john mayer has no style just like keeny wayne shepard or johnny lang or anyone else who plays simple 1-4-5 blues without extrememfeeling doyle bramhall playing upside down strings blows almost anyone away ----check him out on roger waters stuff
wheres john mayers tone? going through the tone enhancer system to the pa like a my technology-is-better guitar player whos got tone, style, wit, class, dirt, and a feel like no other.
Btw; this has been said before and idk if its been said on this video post, but anyone who says John Mayer's tone is shit, or weak, or "can't compete with Clapton's," or anything to that effect is crazy. His signature sound is very strong and stands out now just as much as any other player out there today. He's blown up into an excellent player and deserves respect as opposed to the ridicule that a lot of "YouTubers" dish out to him. JM FTW.
@weshkyfran you're a moron, there's a reason john mayer is playing with these guys; he is without question one of the best guitar players in the world. he's just super underrated because his style of music doesn't show he peak of his true talent
@spinasweetness Oh Please learn to read ! I'm talking about sound, not about way of playing. Ok, this sound is not the easiest to play, and it's probably the reason why we can't hear anything (plus the soundman as said TintedRedFilms).
I wouldn't say it's a crappy guitarist, because I don't know him. I just can say i don"t like his sound, on this song. But I would be happy to discover "one of the best guitar player in the world" if you were nice enough to tell me what to look for !!
Clapton is still the god of tasty blues, Robert Randolph definitely an under-rated major deity (check out is own band for blistering hard-blues-funk) . Mayer's good but has had enough said about him for now. As for Ms. Crowe - just a hanger-on in my opinion who would have done really well in top 40 clubs. Her rendition of Crossroads here is a flat out imitation of Bonnie Raitt, down to the tonality, phrasing and generic "gruffness". She has no real chops of her own. I sure missed that bandwagon.
i dont understand why people think clapton is amazing. sure hes good but wheres his own style like hendrix or page , mayer is a fresh talent but although i like eric hes just not as awesome as people say. hes not god he has a good tone
finally someone who agree's with me. I'm off to uni on guitar and I feel as if Clampon doesn't play very complicated stuff (unlike Mayer who is incredible).
Eric is probably the most influential guitar player ever. When he hit the scene he was able to reinterpret the three kings (especially Freddie) and craft a phrasing that is all his own. He did that all before he was 25. Look Mayer said it the best "When you listen to clapton you go is that clapton or someone playing like clapton." Mayer may be technically better but there wouldn't be a mayer without clapton. And that's a fact.
agreed, and most people don't see past his pop songs, to his blues and covers of songs, which are more amazing than anything his stuff that people actually know.
you clearly havent lsitened to enough clapton. or im gonna presume if you have its only his most famous more commercialised stuff. he revoltuionised playing. and to say hes technically crap is, well, crap. hes getting old now and isnt as good as he used to be, but even he admits that. if you wat technicality go to satch or vai or johnson. you wnat feeling and a gitar that sings? clapton. i think mayer is incredible too, but mayer is just the next step, like clapton was in his day.
I would agree. Tehcnicality comes from players like steve vai or EJ, but when it comes to feel, it comes back around the clapton, BB, mayer, those artists. Blues artists, really. Or, rather, guitarists.
lol...they forgot to turn john's guitar up!...lol...i saw the vid interview after the concert john mayer said to eric..."Ahhhh what the hell"...lol...they were havin fun!
Because Doyle is Doyle. Listen to some Jellycream and you'll understand. JM's got good tunes. DB2 is a bajillion times better at singing and completely original. JM's a great guitar player, but he's not as unique in his playing. Plus he's a dick.
dont insult clapton n compare him to mayer the man is a legend he fuckin changed rock n roll over 40 years ago my opinion no one will ever play like eric
just because the man has a legacy doesn't mean he shouldn't be compared. don't get me wrong i mean slowhand is amazing back in the 60's eric clapton was something different but since than there's been so many people emulating him, which is where john mayer comes on strong cause he doesn't try copy clapton he does his own thing and in my opinion outshines him greatly in alot of ways
im sure clapton wouldnt be insulted by being compared to john mayer, saying that clapton still has a style that shines above many, yet can be shown through mayer is only a good thing right?
and plus clapton is one of mayer's idols why wouldnt he be happy that mayer seems to be similar after all there both amazing. johns new claptons old , both great, seperatly and together agree?
Wow thanks for the posting! I was there, my wife took me for my birthday present (April) But it was worth every minute of the wait!!! A friend asked what Eric played, I could not remember, keep the reminders coming :-)

John Mayer, who's that ? the young man? Nice pretty face, but crapy sound ! The man on the lap steel rules. And clapton is God !
Funny : the young men are playing vintage strat"s, and the old one a recent model (ringing better actually, on this clip)

I find it funny how Mayer had to bend over to reach the high of Sheryl Crow's mic! He's too damn tall!
