  • He was so great Booker Erwin but is totally killed by Dexter Gordon in a strange 2 song be-bop album 35 min. mid-sx-ies (Prestige records?, in Gordon name). They where Drunked, Stoned but Dexter Gordon played at his best!!

  • Pony is blowing hot!

  • Booker Ervin was one of the best. I love his sound!

  • Awesome!

  • tearin' shit up..

  • I think this video would get more views if you included the actual song name 'Milestones' in the title

  • @5:07

    "I want it"

    -Kenny Drew

  • Isto é siblime !

    xF - Rio de Janeiro

  • Ted Curson, Booker Ervin, Nathan Davis, Pony Poindexter, Kenny Drew, Jimmy Wood and

    Edgar Bateman.

  • That's Pony Poindexter on Alto Sax!

  • and how about the fruity zoom camera work on the last head?!

  • who is on alto?

  • @jaleelshaw Pony Poindexter on alto!

  • great

  • R.I.P. Edgar.....

  • R.I.P. Edgar! You will be missed.....

  • is that reggie workman?!~?!?!?!

  • @szumo1982 That's Jimmy Woode on bass.

  • Another Legendary jazz musician has passed on. RIP Edgar Bateman!!!!

  • Absolutely Great!! Fantastic playing, sound and video quality. What more could anyone ask for? That's what I love about YouTube -- finding gems like this that I never knew existed. I don't know where you got this but thank you a million times over for uploading it so everyone can enjoy it.

  • I saw the Bassist. It is not Jamil Nasser.

  • Where would all these comments be if - YOU ALL POSTMAN'S CARE TO NOTATE, WHO, WHEN AND WHERE!

  • Smokin' hot performance. Does anyone know when and where this version of "Milestones" was recorded? Is it on CD?

  • Fantastic!! They where great. Erwin and ofc Dolphy. Eric Dolphy one of rhe!

  • @jazzuffe yeah - that's not Eric Dolphy.

  • OK.Bateman and Curson were both from Philly. Was this recorded in Music City in Philly?

  • This song has that rare quality of being an "up-tempo ballad."

Even though it is fast paced, there is still a lyrical, introspective undercurrent that seeps into your soul.

Certain composers like Mingus were masters at this style.

A ballad must be played at a slow tempo ?

  • No, it does not.

  • wait....that is not JAMIL NASSER!

  • Hey Zues! He's 80. Can't we throw him a parade or something? Hello Ars Nova?

  • I met Edgar Bateman today at my place of work. What an honor to meet someone who has played with Dolphy, Ervin, Dickerson.. So glad to find this on Youtube.. thanks so much!

  • Bassist is Jimmy Woode

  • Believe the bassist is Jamil Nasser.

  • Somehow the timing has me thinking it is Jimmy Woode as Jamil Nasser used to be "George Joiner" and was out of "Memphis with George Coleman and Harold Maybern and then with Ahmad Jamil.

Try as I might I didn't see but a wisp of the bass player so it is just my "mind's eye" talking!

  • Okay so we have Edgar Bateman, Booker Ervin, Nathan Davis, Pony Poindexter, Kenny Drew, and Ted Curson. That leaves the bass player. Anyone who knows please tell us!

  • Comment removed

  • They play so fast and efficient....I love this...I think that's why Milestones have to be one of my favorite universal Jazz songs....

  • I forgot what Song this was....wat is it??

  • Milestones.

  • Milestones.

  • @KELH1990 Milestones

  • I've always loved Booker Ervin I think he is one of the most under appreciated tenor player ever of that era. I've always wanted to see video of the great edgar bateman. Yes, i agree that Space Book is a fantastic album

  • @upgroov

    jimmy woode on bass

  • There is no i repeat no jazz album better than booker ervin's spacebook and booker ervin's freedom book. They are on a par with love supreme!

  • What constitutes "Better?"

  • Ted Curson used to host the late nite jams at the Blue Note in NYC - very interesting to watch.....I think I recall reading somewhere that Booker said Trane listened to him and got his sound?

  • Ted Curson used to host the late nite jams at the Blue Note in NYC - very interesting to watch.....I think I recall reading somewhere that Booker said Trane listened to him and got his sound?

  • Someone have this concert for trade ?

  • Who play alto sax?? '-'

  • The flute player is Nathan Davis and maybe Jimmy Woode is on bass and Edger Bateman on drums. Under Ted Curson's name this group, without Pony and Natah, recorded for Fontana label at Baan, the Netherlands on May 13, 1966. This video is better than that LP!

