  • so very true, death metal has a pocket too!

  • How does he blast so clean like that? Does he alternate the snare with the bass drum or the hi hat/ride ?

  • @klootzaak1975

I spend more time listening to the notes if they are not separate im not happy

I try to line up my right foot and right hand before adding different patterns with the right hand its Just a single foot blast roll

    just takes practice

    Tim

  • This video was actually very helpfull. I also enjoyed watching how you do the heel toe technique. It has helped me out tremendously in my double bass playing. Makes it so I can play faster without wasting all of my energy.

  • You are entirely soulless with your drumming. I see why you don't play in any impressive bands.

  • @VBTpowVio Yeah, b/c all of that AWESOME VBT drumming has SOOOOO much "soul" to it.

  • Hi Tim,

I'd just like to say im a huge fan of your playing and actually appreciate the information you've contributed to the drumming community, unlike some others... :) Please keep it up. Your tips have helped me in numerous ways, thanx!!

    Jarod

  • your kick drum sounds like crap

  • good explanation Tim.

  • Funny thing is, due to the fact my left hand is a terrible fail, I play blasts left hand 16th's, left hand 8th's, and kick 16th's (seeing as I'm not playing at the super fast speeds, since I want songs to be jammy/groovy when I write drum parts, and blasts just don't have that hook that causes an emotional response, as opposed to a 2-step or a stomp part)

  • Dreadful sound, the kit doesn't sound balanced. The bass drum isn't present at all, only the resonance when he stops playing. Hi-hats are way to trashy and so prominent the snare gets choked out. Good tips though. Perhaps do a video on tuning your drum kit? Just a thought.

  • Wow wait Tim...i didn't saw the whole video...just the beggining...you actually got me interested in blast beats for the first time in 10 years i've known this type of music.

  • And if you slow it down it sounds like a cheap town square drum. Ha...and people consider that music evil.

    Argh...boring.

  • im having trouble speeding up my bass pedal hits. are you using swivel technique here?

  • wow! you play very well! congrats man! i wish someday i play like that!!

  • are you irish?

  • Not bad for a ginger!

  • Great explanation & breakdown. Nicely done. Thanx!

  • thanks alot man!... ima single bass drummer thats been tryin to learn blast beats, this is the most heplful thing ive seen \\m//

  • well said!/ done . your the man!

  • dude, could i like borrow an axis pedal? my pedal is too slow.

    also amazing video.

  • Very informative. Thanks

  • Im sorry tim,but watching your responses to some of the people,It just makes you look like a dick,No offence,You attack people randomly xD But I still respect you,But just lay off the cockiness :)

  • @6sic666666 Ive gone through All my responses and dont see any cocky/ or random attacks like you say thats not my personality

    confused??/

    tim

  • THERE YOU HAVE IT!!! YOURE ACCUSING ME OF ME ACCUSING YOU YOURE COCKY!!! =O xD

You dont have to,Im messing with ya

  • @TimWaterson Yeah I didn't see any cockiness.....but you look like someone I knew who was cocky so I'm still mad....but then you kind of remind me of a girl I used to date who was really sweet. Now I'm confused....(she was really sweet!) ...think I'll go outside and pee on a chicken. I live on a farm so I can do that! Actually I'm learning a lot from you! Thanks for your posts!

  • Thanks,Hey,let me have one bass drum and one tom for free, youre rich,You dont need all that

  • damn, i need to work on my blast beats.......

  • I feel much more comfortable at the moment blasting with my left foot, even though i play a right handed kit (I am ambidextrous) but if i want to get a fast double kick roll, will i need to work on my right foot and get it to the same level so that i can blast with either, or just keep single foot blasting with my left?

P.S. Also, how can i work my hi-hat tightly when blasting if i'm using my left to blast? or is that a reason to work on my right?

    Thanks Tim :)

  • figured this out on my own

    1 ped = 1 snare?

then double peds = blast beat snare

    am i right?

ofcourse considering the high-hat or cymbals

  • tim, can i look after your house when you go on holiday?

  • i love that tripletbeat! tim rocks

  • You da man!

  • exactly...it's a beat....not a fuckin psychedelic freak out hahaha. people need to realize that when learning it.

  • ??? what i sed excellent tim why u being mean to me?

  • comfused dont see any negative comment to you

    Tim

  • Excellent TIm !

  • I used to dislike Tim for being too cocky.

this video showed me better, and i now believe you re a cool drummer. i know it wont make much of a difference to you, but yeah, im glad i gave it another shot!

Keep posting stuff like this up man it's very informative :)

    OH NOES! thumbs down?!

    haha fuckin idiot.

  • Great video tim!

  • dude, you are awesome!

  • Thats a great video and very informative.

