  • one would think that with all their technology that they could devise some sort of backpack/heater to keep them warm. after all, they have made an a/c unit to keep nascar drivers cool in long races.

  • very interesting

  • I love watching videos like this, from the comfort and warmth of my home in the U.S.

  • burrrrr.....

  • So...how many time until they put the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty in the garbage?

  • @apresesco

Oh shut up, they're being very cautious about the enviroment (we're talking liberal tree hugging scientists after all) and besides, it's a fucking barren wasteland. There are no species or wildlife to endanger.

  • Comment removed

  • @KiloByte69 Actually I'm worried if they are stealing oil and minerals in Antarctica while my country is not doing the SAME for profit :) Btw there are endangered species in Antarctica. Southern giant petrel, chatham albatross etc..

  • @apresesco

Neither of those birds nest or spend much time anywhere near the south pole since there's no food source or survivable habitat for them there. They're hundreds of miles away by the coast. And I think your country has a ton of it's own problems to work out before it starts thinking about expeditions to Antarctica. But hey, if you guys were getting oil maybe you wouldn't need to depend on us for aid dollars then eh?

  • @KiloByte69 What "aid" you brain washed? With regard to the will of the people, all the U.S. military bases parasitizing the soil of my country... would be annihilated in one second.

  • @apresesco

Something like $750 million a year, look it up idiot. And please, you people are having a hard enough time fighting a bunch of guerrillas running around in your own jungles with AK-47s. Your government was begging us for support.

  • @KiloByte69 Actually the government pays for that military shit that you sell, and is more to enrich private defense companies than whatever else. I think the U.S. is asking for a "humanitarian aid" 100% in the same way that you give to us, Libya, Iraq and so on. It's about love and cooperation. I want to help you too... >:))

  • being a megabuilder and being involved with megaconstruction projects is simply a polite way of being lazy........

  • why not just erect a gigantic tent or inflatable dome, and then heat the inside of it?

then you can build whatever you want inside that

    then take the tent down

  • hahaha... its a joke... ---- Massive Project --- and only 2 people are working in this video..... hahaha... if it was a third world country project..... they would have send atleast few thousand of their people to work there.. and those people would have loved to find a work.......

  • Learn to live like Eskimos ..... World Ice Age is Coming.....

World Elite Class people will be first to disappear cuz they Can Not take any hardship...

and are just too cozy and comfort loving and high life demanding people...

  • Respect for these guys that has to be hard work.

  • @TheMissingTooth You faggot Canadian, if you were in front of me I'd bitch slap you. America owns nothing, but England owns your ass, fuck clown.

  • @miket1m get the f*** off youtube; comments were meant for the video, not how great and unappreacited USA really is. A great place to start is that this vid is nothing about america, its the antaric: a LONG way south from USA. The level intelligence illustrated in your comments does america no justice. I dont care how the argument started and whether if it WAS related to vid, point is its not anymore. Congrats on showing how americans just seem to ruin everything, even a nat-geo documentry.

  • @rashmir34 AAhhh, No!

  • got Jesus ?

  • Aim of constructing this observatory is to watch some behaviours of a particle called neutrino. It's extremely light & interacts very weekly with matters. At every minute billions of them get passed through our body, but we can't feel because of their week interaction. But this particle has an advantage that it can pass through the large objects like stars, planets (like earth) when some of its properties get changed. Studying that you can get information about the core of those large objects.

  • Wonder how much this is costing the people of the United States. We have the wrong people in charge of shit.

  • @miket1m

If everyone rejected science like you we would be bashing lizards with rocks right now.

  • @asicveg Really, you think I reject science? I don't moron, but I do reject the ideas of how my tax money is spent. I'll give you one guess whose funding this, and its not Denmark or any other shitty european country. I am one of milliions of American who are tired of our tax money being wasted on crap like this and funding shithole countries in europe who hate us.

  • @miket1m

So advancing human knowledge and sciene is WASTING !!? The war in Iraq costs the U.S billions every got damn week! WAY more than THIS! YOU DONT GIVE A SHIT ABOUT THAT DO YOU!

  • @askjiir Actually no!

  • @asicveg I don't reject science, I reject our government spending money they don't have and then taxing the hell out of us. Its a political thing.

  • whatta fuck are these shitheads doing there? get the fuck out of there stupid morons, don't pollute at least that part of the world. Scientists? yeah right...

  • So everyone has an opinion? Do you really have any technical knowledge to question the reason of such a construction? If not, keep your ideas to yourself because you are only wasting your time. Internet is full of peepz like you...

