Well.. ive been to the Philippines 4 times for a month each time and never had a concern about my safety. traveled through out.. Many foreigners live there because so cost effective and the philppine lady so beautuful.. but be careful .. .. I do agree with the comment below me.. Philippines is really a lot (7107), the beautiful islands. Greetings from Finland with 56 000 lakes (more than 1ha in size of lakes). The big difference is that the Philippines is always warm water in the ocean. but in Finland, the lakes freeze over in winter.

Anyway, I just spent 6 weeks away in Boracay and I escaped the worst winter in 20 years in the USA. It was absolutely paradise! The people were so nice and the weather was awesome! I never did work out why the Philippines stank so much when I was there. It's just a dirty place, I suppose, and the excessive heat rots everything perishable. But I can at least describe the all pervading smell that was everywhere, especially in Cebu: it smelled like a mixture of camel dung and rotten clits.

Who would want to go to Cebu for an holiday? I went for Xmas and New Year! It was awful! No proper sanitation nor hygiene, unbearable boiling hot weather, terrible food, armed police and beggars everywhere. people ripping you off everywhere you go, people talking cebuano sounded llike dogs barking (the primitive language is so nasal and guttural, if you can call it language!). Believe you me, if you value your health and your state of mind, DON"T GO TO THE FILTHY PHILIPPINES FOR AN HOLIDAY.

Apart from the awful heat, far from being the most hospitable people in the world, i find filipinos generally to be lying, conniving and deceitful. I live in UK, we don't have beggars here, the government locks them up. We don't have armed police because the crime rate is so low in UK. i am too wise to get ripped off but dislike the attempts to do so.

@glenpovey: based on your description you must have been passing by Colon St. along the tartanilya's route, these are vehicles powered by horses and that is the reason why it stinks along that route. One of the most beautiful island in the philippines is cebu where you get to have a mixture of rural, simple, refreshing living and classy urban living in such short distances and with beauty more than you would likely expect.
its such a shame that you could only afford Colon St. for sighseeing. am surprised you couldnt go to even just a white sand PUBLIC beach to have a good time, 5 pounds each individual is more than enough for you to do this. you were really that tight financially huh? next time you come make sure you have saved 5 pounds from your hard-earned money so that you could go to a public beach and have a good time here in Cebu.

Wow! There are some really strange people leaving comments here! They better come down from their golden palaces and learn how to embrace new things and just let loose! Anyway, I just spent 6 weeks away in Boracay and I escaped the worst winter in 20 years in the USA. It was absolutely paradise! The people were so nice and the weather was awesome! I'm looking forward to exploring more of the Philippines in the future. I love it!!! Don't listen to those nay-sayers. They are soooo full of shit!!

Like my pinoy friend Joseph, for example, who has been trying to leave grotty Cebu for years and has finally just been granted his visa to come to live in UK. In my opinion God created the Philippines for the sole purpose of making everywhere else in the world look nice by comparison

@milopotpot Oh yes, I almost forgot..... if you go for an holiday in the Philippines you will be shot by sa kinuwanggol nga pulis - like those unfortunate EIGHT (count them eight!) tourists who were shot DEAD by that policeman in Manila - so that is another good reason to avoid the Philippines like the plague. Mind you, if you go there you'll probably die pretty quickly from food poisoning before a policeman actually shots you.

I never did work out why the Philippines stank so much when I was there. It's just a dirty place, I suppose, and the excessive heat rots everything perishable. But I can at least describe the all pervading smell that was everywhere, especially in Cebu: it smelled like a mixture of camel dung and rotten clits.

Who would want to go to Cebu for an holiday? I went for Xmas and New Year! It was awful! No proper sanitation nor hygiene, unbearable boiling hot weather, terrible food, armed police and beggars everywhere. people ripping you off everywhere you go, people talking cebuano sounded llike dogs barking (the primitive language is so nasal and guttural, if you can call it language!). Believe you me, if you value your health and your state of mind, DON"T GO TO THE FILTHY PHILIPPINES FOR AN HOLIDAY.

@p3yz I am married to one too! Every year i dread having to go to Cebu to visit the parents and family.... it's always two weeks of living hell. Apart from the awful heat, far from being the most hospitable people in the world, i find filipinos generally to be lying, conniving and deceitful. I live in UK, we don't have beggars here, the government locks them up. We don't have armed police because the crime rate is so low in UK. i am too wise to get ripped off but dislike the attempts to do so.

@glenpovey: based on your description you must have been passing by Colon St. along the tartanilya's route, these are vehicles powered by horses and that is the reason why it stinks along that route. One of the most beautiful island in the philippines is cebu where you get to have a mixture of rural, simple, refreshing living and classy urban living in such short distances and with beauty more than you would likely expect.

its such a shame that you could only afford Colon St. for sighseeing. am surprised you couldnt go to even just a white sand PUBLIC beach to have a good time, 5 pounds each individual is more than enough for you to do this. you were really that tight financially huh? next time you come make sure you have saved 5 pounds from your hard-earned money so that you could go to a public beach and have a good time here in Cebu.

@glenpovey we do admit that lots of pinoys go abroat but that is because they want to earn bigger salary. some got the hang of living abroad that is why they are still there. every pinoy abroad, who think they have saved enough money and are sure they would not run out of it, would want to go back here in the philipines especially in cebu if they are cebuanos and spend their lives here in this beautiful country.

The greatest resource in the Philippines, is it's people. I have never met a nicer group of people anywhere. I have enjoyed my visits there, and my Cebuan wife and I will be retiring there in four more years. I cannot wait!

Within reach of Manila. Puntarivera Resort, whilst not cheap, is beautiful.

The Philippines is such a beautiful country. Overpopulation is a major problem that will be hard to solve because the Catholic Church does not condone birth control. The Philippines is the size of the USA's Nevada, which has nearly 3 million people. The Philippines has over 90 million people and growing fast. The government needs promote birth control fast, for the health of the country.
