You made good choices, Finale. Especially Rubinstein, Li, Zimermann, Arrau. There must be about half dozen other versions around with equal merits, comparable to the interpretation of Emanuel Ax. But I don't think they are 'finer'. So I stand by my original opinion of "hard to imagine".
I envy you. I am yet to see Ax perform live. I live in Pittsburgh and he has been playing nothing (to my knowledge) other than the Emperor Concerto when he comes to here. Am not a fan of that work.
Anyways, Ax is such a magnificent pianist. Its really wonderful you have seen this man perform, and Chopin none-the-less.
I saw Zygmunt Krauze perform on Chopin's Birthday (in his honor) at the Frick Fine Art's Auditorium, but he is no Ax.
Zimermans beginning is much more dramatic with longer pauses and greater dynamic excitement and contrast. Similarly, he brings out the lyrical theme with completely more colour, which overall in my opinion, gives the piece a much better interpretation...
To Dantever123 & callenishss: please post your performances so we can tell how superior you are to this artist. I was overwhelmed to hear that you can best this superlative interpretation!
What an amazing rendition!

Last Wed. NY, Carnegie Hall was filled with "Chopin is a Love" , the warmth... even in the snow storm had to stop and enjoy..
A snowy celebration. solemn opening chords of Chopin's Polonaise-fantasie.

EuphoricDan;
The gentle Polonaise with beguiling elusiveness,
Emmanuel AX is truely maginificent pianist.
We shall all celebrate Chopin's 200th annv. and Schumann as well.
Thank you for your reply.
Good luck with your music world.
