Silver is probably my favorite character in the Pokemon series.

He actually feels like a true threat at first, but later realizes his foolish ways and becomes a good trainer. For a child who grew up watching the anime, Silver was just perfect character development at it's best.

There's a large part of me that thinks certain things in HG/SS weren't true to Gold/Silver/Crystal (no actual Game Corner [barring the Japanese version], Lyra being the female player instead of Krys, and renaming the male protagonist to Ethan, for example). There was also no Card Flip (even in the Japanese version). I doubt that very many people even give a "Magikrap" about the changes with the protagonists, though. At least it was officially confirmed that the Rival is Giovanni's son.

He'd mock you at every turn, always have higher level pokemon, be a step ahead of you and after you beat the elite four he was there waiting for you with an inflated ego thinking he was the most powerful trainer in the world

@TheDuskDemise I will give credit to Gold/Silver, though. The rival in that one looked and acted like he had an evil alterior motive, such as always talking about how he hates weak pokemon (and your character for that matter), but he also had an antihero moment when he called Team Rocket weak. In my mind, that goes beyond the realm of rivalry, which added much more depth to his character than other rivals.

In RBY, Gary (motherfucking) Oak was just an asshole.

It was hinted in Fire Red and Leaf Green and later and later shockingly (not really) revealed/confirmed in Heart Gold and Soul Silver in the Celebi time traveling event. The "Pokemon adventures" (manga) counterpart for the rival was directly confirmed to be the son of Giovanni but at the time it was as far as i know nothing more than an artistic liberty taken by the series writer. That concludes this weeks Pokemon lecture.