  • I agree with the triplet thing.

so many metal drummers play blast beats out of time

  • true that, but technique won't matter a shit if you aint got the power tho, cause i've seen lot of drummers live actually playing the right technique, but theire so fixed with technique that they've forgot the power,so what you and up hearing is ofc the bass drum becouse of the triggers and some hi-hat once in a while,so non work without the other.....

  • But are you doing heel toe or any other techniques? If you're not doing any technique and you're doing one footed blasting... hell to your ankles.

  • I genereally swivel my angles to get more volume

    Tim

  • Ahhh... The old swivel. =). Thanks!

  • i have always wondered. have you always used a double pedal or did you ever have 2 bass drums? i know that many double bass guys like 2 bass drums better...

  • There are videos of me playing 2 bassdrums on my youtube page

2 bass drums can be more musical and dynamic .

I play clubs in a duo and a LOT of stages are small

    Tim

    Tim

  • good man Tim.you are awesome.I have been using the GK swivel.with two strokes per side,I can say it helps me a lot.your videos do also! thanks man

  • Wowzers this is amazing! I've been listening to lots of music with this sorta blast in it, and have never been able to work out what it is or how it is done. Thanks for this vid, hopefully there will be more to come :D

  • TAMA drumsticks and drums i think

  • heeeey this gay is really awesom thanks man

  • Tis true. You have to take one foot at a time counting not trying to just blast your way through it going fast. But you also have to have a tecnique on how to do it. I have one video showing it, it's not the best but, it explains how to go about one footed blast beats and how to get fast at double bass using your ankles. Check It out.

    CHEERS TIMMY!

  • do u use the flying fingers technique?

  • I like that there is actually a video of blasting, with a single pedal. You are correct - work one foot at a time.

  • Tim, thanks for all the great info; my hearing is pretty shitty and I can't really hear what your doing on the kick. Could you split screen your feet or mic things? Thanks

  • i take back my last comment.. you know what your talking about but your other video SUCKS

  • I wish my drummer would listen to your logic...... he's the classic open hat, Animal the muppet behind the kit, but musically it could be way tighter and better.....

I really enjoy watching your videos, as a bass player, it only makes too much sense!

  • great very good

  • What Kind Of Snare Do You Use?

  • I think its tama

  • pause it at 0:03 and he sort of looks like a blond ozzy osbourne. nice vid helps me alot

  • I don't even play drums and I enjoyed watching this, lol.

  • thanks helped a lot

  • ur a really good teacher man.

  • you da man.

  • this is dope dude.

  • wow you're awesome dude! thx :D, i really like all your lessons and the videos with fast double bass

  • Hey Tim, you got some great videos up here, thank you. I just started playing true grindcore, and am looking into buying new cymbals. Any suggestions? Also, what hi hats do you use in this video? They sound great open.

  • splashes. lots and lots of dirty splashes. lmao.

  • grindcore cymbals?, lots of splashes and chinas, one big ride, and a load of crashes, i thinnk meinl byzance are best

  • Hey Geddy

  • how do you get your hi hat ti be slanted?

  • Buy a good stand.

  • Hi Tim, I've been playing for 5 years now and I have been frustrated because I cannot play proper blast. This video helped me a lot but could you tell me a little hint that could help me with training? Thanks in advance :)

  • well i do love a triplet blastbeat

  • Do u have enough drums in the background

  • Lennon? You?

  • hey tIM THIS IS Derek I want to thank you for this vid it got me on track I saw this when you first put it up and Ive been workin on my blast.

I posted my vid as a reponse to yours mine is the one with the front angle on the drums tell me what you think

  • correct me if im wrong, but it looks like your only using your wrists, are you using finger control? I cant tell sorry =/

  • It's Tony Laureano man

  • I enjoy your videos, But you have a lot of philosophies.(sp)

  • OK, who is the third "top notch" drummer he mentions at the end around 3:30? It sounds like "Tony Lorino" but Google is coming up short on that. I understood George Kollias and Derek Roddy from Nile, and of course, Pete Sandoval from Morbid Angel. But, who is Tony Lorino? Lorito? And who does he play for?

  • nachtmystium, angelcorpse and others

  • Tony Laureano is how it's spelled, and he's also played for Nile (In Their Darkened Shrines iirc), Nachtmystium, Angelcorpse, and a ton of others.

Derek Roddy was also in Hate Eternal for a while.

  • Good info. I'm going to go back to one foot blasting again. I can tell I'm in better time with one foot, but I just get tired quicker. I guess being in time and getting tired quicker is more important than being out of time and not getting tired. Thx for posting the video.

  • good

  • pete sandoval is never forgotten inmy book.. PETE THE FEET.. anyways... make a tec vid on how to speed up your hands please.. not everyone is as gifted with the opposite hand =D. anyway's thanks for the vid.

  • im not allowed to play blast beats in my band lol, good for practicing technique though :)

  • not allowed? what style music are you playing?

