It's great to see Behrens live as Salome for me because I never did see her perform. In 1986, I was only 6, so I missed out on hearing many fine singers who were still singing during this time. I think she did a lovely job especially when she sings to the head of John the Baptist but her voice is still too light and lyric. The parts that come before when she is demanding to have his head call for a more dramatic, big voice. It seems too much for her.
Thanks a thousand times for this video! I never realized there could be a video of Behren's Salome, for me the most genuine interpretation of all: youthful, somewhat naïve and amazed, but nonetheless capable of cruelty and selfish coldness. Her voice was exactly what Strauss meant for the part.
