College is an investment in your future? That statment sounds like a phrase right out of Eddie Bernay's handbook.
And that little factoid about college earnings are 81% more doesn't mention all the millionaires and billionaires who went to college, many of whom say college didn't teach them the things they needed to become successful at business.
"It is an investment." Don't tell any of the kids at the frat house doing keg stands that their precious time at the college is an investment or they might actually make something of themeselves. And so you think of your education as a stock or portfolio? If that's what you think education is, you don't deserve one. And most certainly you didn't get one. Maybe you got training at a college or school, but no education. What a rediculous statement that was with modernism written all over it.
You missed the point. Many believe that all they need to do is go to college and a job is guaranteed (RISK FREE). The comparison with stocks was to show that there is risk. Beyond that I made no qualitative statement on the educational system (as you made it seem).
I love and read the Enlightenment philosophers (in their respective languages) with care and passion as I consider it part of my heritage. But this approach is something that you will not gain from today's university system.
High school guidance counselors should tell students that maybe college is a REALLY bad idea. In 4 years there are going to be fewer jobs and a lot more collection agencies going after student loan debt.

It is an investment. Investments can naturally go either way as there is risk involved. Just like with stock portfolios, nothing is certain.
