I'm going to hit up Springer Mountain this spring, and head north. Great videos, great knowledge. What do you think your tolerances are for this type of sleeping over a longer period of time? Obv. it's a very independent/personal question, what one man can stand vs another is totally unique. But I was curious what you would be willing to tolerate, what you would change for a longer hike about specifically your sleeping arrangements. (assume temps do not drop below freezing)
@intenseangler That's certainly the plan, though I'm just going to say "I'm starting in GA and heading north for a bit of a jaunt" haha. I live in NY so I've gotten to hike alot in the Adirondacks, and thru-hiked the Northville-Placid Trail 2 summers ago. Packweight=51 pounds with food and water, haha. Outrageous. I still logged 18-24 mile days don't get me wrong, but it absolutely killed my feet. Your videos are fantastic, I'm sure it took a lot of time but us future hikers thank you!
I'd caution against using your padded mylar blanket over your bag on multiple nights as it will act as a vapor barrier and keep moisture within your down bag. You would do better to put it within your bag (it will act more like vapor barrier clothing then) - you'll be sweatier/clammier but your down won't get wet.
@topshotrhit I definitely agree with you. I'm glad that you made that point here. I had been testing out my DIY down bag and wasn't fully confident in it at the time... the blanket served as a great lightweight backup.
Vapor-barrier clothing: Check the article in THE COMPLETE WALKER IV, Colin Fletcher & Chip Rawlins, page 517.
In THE 2 OZ BACKPACKER, Robert S. Wood, page 52: A big trash or garbage makes an admirable covering for your torso once you cut holes for your arms and head to make a plastic vest. Put it next to the skin, tuck in your pants, then put on a relatively snug shirt....Properly used, VB clothing will increase your body warmth by an astounding 20 degrees F.
@tahoeric Thanks for taking the time to send this info man, I appreciate it! I'm gonna have to mess around with this. I can definitely see this getting a bit sweaty though, as you said!
Love the suggestion with the windshield protector sleeping pad!
On another note: Have you ever experimented with Vapor Barrier clothing? I tried a VB vest (made from a plastic grocery bag) under a tee and was amazed how warm it was.
@tahoeric I haven't even heard of Vapor Barrier clothing to be honest. I am officially intrigued now though! Is there any was that you could send over some info regarding it if you get the chance? Thanks!
FYI John. If those PA tablets your carrying are the iodine type you should be advised that they are not effective against Cryptosporidium (beaver fever). Chlorine Dioxide tablets on the other hand are. Chlorine Dioxide tablets come sealed in individual foil packs and it only takes one tablet per liter to treat your water. I switched to Chlorine Dioxide tabs about 1-1/2 years ago.
@Woodenarrows Thanks for the tip Jim... I was not aware of that! I've been meaning to switch over to the CD tabs anyhow (can't stand the iodine taste). Fortunately I have never gotten sick from water yet (and I used to drink directly from streams in my younger, dumber days lol).
@steintanz I use that thing year round my friend. It weighs practically nothing, yet does an outstanding job at reflecting body heat back. Of course, when it gets colder I use a closed cell foam pad under it (actually I do most of the time, except on these hip pack trips), but it does good by itself down to around 40 degrees or so.
I think you fogot the link to your friends channel. I'm sure you will post it either here, or in one of your later vids. As always, great info! Thanks for sharing and off to see part 3!
@rondygal Thanks for mentioning that my friend. This series was epic to edit and upload... glad that's done, whew! Finally got the chance to go back through them all and add the links and annotations... hope I got it all right :-)
Thanks for the great compliments too... really makes it worth it when good people such as yourself take the time to provide me with such positive feedback!
That filter Bill came up with is bitchin' eh :o) He's making a couple for me Too :o))))) The greatest guy!!! Of course I may not be able to use it until next spring....haha! We're already hitting -2c at nite and have already got snow In the lower mountains around town. Lookin' great dude. Very lite!
@Ggreenvideos I love that little filter Dude!! And you're dead on right about Bill... one of a kind, damn good man!
You've already got snow up there?? That's crazy Brother! Heck, I'm not even ready for Fall yet... let alone Winter :-0 But then again, I'm no mighty Bushman Of The Yukon either ;-0
@intenseangler Well I'm not the bushman I wanna' be either...haha! Yup! snow in the area. Nothing in town but did get a quick little snow storm yesterday :o) One big cheer for Bill eh! :o)
@cyclist01222 I don't know about that, but thanks for the awesome compliment Brother!! Really enjoyed your last trip video by the way... thanks again for sharing that!
