Judith having a shocked look was both cute but awkward. Was there any other competition for her that year? Spectacular scenes from the witness stand revelation!
Aweeeeeeeeee!! She totally deserved that emmy! I mean look at her little face! She's like a lost puppy that finally found a marvolous home!!! Go Judith Light!!!! I LOVE YOU!!!
Now abc by far is the last place I will set my tv on(Amc's only made the slightest improvement thanks to the returns of Barr and Willey) and MJ, well you know how his fame declined. So it was like the rise and fall of both great things 80's. On the other hand, James Mitchell is and was very handsome and divine. So gorgeous for his age. And I loved him in Oklahoma! RIP JM You're solely missed.
You're damn right Donna! Forgive me if you find me wrong, but I have compared ABC daytime to the late Michael Jackson. There was a time where both(Abc DT and MJ himself) could do no wrong and everything they touched turned to gold for a long time, ppl were never disappointed and the media and fans waited on bated breath for both crowd pleasers.(pt. 1)
Thank You so much for this clip,...I remember watching this live......watch how very gracious Robin Strasser is at losing the Best Actress Emmy to her friend, Judith Light....Robin won the next year, 1982, as Best Actress ....and she is still the best actress in Daytime TV 27 years after winning her Emmy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! STRASSER FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!
@JONROSE44 I love Strasser. There isn't enough praise I can give the woman. If she was ill, I would love to step in as Dorian for just that brief show or time period...but who would I be kidding, I wouldn't even do 2% as well as her. Love You Robin!
Can someone tell me when the Daytime Emmys started presenting clips of the actors & actresses work during the reading of the names of nominees? (I'd love to see the whole awards' shows of some of the early years (about the first 10 or 15 or so) of when the Daytime Emmy awards started doing that.
@Wellveryinteresting They oughta be out on DVD's. A lot of the media doesn't think we pay attention to this stuff but it would make quite a collection for those with a love for daytime and nightime(there's just as much people to hike up daytime ratings as primetime) Plus think of the fortunes it would net them to sell these packs of DVD's...and even more of a fortune because maybe it will make people with morbid curiosity turn in today...and those who tuned out long since!
Tony Geary should've won. At this point in time General Hospital was still being punished because it was produced on the west coast. The combination of Gloria Monty, Tony Geary and Genie Francis literally saved General Hospital from cancellation. The year these Daytime Emmys were presented was when Luke and Laura first went on the run to bring down Frank Smith. The award should've went to Anthony Geary - he was robbed.
I agree that Gloria helped save GH--but I argue Doug MArland had as much to do with that as anyone else. GH was already climbing in the ratings by the time Tony appeared. Pat Smith, who succeeded Marland, wrote a FEW really good stories but few could balance/write a whole show and use EVERYONE as well as Marland. He, along with Bell and Labine, are legends. btw--if you watched AW you'd realize Watson was an incredible actor. So is Geary. Doesn't take away from one to award the other, imo
@SoapsGoldenAge You're right Marland was great. And Luke wasn't Monty's first creation. The first actress she hired was the late beautiful Hollywood legend Anna Lee who played graceful Lila Quartermaine(almost til her death) and then a handful of others before Tony/Luke. Everybody made that show what it was not just HIM.
Tough call. Douglass Watson was magnificent if not brilliant in the court room scene that won him the emmy. I wish that there was a better copy of it on youtube, but you should watch it. I feel your pain though, I felt that in 1989, Watson should have won the emmy, but he had already passed away. Again in 1989, brilliant acting when Mac finds out that his daughter Iris has betrayed him.
OMG I finally get to see this in full for the first time!! Douglass Watson, deservingly honored, during the pinnacle of his career....thanx Donna for posting this, and preserving this, for AW fans everywhere!
A toast to you, Douglass--you are truly loved and missed...
Thank you so much for posting. Judith Light is really the BEST. There's a reason behind why she is a part of the SOAP HALL OF FAME. If her acting wasn't natural and excellent that honor wouldn't be given to her. So many actors have been in the business for years but they could only dream of what she has achieved.
The scene in which Mac Cory (Douglass Watson) falls apart on the witness stand after realizing that Matthew is really Mitch Blake's son is probably the best acting I have ever witnessed on a soap opera. Judith Light was always a bit too "affected" but Watson's protrayal was so REAL!
Totally agree! Watson's performance on the witness stand was stellar! Just saw it again for the first time in over 20 years on AOL video. It was as emotional today as it was all those years ago. Victoria Wyndham and Watson (Rachel and Mac) were two of the finest actors to ever hit daytime TV. Haven't seen a couple with more raw emotional scenes yet.
I was glad that James Mitchell won for what was then an NBC soap over the ABC soaps (& I'm not sure Geary deserved it that year), but I'd rather have seen ATWT's Larry Brygman won that year (Brygman would win a little later), because that was the year Brygman's Dr. John Dixon was falsely accused and had to stand trial for rape & then had to deal w/ being blind.
Judith was shocked cause this is her second Emmy win. This win wasn't for the court room scene, that scene got her the 1980 win. :)

Ah, the two great "witness stand" performances -- if only soaps could attract actors the caliber of Douglass Watson these days...

Wow. Ryan's Hope was once the number 4 soap? What year was that?

Days of our Lives won numerous awards before this, so a "West Coast bias" doesn't make sense

~~~I'm so glad we're able to enjoy Douglass Watson again
in the episodes of "Another World" on AOLvideo. Now that Nancy Frangione
has taken over the role of *Cecile*,
*Mac* has his work cut out for him as she devours his two "sons".
Douglass...we miss you...
Wow, Now that was cool that the best actress emmy nominations were for all ABC soaps.
You won't see that happen now.
It had to be hard to be nominated against friends/co-workers. Judith was shocked.lol
James and Ruth looked so wonderful:)
The sound isn't perfect but this is a great clip nonetheless. I love seeing James Mitchell, Ruth Warwick and all the others so young.