  • @ilkoltulu And do you have any technical knowledge to state why we should be there? You live in a country that is still in the 10th century asshoie. Let me ask you a question, do you have any idea whose paying for all of this? The average hard working American citizen, thats who. Why do all you creeps from around the world have so much to say about things you have no idea about? I know that sand hole Turkey isn't paying for any of this. Go herd your goats big mouth.

  • @miket1m come to my country and i ll show you that how ignorant you are and btw we are a candidate to be a member of EU. Btw yes i have at least some technical knowledge since i worked in conctruction projects. I hope with your funny racist and typical ignorant redneck attitude someday you ll burn in hell maggot...

  • @ilkoltulu You have some technical knowledge? I don't think building mud huts counts. Go to college and get a degree, then talk to me. Go to college and make something of yourself instead of posting on here about shit you know nothing about dumbass goat herder..

The EU is an evil empire and the biggest threat since Adolf Hitler. You don't even know what a redneck is, do you?

  • @miket1m yeah mike i am building mud huts with an mba degree and i ve been in southern states enough to learn how a redneck brain works; it seems like i am not the only one quarreling with you, there are many others. Get a life dumb asshole...

  • @ilkoltulu Really, an MBA degree in what? So you assume that I live in the south. Thats funny. I live in New York City. You don't pay taxes, I do, neither do those asshole that are arguing with me. I have a life my friend and it doesn't include living in the 10th century.

  • @miket1m a degree in MIS asshole after a BS in engineering; so you are living in newyork ghettos and typing from your small smelly room eww? Maybe you are the one who is living in 10th century, not actually 10th century, i think you are prehistoric with this vulgar neanderthal attitude towards others and definitely need to see a psychiatrist poor one...

  • @ilkoltulu Haha, you wish you could afford where I live.

  • @miket1m you are a real moron, no actually and idiot lol

  • @ilkoltulu Yeah a degree in sheep herding, hahaha. Dumbass 3rd world imbecile. Did you get your degree online?

  • @miket1m online? no, btw you probably don't even have a university degree do you? middle class taxpayer pretending dip shit...

  • I used to wonder why in the hell would some one want to be in all that cold? Then i found out Hitler led an expedition to this place. Who finances these operations. What is to be found? The right questions gives new intelligence and insight to that which may be hidden. Nothing grows in Ice, Nothing. So a Treasure of Paramount importance seems the Priority. Observing frozen Imaginary Plankton and it's species? I don't think so. Truth is always stranger than fiction. Byrd Put us on Point.

  • its not what is there............its what they can see...Google searh,"south pole telescope"....u will b enlighented.Great question tho,...glad 2 c im not alone in putting these pices of the puzzle together.

  • Thanks for the info bro, I'am tryin to enlighten ppl about this Martial Law swine flu, Fema Camp mandatory thing. But many are so damned intune to that idiot box known as Tv..

  • Also, scientists can perform tests down there that would be far easier (believe it or not) than in a lab. If they want to know something about extreme freezing, that's the place to do it. It would probably be cheaper than replicating it in a sterile facility.

I dunno if this is what you're asking for, but that's one of the main reasons I think they invest far South and North so much.

(I know I don't sound like a philosopher like you did in your first comment lol)

  • @torkoal531 That is the most stupidest reason I think I have ever heard. Who gives a rats ass about these nutrino's. They don't have to go there to learn about extreme freezing. This is all just a way to spend the Americans tax money.

  • @miket1m you are an ill-informed dumbass.

  • @torkoal531 Yes you're right the majority of us are, but we are waking up and look out world, a new America is about to be born. Watch our politics in November. We are getting all of the liberal left wing scum out of congress and this shoe shine, no nothing President we have will be gone in 2012, an end of an error. Then I think we should attack Canada. We owe you big time. Niel Young, what was that all about, what did we do to you? lol

  • @miket1m Oh come on, I'd rather the Science (Science Rules!) be funded than the destruction that my own country America funds, yes, you just heard me. A new America is about to be born?, bah!, America didn't even exist as of 1992, and as my own country, I really don't like it for what it's done to the rest of the world. You should be lucky to have it funded on Science. And the more we learn, the more intelligent we get as a civilization. You must be less educated than that of a bacterium.

  • @TheFinalPhaze Check out the video called "Make Mine Freedom" Sometimes we don't have a choice but to fight. You need to study your history kid. America has done great things for the world. We are the most generous and least appreciated country in the history of man. Whats really ashame is that I have to defend America against an American. Stop listening to this anti American propaganda.

  • @torkoal531 So was your mother before she had you creep.

