People tend to criticize or despise China because they compare it to all the developed countries, which is just absurd I think. When the Chinese say they are proud of themselves they mostly mean to compare to their OWN lives 30 or 40 years ago, everyone in his right mind knows that China still lags behind in technologies, standard of living, social progress and political freedom compared to the "West".
