To my understanding, the factors came together just right to create this phenomenon. My question is how often does this plant create snowfall of any intensity? Does this happen every year? Does this happen only if the winds are from the southeast? I think this video is so cool.
I use to live on the same road as the power plant I rember a couple heavy snow falls I also rember people calling the news stations because they saw the steam it put out and thought it was a tornado
Wow! Very cool! Thanks for posting. And for those of you asking, PowerPlant snow is just that. Snow caused by the heat from a power plant. Very similar to lake effect snow but on a much, much smaller scale. Very rare. Factories can also cause this. Cool vid and 5*
Dammit, I should've known that would go over someone's head, lol.
It was a Forrest Gump reference XD
When I said that, I meant "Rain isn't the only thing that can come in sideways," in reference to when in the movie, Forrest was talking about how when he was in Vietnam, there was little rain, "big ol' fat rain," rain coming in sideways, and rain coming from underneath.
this happened at a small coal fired power plant east of here a couple weeks ago..wind was comin out of the north west and blowin the moisture from the cooling towers across the hiway...hence, a 200 yard strip of snow across the highway :)
Some of you seem to be missing the point that the heavy snow is caused by the moisture coming from the power plant cooling tower, not just that it's snowing heavy.
HI Dude ya Im Canadian to , Im in New Brunswick , in the northen Part of Atlantic Canada .Anyway Yeah we know whats -36 Celcuis and Snowstorms with a total Snowfall of 10 ' + .
Unlike this joker ... that was funny ,its like never seen snow before eh c ya ....
I heard of Lake Effect Snow but not Power Plant Effect Snow could the Cooling Towers cause Power Plant Effect Thunderstorms in the Spring and Summer Months too
I have seen it snow so hard you would have not been able to see pass the hood of your car. Google it 1978 blizzard in Ohio. My barometer went to 28.38 yes I said 28. when it started back up temperatures went below 0 and the wind was sustain at 60 to 70 and guest to 110MPH. That is still the lowest preasure record in the USA other then a hurricane.
crazy! In my town in Ontario we are supposed to get a natural gas plant put in, we are right by Lake Ontario as well, would that have the same effect as shown here?
@egyptianlily unlikely... MOST storms go west to east in Ontario. The people in NY MAY get some... but usually lake effect snow happens along the shores of lake Huron etc In Ontario, usually unrelated to anything man made.
This is a weather even caused by human activity, in this case one power plant. After seeing this, will global warming deniers still say that all the factories, power plants, and internal combustion engines running 24 hours a day all over the globe have NO effect on climate?
Excuse me for being an apparent stupid fourteen year old girl who believes in Christ our God. And you dont apparently cause you believe in the bullshit of 'global warming' thus its fucking cold everywhere now so you and al gore is completely wrong.

Huh, it looks like snow can come in sideways too...
Skaarjguy 2 years ago
@Skaarjguy ...Snow can come in sideways because of one main reason: strong winds. That's how snow falls sideways during blizzards.

I never thought about power plant effect snow....wow!
If it's from a coal burning plant....isn't it dirty? A nuclear plant would just be steam...and produce pretty clean snow....right?