  • @miket1m Can you spell "troll"? Seriously, it took you 6 monthes to think of that?

  • we are payng for thath its our gov whatt for?take a ques

  • Why doesn't NASA design, build and erect at the South Pole, the same living modules they would use on the Moon or Mars? This way they can get much feedback data as to what's practical and reliable.

  • Funny you say that, they'd probably descover allot more for allot less in the ice than the costs of sending shuttles into space

  • NASA does many experiments and helps fund many other experiments at the South Pole, including enviromental studies for living on those planets.

  • because feedback of that sort is not needed the reason why noone is living on the moon or mars yet is because of finance, it just costs trillions of dollars to pull something like that off, If the space race would of continued there would be humans on mars decades ago.

  • Not now, but there is no guarantee the U.S. or another country won't take on such a venture in the far future for economic purposes (mining). In any case, I doubt it would cost "trillions" to do this at the South pole.

  • has anyone the size of it in meters?

  • Carlton Walker looks like a BAMF.

  • I bet in 50 years this video will be rendered in 3d holographic like those pictures from the 20s that are photoshopped in color.

  • WTF STONER!!!

  • i would bet those welders are making a good wage down there.

  • Not as much as you think. I'll be working down there for $377 a week. Some can make more, but not much more.

  • Really? My friend makes more than that working a regular welding job. Although I guess it would be a cool experience to have.

  • @rollininoldstyle if u can get it...

  • Why are those people out in the open? Antarctica is an ideal location to try outer space colonization schemes (it's big, alien, empty, and with extreme temperature conditions, all of which Mars also is). So why not tinker with spacesuits and means of outer space construction? Probably cheaper to try it out in Antarctica first than it would be on the Moon or Mars.

  • @Rickyrab leave antarctica alone and leave the rest of the planets alone too.

  • @bossystop yeah leave them alone. man doesn't belong anywhere! not even earth! we should all be dead! that way there can be nothing, no story to tell, and no stinkin humans. :D

  • to cause as much damage as possible - in an effort to prevent people from using Antartica as an outposte in case that might happen.

  • @Rickyrab they test out Mars spacesuits all the time in Antarctica

  • hopefully that shithole doesnt collaps like your bridges do!

  • "It's ent-artica"

  • lol..ok..I just have to answer jeabo0adhd...yes they got them there by truck..on the bridge that comes over from Australia....heehee

  • Its so weird to see bulldozers and cranes in the arctic. How did they get them out there? By truck?

  • this is definately for science only because oil would be way too expensive from anarctica they would have to drill through the ice and fly it out

  • you are seriously one of the biggest d bags alive...

  • I like yellow.

  • Yellow is good. I like green, too.

  • Yellow is my happy colour.

  • There was a showing of this video last weekend at South Pole Station to a raucous audience. Everybody was laughing at the over dramatic narration. The carpenters and cargo handlers were running around all last week saying "We're MEGA Builders!" Of course, the video never mention that the building was poorly designed and that the foundations are settling at different rates, so the whole station is starting to twist at the joints of the four wings.

  • they shouldn't build a wal mart...all the other retail stores will go out of business in a year

  • Damn, and i thought my work was a rough contracting job. They should build a Wal-mart down there next, I'll come drywall it.

  • wow, I'm disappointed.. National Geographic, I love you with all my heart, but I did not learn a f*ckin thing from that video.. all I learned is that by the time they fly in all that 25 million pounds, the south pole will be melted.

  • That's because Al Gore is running around down there with a few flame throwers attached to the back of his Hummer.

  • Wait a second.

People say that until 2009, it will be hard to see Planet X (Niburu) from any location other than the South Pole.

    Is there a connection?

Is this the reason for this facility?

  • Wait a second. Why are they building this thing, why is it so important.

  • ive worked in the arctic(-50c, -100 w/ wind) and its not hard if your prepared, which these idiots are not. also to say this is for "science" is a joke when clearly its for oil.

  • I would tend to agree it's for oil. First Iraq, now South Pole. Maybe Iran would be easier...lol

  • You are forgetting that South Pole is at 9600ft. They'd have to drill through two miles of ice first to get to any sort of land mass, and then drill further down to find oil. If these guys can't even get the equipment to run properly, do you really think we'd be drilling for oil there?

Having been there, I appreciate the new station. You can't imagine how good it feels to be able to sleep in a bed and get a hot shower after a few weeks sleeping in a tent out on the ice doing field work.

  • trust me oil is the last thing they have going on there. the united states abides by the antarctic treaty. the only drilling going on there is for a project called "ice cube". which is a nutrino detector. it would be way to much to drill there and get the oil back to the real world. you would have to fly it out.

