I think mesh works in triangles or attempts to convert polygons to triangles.

Be careful you dont use it too much or your geometry will look too technical, unless of course it is what you are going for. When working with bio forms try to stay away from snap and instead use estimates. The imperfections you have is what makes the big differences later.
