hahaha made my day.. and thanks for all your help man.. i subscribed:)

  • Great video, but could anyone tell, why when I enter cd /home/andy/bibus-0.8.0 says there is no such directory, and there is definitely such folder. How to overcome this issue. Many thanks

  • @andriusj7 maybe case sensitive, try using tab to auto complete

  • yeah ... This is really a very good tutorail video. I (supernoob) finally understand how to install damn files on ubuntu. Thx a bunch dude !

  • im trying to install the software for my pci lan card....when i try to run ./configure under the proper folder....it doesnt work....any ideas? (imma noob to linux)

  • downloaded thunderbird-8.0.tar.bz2 file. Did all the extracting and cd into the right folder, but ./configure says no bash directory. Same problem with make and other commands. There is no install or readme file and google was'nt much of a help either. Any suggestions? Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

  • It says it does not have an ''acceptable C complier''. I'm trying to install Pidgin on Xandros

  • @Ograws the only c compiler i know on linux is called gcc, for c++ is called g++

  • @gotbletu ok i feel pidgin won't work on Xandros anyway

  • Haha this was an AWESOME tutorial!

  • What do you do if you get an error for having a different version of the required library? e.g. it errors saying cannot compile without libpng when you have libpng12-0.

  • @KeenKro gotta install or compile that 1st then

  • I don´t get it this. Everyone is a genius these days. I am trying to install a tarball. The first problem I encountered was "You do not have permission". What? Then after some headache I found "sudo". Alright then, next. From where do I start? I guess the place where the tarball is. Extract manager helps me when I cick the file.

Extract it where? Someone said home/local/scr or something. Can´t do it. I do not have permission to that folder. Goddamn. That´s pretty much where I am at.

  • @Marblescollector This was quite some time ago, 5 months to be exact ha, but if you still need some help I'd be happy to give you a hand.

  • you're the man... all that garbage online and this video hooked me up... thnks!

  • top guy that was a great help spot on

  • what if you do not have the configure file?

  • Woo Hoo I stared using my linux mint partition a lot this week. I also tried to install Couturier PDF and found out debs don't work on Mint. This video is helpful and I actually compiled my first tar file successfully.

  • when I enter the path it says ((No such file or directory)) and I checked the path for about 20 time and still the same massage.

  • This is by far the best FKN video TUT I have seen Online dude!!! Fnk AWESOME! Specially the detailed description as to how to perform the STEPS! "Fnk this, Shit that". Straight and to the FKN point. Keep it up BRO!

  • The most weird thing is (./configure) with (make) and (make install) works fine in BackTrack but when done in Ubuntu 10.04 for me the files isn't there i'm wondering what's up this that, but i can't give up i must find a way to install tarball in

    Ubuntu 10.04

  • This made more sense than all the websites and forum threads I've tried to read about this subject in the past hour (talk about a waste of time...) I'm now off to try it.

I do agree with you - compiling is a PITA. But more than that, it makes me feel like I've regressed back to my college programming classes - 30 years ago. Not exactly a forward progression, IMNSHO.

  • @kimadawest lols

  • @flare495 You're Welcome

  • Thank you so fuking much (fail and everything!) I never would of made it if I kept bagin' my head against the ubuntu forums with people looking at you from above and not telling you anithing exept "sude make install" like that's the problem and getting to that step isn't!

My problem was mounting as "cd", I couldn't without knowing what you had to type in REALLY looked like.

    GOD! thank you!

  • @TatsuJB lmao, i know exactly what u mean. I got tired of those idiots, they sound like they are helping but they aren't doing shit

  • @gotbletu thanks man, since I'm starting here in ubuntu, and it's getting to look like something I think I'll start posting up on youtube, a noob's help helps the noob best... and thats how you progressively take windows down, by briging them to the side with cookies!

BTW, what recording program do you use? and if out of unbelievable chance you know how to get past the godd-damn glib problem wich you might already know of:

    configure: error:

*** GLIB 2.27.5 or better is required.

    thaks anywh

  • @TatsuJB im using ffmpeg x11grab to record, think theres a gui for it called Kazam. yea u need glibs, which is probably an older version on ur system, u might have to compile that also since the program requires it.

  • @gotbletu Thx, ya I no, I've been compiling like a madman ever since your tutorial, no worries, except every god-damn verion of glib I try doesn't satisfy god damn GTK! (latest version)

I filed in it's required needs for ATK, panda, GdkPixbuf, Cairo

but Glib still remains, no way of makin' it accept any verison of it, A lot of people talk about it but I'm bangin' my head against other walls...

Anyways, you don't have to bother thanks for all you've already done for me! Good bye, Mr. Anderson.

  • @gotbletu thanks man!

  • Thank you for not editing out the errors you had, any time i try to do stuff i get errors. and it sucks to watch a video where everything goes so smoothly for them, but errors for you. Thanks This Video Helps LOTS

  • @LoRdVoODoOChilD to make it show up in the package manager, u have to use checkinstall, watch part 2 is better

  • "What is this shit?!"

  • dud, thanks

  • lol and the next one... "what is this shit??" LMFAO great tutorial man...u have no fucking clue what u were installing to make the file install and u fucking did it LMFAO LFMAO 3:20 btw thanks thumbs up. Google was no help until i found this video on youtube. They should be more specific in they're "READ ME" instructions. Ur video link should be included in all read mes whos with me on "this shit"? :) BTW i have to compile cuz of a plugin not included in repos. :( &ur vid is perfect w/ errors :)

  • LOL!!!! Dude this is a good Video you made...All those trials and errors are exactly what we "noobs/ Linux Wannabees" go through!! LOL!!! So thanks dude!

  • LOL!!!!

  • easy learning for the nubie like me!

    thanks!