  • yeah, yeah, you are right...one of my college professor's graduate student was one of the people who was involved in the project.

  • Fahreneheit is still old fashioned, why to use somehting thee rest of the world do not understand? USA used be the land of the dreams...Now it's EU! And 0C is not cold at all, I have here -1C and it's very pleasant!

  • Stop using Fahrenheits. 99% of the world populatiion uses Celsius and have no slightest clue "what is something below 0 F". The F is not a base on any scientific at all.

Also USA should start to use the metric system, what is a station of 160000 sqfeet??

  • I can use Fahrenheit if I want. In the US we are taught both Fahrenheit and Celcius and use Celcius in sciences and Fahrenhiet in normal daily activity which is why we arent as fluent with it. Try not to be so ignorant.

  • fahrenheit is a stupid measurement and its proven...same way miles are used by stupids only thats y americans r still using...

  • 32 degrees F is the freezing point 0 = freaking cold in general weather it be fahrenheit or celcius

  • Come on National Geographic don't you think that you should of mentioned the most important part of this project? I have a different outlook on what you are feeding me now. It may be the truth but not the whole truth. Starting up a tractor is the less of what this place is about. Why even bother?

  • i would never live there, not because of the cold but thats the kind of place resident evil happens lol

guys get trapped there from the southpole winter, place is completely isolated... next summer rolls around and the place is empty

  • Why do the Americans think they have the RIGHT to build here. I thought the whole beauty of the poles was the fact that they weren't polluted by construction and American imperialism. There goes the neighbourhood !!

  • Ignorant hypacrite. How can you complain of "American Imperialism" when you're from the UK.

  • BTW they're doing it for science where they could help advance medicines or technology. Its a good place to test in the cold environment and the like. That could benefit the world into a positive route.

  • So you believe that science has to pollute the last remaining uninhabited habitat in order to save us from rampant disease based on overconsumption and greed? And I suppose you believe that Sadam had weapons of mass destruction too? You talk about the UK's imperialist past, sure its deplorable, but hey we have been paying for it ever since. America is still at it. happily now colonising what other more responsible nations have had the foresight to leave alone, in the name of "science".

  • i have worked there, and everything that is taken there comes out of there. very little pollution there.

  • Before you call me an ignorant hypocrite I suggest you check your spelling. Dickwad.

  • is dickwad a real word jonny?

  • thats some cool ass shit

  • Watching for the upcoming planet Niburu!! Gonna be a hell of a telescope/research center!!

  • I only believe in my brothers and sisters on the battle field, I trust them, nobody else. faith is for the weak humans that cant funtion without it.The paradox of religion has shown itself ~V~, I am a pilot,I speed Glide and hang glide and can fly most aircraft, Raytheon King Air, I have never seen anything while in the air:)

  • there must be plenty of oil there burn the PLACE ,nobody lives there and afterwards it might be a cool place to go on holiday!

  • I have been all through the Mayan ruins. The last time it came by it also pulled the Comet Venus into Mars leaving a giant cut a million times bigger than the grand canyon, Venus is a comet, trapped in our solar system. This is what the Maya carved into their stone. The disapered off the face of this planet or stopped carving into the stone:)They kept track better than any of us, we still use their callender 365.

  • sistralebb, your in a dream world, wake up, religion is for the weakest of all humans, the paradox of controling the weak is here, stay off the drugs, quit breathing the dusters man, get a life one day handwiper, ever hear of a thing called toilet paper???

  • As far as the scientist, they just found another underwater ruins, dating 13,500, scientist are scratching their heads again, back to the drawing board they go those stupid pukes. They are still trying to bridge the gap between Relativity and Quantum mechanics, they dont believe in Scalar Magnetics becuse they cant see it, so its not there.all the mainstream scientist have done is create Nukes, nothing more. They cant even cure the common cold.

  • Fact is your brain is on spam, lay off the nodes hall monitor

  • heh. I have a friend who has done three tours down there. and she hated the cold of a subtropical winter!

  • This makes more sense to me than a trip to Mars. I would like to learn more about this project. Anyone have a link?

  • Antarctica is actaully a land mass, so building on it isn't as hard as building on top of ice. It's still VERY cold all year round. Like they said it's summer in that video. And although they said it's 10,000ft above sea level, that doesn't mean a whole lot considering where it is on the Earth.

