He was so great Booker Erwin but is totally killed by Dexter Gordon in a strange 2 song be-bop album 35 min. mid-sx-ies (Prestige records?, in Gordon name). They where Drunked, Stoned but Dexter Gordon played at his best!!
Absolutely Great!! Fantastic playing, sound and video quality. What more could anyone ask for? That's what I love about YouTube -- finding gems like this that I never knew existed. I don't know where you got this but thank you a million times over for uploading it so everyone can enjoy it.
I met Edgar Bateman today at my place of work. What an honor to meet someone who has played with Dolphy, Ervin, Dickerson.. So glad to find this on Youtube.. thanks so much!
Somehow the timing has me thinking it is Jimmy Woode as Jamil Nasser used to be "George Joiner" and was out of "Memphis with George Coleman and Harold Maybern and then with Ahmad Jamil.
Try as I might I didn't see but a wisp of the bass player so it is just my "mind's eye" talking!
Okay so we have Edgar Bateman, Booker Ervin, Nathan Davis, Pony Poindexter, Kenny Drew, and Ted Curson. That leaves the bass player. Anyone who knows please tell us!
I've always loved Booker Ervin I think he is one of the most under appreciated tenor player ever of that era. I've always wanted to see video of the great edgar bateman. Yes, i agree that Space Book is a fantastic album
Ted Curson used to host the late nite jams at the Blue Note in NYC - very interesting to watch.....I think I recall reading somewhere that Booker said Trane listened to him and got his sound?

The flute player is Nathan Davis and maybe Jimmy Woode is on bass and Edger Bateman on drums. Under Ted Curson's name this group, without Pony and Natah, recorded for Fontana label at Baan, the Netherlands on May 13, 1966. This video is better than that LP!
Who's the drummer? he's great, I thought at first Alan Dawson becouse he plays on the Book series albums by Ervin (man that stuff smokin' should be mentioned with Miles Smiles or A Love Supreme)
About 20 minutes ago, on a South Philly corner, I was talking to Edgar Bateman for about an hour and a half. We talked Drumming and Boxing. I am glad to report that Edgar is in "Good" spirits.
wow - what a great little band that was - whew! - thank you - too bad there's not a video of sonny stitt & booker because the album/tape/cd titled Soul People is a great listen.
LOVE Booker Ervin!!! He's in my personal top 5 ALL-TIME favorite tenormen (along with Dexter Gordon, John Coltrane, Ike Quebec, and Stanley Turrentine). I can see why Charles Mingus had him featured as a principal soloist on many of his classic big band recordings during the late-50s/early-60s period. Shame he never got recognized the same way Coltrane and Sonny Rollins did as he was indeed one of their peers and just as influential. Died fairly young, too. Did I mention he was self-taught???
Did a little research on this as I posted the clip on my blog. It looks like it was filmed in 1966 around the time Ted Curson recorded The Urge in The Netherlands for Fontana Records. That would mean the bass player is Jimmy Woode. But Ervin is the only sax on that session it looks like the band in this clip never recorded together. It's a great clip and newly didcovered jazz footage is so valuable.
dliberg, thank you so much for posting this clip. Booker Ervin is one of my three favorite tenor saxophonists (the others being Dexter Gordon and Illinois Jacquet). Ervin could best be described as a "modern" Texas tenor. Thanks again.
I know Booker Ervin of course but who are the others on this video. I know that Bateman is the drummer and played with altoist John Handy and assume the pianist is Kenny Drew. Any info would be appreciated.

OK.Bateman and Curson were both from Philly. Was this recorded in Music City in Philly?
wunoteu 2 years ago
This song has that rare quality of being an "up-tempo ballad."
Even though it is fast paced, there is still a lyrical, introspective undercurrent that seeps into your soul.
Certain composers like Mingus were masters at this style.
A ballad must be played at a slow tempo ?
poetictube 2 years ago
No, it does not.