  • Alto player looks like Pony poindexter. He stayed in Europe for a long time.

    Booker Ervin is GREAT!

  • ted curson on trumpet, altoist is not donaldson and drummer is not dawson

  • booker ervin a hearty saxophone with a special gospel tone so much underrated! i suggest the excellent Candid album "that's it"

  • who're the players?

  • a revelation

    made my morning bright

edgar bateman on a south philly corner

    amen amen amen amen

  • On alto is that Lou Donaldson? It sure looks like him.

  • Who's the drummer? he's great, I thought at first Alan Dawson becouse he plays on the Book series albums by Ervin (man that stuff smokin' should be mentioned with Miles Smiles or A Love Supreme)

  • Edgar Bateman Jr. he lives in Philly now, he's still playing and sounding great.

  • Yeah, I think he's the real star in this recording. the horns just kind of muddle through I feel.

  • It's a really rough tempo.

  • ...sorry for the typo...just wanted to clarify my last comment i meant he was 74 not 94!!

  • I played in a group with Edgar right before I left Philly....for about a year...what a monster learned so much from him...he was 94 at the time.

  • who's on the band?

  • About 20 minutes ago, on a South Philly corner, I was talking to Edgar Bateman for about an hour and a half. We talked Drumming and Boxing. I am glad to report that Edgar is in "Good" spirits.

  • I LUV BOOKER ERVIN HES AWESOME!!!!

  • wow - what a great little band that was - whew! - thank you - too bad there's not a video of sonny stitt & booker because the album/tape/cd titled Soul People is a great listen.

  • LOVE Booker Ervin!!! He's in my personal top 5 ALL-TIME favorite tenormen (along with Dexter Gordon, John Coltrane, Ike Quebec, and Stanley Turrentine). I can see why Charles Mingus had him featured as a principal soloist on many of his classic big band recordings during the late-50s/early-60s period. Shame he never got recognized the same way Coltrane and Sonny Rollins did as he was indeed one of their peers and just as influential. Died fairly young, too. Did I mention he was self-taught???

  • Wow

  • man booker.....so much emotion, that's what i love about him. he really know's how to make that horn sing.

  • The world could always use more Booker Ervin videos. That tone alone could make my heart stop. (Everyone else is awesome though)

  • Ahhhh....the REAL deal. Jazz of the highest caliber. Bravo!

  • this is so cool. thanks a lot for posting this. booker is one of my favorite saxophonists.

  • @kmm0010 check out "Revenge" by Charles Mingus [sextet live] - Booker is extaordinary

  • EVIL. Thanks for the heads-up, Hugh.

  • nathan davis playing flute from the 60,s!!!

pony pointdexter ripping it up nice!!!!!!!

    hugh

  • Who's that flute player?

    He looks so familiar...

  • nathan davis

  • Ah so.

I used to have one of those Saba sides.

    Very nice player.

  • young edgar!! still super bad.

  • Did a little research on this as I posted the clip on my blog. It looks like it was filmed in 1966 around the time Ted Curson recorded The Urge in The Netherlands for Fontana Records. That would mean the bass player is Jimmy Woode. But Ervin is the only sax on that session it looks like the band in this clip never recorded together. It's a great clip and newly didcovered jazz footage is so valuable.

  • Pony Poindexter on alto?

  • Habe Curson selten so inspiriert gehört! Wunderbar!

  • i just played with edgar bateman tonight in philly he still sounds great.

  • Book cooks !

  • Ted Curson on trumpet

  • dliberg, thank you so much for posting this clip. Booker Ervin is one of my three favorite tenor saxophonists (the others being Dexter Gordon and Illinois Jacquet). Ervin could best be described as a "modern" Texas tenor. Thanks again.

  • You sure have GREAT taste in tenor players. God bless ya'.

  • I know Booker Ervin of course but who are the others on this video. I know that Bateman is the drummer and played with altoist John Handy and assume the pianist is Kenny Drew. Any info would be appreciated.

  • the flute player who plays a mean sax himself is nathan davis(happy girl hip walk both on german saba)

the alto is pony pointdexter gumbo (prestiege)and a staple member behind lambert hendricks and ross!

    hope that helps!

    cheers

    hugh

  • Godly

  • Unfortunate word...

  • It's THIS word which is unfortunate..