  • i wonder whats underneath all the ice in the south pole. gotta be something to be discovered there

  • the entrence to a holo earth

  • they found 2 20ft discs under a mile and a half of Ice, they were missing from the big MS at Area-51, the russians were trying to get them before we did, rember the russian sub going down 8 years ago, dead men tell no tales. The @ foofighters were place back inside the MS, and moved out of the U.S. to Area-53 woomeera desert, overseen by Pine Gap Area-52 Cray Super Computer Land:):)all in australia, 128 disc's, a few very big.

  • Area what where? What a joke!

  • this is very nice

  • Awesome !!!!!

  • Is this the south pole telescope to see planet x?

  • that's what i hear

  • what is it with people and planet x?

  • Planet X was on the mayan solar star map, we still use the mayans callender 365, they were much smarter than you will ever be in a thousand lifetimes:), what is it with stupid people who think they truly have a high IQ because they can spell, howstupid can you get:) just look around:)

  • On the show, "Ice Road Truckers" the rigs were never shut down for entire season except for oil changes and repairs. They have big good size power trains in them.

Fuel, even flow in to Anartica is cheaper than down time.

  • Cold not only affects engine blocks and it's fluids but also batteries. Cranking power of a super cold battery is about nill. Let em run all night or use block heaters and battery warmers. Down time is more expensive than fuel. Besides, we the taxpayers are paying for it all so it sounds.

  • I was stationed in Antarctica in 1971. We left the heavy earthmoving equipment running 24 hours a day or plugged the motors in to engine block heaters. When a storm, 2 or 3 day storms, hit it was a bitch to fight our ways to the equipment to fuel. Equipment froze or became very brittle. Men froze and became very brittle. I'll never forget it.

  • How were the girls?

  • Frigid.

Don't look at me like that, you were thinking the same thing!

  • Damn. I guess I can scratch that one off my to-do list.

  • why to cold

  • pena que não tem versões legendadas em outras línguas, ou mesmo dubladas... em português ou espanhol seria ótimo!

a sorrow for the lack of subtitles in others languages...in Portuguese, for example...

    abraço

    cáceres, pantanal - brasil

  • ...what!?

  • They must have generators running 24/7 for a power supply. So why isnt the mobile equipment using engine block heaters for when its not running? or better than that leave it idling all night long and fill it up in the morning

  • ...what?

  • have you any idea of the fuel requirements that would entail? you obviously didn't take into consideration the fact that it is really hard to transport in such a harsh environment, let alone store it in big enough quantities for your idea. Ever heard of batteries?

  • All of your comments and conspiracy thoeries are just sad...

  • *rolls eyes* You need help...

  • rofl you suck ass

  • No, encourage him. He's my new source of ridiculous entertainment.

  • Time for a new tinfoil hat; your current one isn't keeping the rays out anymore..

  • possibly... admiral byrd supposedly found the north pole entrance...around the 30's i think.

then, of course, the theory that the many nazis escaped to an underground antarctic base and found the southern entrance to the hollow earth...

  • u need to lay off the drugs man...its messin with your head

  • Yes, that's why there's always a whirlpool the size of India at the North Pole. The water comes back up at, uhm, the deep sea volcanic vents, yeah, that's it. To the people living inside, the North Pole is the "Great Geyser of the Ocean", and the volcanic vents are the weird little whirlpools the ocean drains from.

Come to think of it, there's probably a good fantasy novel in there somewhere.

  • I need to be ensured that I will be able to get high speed internet before I buy a lot there.

  • I'm confused, who are you talking to and how does it pertain to the video?

  • yeah i saw it hehe im sure they need a fan in -20 degree weather.

  • It never tells us what those opportunities are. I wish this video was longer.

  • lol look at 2:40 theres a fan in the crane lol!!!!

  • Good pickup

Why would a crane in Antarctica need a fan?

  • lmaooooo that was silly dude ahhahahaha

  • why is the south pole so much more brutal than the north pole????

  • The North pole is on a bed of water and the South is on a continent with a pile of ice 3000 meters high. About 98% of the Earth's ice are in the polar regions, but 91% of it is found in Antarctica, making it the coldest place on earth.

  • Uhm, Are you saying that the North Pole is only 7% the size of the south? Surely some mistake, especially given the land mass underneath it.

  • Because it sits on land mass. The North Pole sits on pure ice and the surrounding water conducts heat.

  • Also, you need to take into account the mass of the ice sitting on Antarctica, as it is much thicker than the ice at the North Pole.

  • Did anyone notices a fan in one of the cockpit of the cranes (2:40)...

  • Yeah I actually did. Must get pretty hot up there......

  • eheh I also laugh about that.

I want to believe there was there before they ship the crane to the ice :)

  • is it just me or does the NSF HATE there scientists