  • i didnt get a word he said.

  • Black metal is awful.

  • dumb ass he has two sets right next to him. urrrrrr.

  • Good job, Tim. Keep up the good work, don't let the naysayers get you.

But taking into account what you've already achieved, I probably needn't tell you this anymore ;)

  • wheres your toms? your set sucks

  • Check to his right ;) :P

  • wow i've know what he's dais but never could get the clear pisture of how play it, but just by hearing i tottaly get your points, very well said proly one of the best videos i've seen

  • you should show how to blast using more drums than just a bass and snare

  • Dude, you are my hero biggest influence without question.

  • thats sad

  • All you do is criticize other drummers. Let's see you do it, shit head.

  • the truth, what a pitty he did not mentioned to play relaxed, and not to squeeze your muscles to manage to play in time. Many beginners seem to play unrelaxed blast beats, which can seriously hurt your wrists and ankles.

  • i just learned so much ..... goddamn this guy is good

  • Glad you like the clip and glad it helped

thats why i post clips to help drummers not SHOW my chops

    Tim

  • love the vids, suscribed \m/

  • very good post tim, i know alot of metal drummers who blast sloppy with no feel, its all about getting that tight roll between the hands and feet, i believe you can reach higher speeds with 8th notes between two feet and 16ths over top with the hands though... doing it one footed can burn you out, unless you're george kollias or derek roddy of course, but check out torturer in the belphegor rehearsal video's, also the dude from dark funeral, both faster speeds then kollias and roddy.

  • that sounds great

  • Your an excellent teacher, thanks for your kindness as its great to see your work on line.

  • Yeah he speaks the truth

  • This is good i like it. it helped me!

  • One foot blasting has the most advantages

    Great video Tim!

  • THE BLASTING GLASSES!!!

  • i agree, practicing one foot is much better, coz u can check if its all in time or not.

  • how the fuck do u play so damn fast

  • hes jesus

  • clearly jesus practices drums and releases instructional DVD's

  • Dude can you please teach me

  • dunno about you, but ive never heard buddy rich blastbeat ever.

  • is that right? well put out or shut the fuck up cock sucker! i doubt very much you could manage playing a straight 4/4 pattern, your probably a bass player! so go fuck yo momma, after i finish with her and your daddy. bitch!

  • Is that the best you can do? My parents are dead, so what does that leave moron?

  • Yourself! lol

  • why is your hihat tilted?

  • I think his whole kit is tilted

  • Really helpful video but a slight contradiction in that the blasts on the ride at 3:08 fall out of time abit, the bass drum goes in unison with the snare then back out...

But I don't think that matters too much because Tim's trying to help us/teaching so thumbs up =)

  • God, I love you. I don't play metal but I'm really really into stick control and such and I have always been fascinated by blasting and I always practice blasting at around 135, but with single pedal, except I play play the 16ths with my right and left hand (double stops) and split it with the bass drum. Essentially, what you are playing with your left hand, I just switch with my feet. I kinda like the way you're doing it better though hah. Great video =)

  • good teacher.

  • strange hi-hat U_U

  • Lousy Smarch weather.....

  • hey tim im 12 and i wanna know what sticks are those i personnally like the thomas lang sticks

  • They are MY Promark signature sticks size 409

    Tim

  • I'm so glad my blast beats have groove to them like these, my bandmates used to say blasts didn't need grooves! I showed them what it sounds like with no groove and they were shocked at the different sound, they hated it with no groove to it! Thanks Tim! You rule!!!

  • great video, very informative

  • all those drum sets in the back....

  • You are the wise man of drums

  • sorry the one with the blue kit not the other one, cus thats really old

  • can i ask u wot u thinking of my blasting? ill post a video response to which video i mean, please and thanks

    tim = wise drummer aha

  • hey tim great video one thing, i use the looser hat in my blasting but not for any cover ups, i like the sound it adds to the blast, kind of a chain rattling noise, but i see just what you mean about it can cover mistake

  • loose hi hats sound fuller

try opening and closing them to add accents to the blast.

    Merry Christmas

    Tim

  • thank you!

  • incredible video Tim. I love the examples of triplets. The accents sound great

  • Once again, great video Tim!

  • What band are you playing in?

  • I am goin on tour with judea san pedo till January and I am recording drums for the Hyperspeed project while we are on the road.

Check out myspacedotcom/timwaterson for more info this month

    Tim

  • Nice dude, keep it up!

  • nice one!

  • Exactly how i do my blasts, But 2 footing is best when you want the snare, hihat and bassdrum to be on the same note, that gives mroe of a solid pushing feel then the alternating blast.

  • this was very helpful....thanks

  • Nick Barker is one of the few guys who can have a groove inside of an insane blast.

  • trym

  • Flo from Cryptopsy has some sweet blast/groove chops as well
