best Actor race is just too crowded... Great stuff.
@colaguy29229 Yeah, I noticed, but sometimes computers glitch at all the wrong times...As for your comments, I both appreciate them and agree completely. I thought Gosling was the better of the two, though the "better" is from a very close call and Williams deserves all her glory. I thought Gosling was better than Jeff Bridges in True Grit, but otherwise, the Best Actor race is swamped: Eisenberg, Firth, Franco, and especially Bardem all deserve their noms just like Gosling. Don't forget to sub!
@WeJustGotBetter I haven't been able to see Biutiful yet. Of the 20 nominated performances, I'm missing Nicole Kidman's in Rabbit Hole and Bardem's. Both of those films haven't opened here yet, but I'm anxiously waiting..... I've been subbed for a while, but sometimes I get lazy about commenting. lol
@colaguy29229 I'll be reviewing Biutiful soon, it's a bit on the terrifying and emotional side, but still excellent. As for Rabbit Hole, I know it feels good to see all the films nominated for a major Oscar (it allows me to feel capable as a critic just accomplishing that much), but it's not particularly great, in general.
no no no no no, she was not happy with him.... he was the one trying to save the marriage.