  • I loved this video! Your manner of speaking is "fuckin' awesome".

I too am an armature at compiling, and I wish that compiling shit was at least consistent. I mean really, each time it's slightly different.

  • terminal keeps saying no such file or directory after I type "cd /home/sam/desktop/emr-3.0" -.-

  • @Polyuncoki is case sensitive, capital D on Desktop

  • @gotbletu thanks a lot :)

  • i sat here watching your videos for almost a year now tht i've been subscribed and i thought you always compiled ur stuff /: wow... and good to see you do it cuz i would ALWAYS get error's and i could never compile any fucking file.. thanks for the info man.

  • great tut, thanks bro.

  • thank you very much

this video explained a lot fore me

maybe you can make a video there you install dumphd

  • also sometimes there isnt a uninstall specified in the make file in which case you need to go to usr/local and go through all the files there and delete the ones pertaining to the program you installed because that is where make installs them unless specified otherwise :)

  • @nolanhester1 damn if i had to hunt down every single file to remove it, ill go crazy lols

  • great video :) i usually compile most of my stuff because the program usually runs faster than a generic binary because it is specifically compiled for your system :)

  • Thanks this video is very helpful.

  • thx for the video , also there is something called package converter. which help . u can find it in by Google. it makes deb and rpm . better than Compiling

  • @amb1402 yea i have a video on that, is not the same thing, thats converting rpm to deb, or vice versa, this is install from source ur not converting anything

  • Hey, @gotbletu - a nice shortcut on the command line for your home directory is using ~ (tilde) so in the case of moving into the tar ball folder at the start of the video:

    cd ~/Desktop/gelide-0.1.3

etc. Just a suggestion if you are interested. Of course, tab completion works when using it as well. Thanks for the videos though, it's great to see some high end user graphical tools that you demo.

  • @curtisbridges24 yea thanks i knew about that, skip that part since most newbies will get confused if i put a swiggle line lols

  • All those missing files would just make me want to go back to windows...linux is just too much work and time waste...not user friendly

  • gotblutu nice vids (screencasts)

  • nice! i think you are the first to make a tutorial on this! i have like 3 stuff i wanted to install but i gave up!

    thanks!

  • what i really hate about compiling on debian based systems is how you're usually required to install a bunch of -dev packages and most of the time the program doesn't tell you the dependencies, so you're just left to guess or give up. compiling shouldn't have to be this hard but its what i hate most about linux. that and driver support

  • Thanks for this! The errors your ran into are actually the most helpful part:) Because we all get fucking errors all the time >,<. I love your no bullshit attitude towards linux. Your just like me, just want the shit to function and dont touch the terminal/compile stuff if you don't have too. I lol'ed when you did the extract suff^^ So true! And so newbie unfriendly. Guess some ppl just like to show off their AWSOME terminal matrix skeelz-

  • Don't disparage the errors. It will help other people that run into those errors.

  • can you please make on video on all the programs you have??? like a whats in my menus video. That would be awesome to see all the crap you use :)

  • Great video really helped me out mate keep em coming. :)

  • very good informational video... thumbs up x10 keep up your good work...ive been watching since day 1 :)

  • @italianboi1390 oh wow, double hi5 for loyalty =)

  • there u go bitchesse!

  • nice job men.

  • "so for all the newbies that thought compiling was hard ... it is"

    #LOL

  • thumb up

  • Cool video. I'm a total terminal newbie in linux. Are there any tutorials that cover the barebone basics?

  • @GetJesse metalx1000 has some good terminal tutorials. I learned the basics by looking at his bash tutorials.

  • @Gurka9999 Hey thanks for the suggestion. I just checked it out and those videos will definitely help me.

  • installing things in linux is the biggest pain in the ass... why all software isn`t made to just press install like skype and google chrome, and using terminal is so 95!

  • @reinismix0lost most things install very simply when using .deb files or grabbing stuff from the repository using synaptic. Very rarely do you actually have to compile anything yourself anymore, but often, a simple make install command is all it takes. Difficulty of installation is really a thing of the past now adays.

  • @reinismix0lost there are DEB files for debian and .RPM for redhat distribution. but sometimes when they are not packages yet for you distro you can compile. there is more than 20 ways to install anything in linux and comiling is just 1 way.

  • not bad, son,

pretty soon ur gona be a master linuxer

  • Excellent :) Even the errors were useful because you show what to do to solve the problem. If it had all gone smoothly I wouldn't have seen that :)

  • @mousegeek VERY TRUE !!!!

  • Hey, great tutorials. I really like them, and they are the best of youtube. Anyways, what theme is that, and what Linux distro are you using? I assume you are using Ubuntu. But anyways, great tutorials!!

  • @FloobenShnooben

    its on the title :)

  • @linuxpowerification whoops... lol. I feel stupid now... But I still dont know what theme he is using...

  • installing from source is pain in the ass, fuck that.

  • What you always drinking man?

  • @OrdosSiegeTank agua

  • best linux videos on youtube!

    tired of all distro reviews.

your videos are handy, useful and clear for both newbies as me and experts!!!!

    thannnks

    signed, the bitches... :)

  • I think the errors help more. this way newbies will know not to panic when they see an error, and go and search in synaptic. :)

btw, if u compile and install synaptic doesnt know about it and the only way to uninstall is if the Makefile has rules to do so. So as a precaution i try configuring it with a prefix to somewhere like /opt. if it works out well only then I do a full "make install" without any prefix.

    as always, good video. :)

  • Instead of "sudo make install", do "sudo checkinstall" (with checkinstall installed)

    checkinstall will make a deb.

  • @commodore256 hey thats big pimpin, level up for me, Thanks!

  • Great vid mean, keep them coming! Compiling sure can suck sometimes >.<, good ol' .deb files ftw!
