tommy oozes insane amounts of talent - you can't practise that, its innate. yes, you could get to a very very competent level by practising 7 hrs a day, but you would never be a tommy emmanuel. he is a consummate musician, a virtuoso, which all the practice in the world cannot reproduce.
He is an inspiration to me, i have been practicing on my guitar almost every night - it takes a lot of time dedication and persistence, its a cop out to say you can't be as good so i better not try (not that you're saying this) - i think tommy wants everyone to play the guitar or at least try to.. he started when he was 8, if you are persistent enough then you will eventually become good at it.
that didnt come out right. i mean if you are fairly talented and carry music as a big part of your life, then you can come 'close enuf to sound great in the style of tommy'.
but still, to really get in the same ballpark, well ok thats only possible for a few on this planet.
Most guitarists, including the greats, are limited by the nature of the instrument. This man knows no such limits. I'd never heard of him until yesterday when I saw him as related to a Leo Kottke video. Now I can't stop watching him, it's insanely great.
@TIO540S1 There are musicians like me who are the result of tons of hard work, sweat and practice. Then there are the elite like him who are just born to do it. What I love most is how he clearly LOVES what he is doing. Can you imagine those who have this talent but can't stand music or performing? I am so humbled by this guy. :)
Yeh Yeh, this is the Tommy I became to know!!! Giving the audience and fan's all he's got! Giving them the feeling they are in Heaven! You just have to love this man!!! Thanks for posting. Next monday I', goiing to visit his concert in Middelburg! Can't nearly wait!
just remember man if you love your guitar and actully practice everyday you will be this good someday people wouldent learn instruments if they were hard people by nature like short cuts and we dont like to do hard things for ages but guitar just get easier and easier think i bet tommy plays like at least 7-10 hours a day be it from gigging or jus playing i no sumday i wil be as good as him because im not gunna give up niether should you buddy =P
You also have to have musical gift of some sort. Some ppl can play all they like and will never be at this level or close to it.
But yes, he said he plays it for up to 10 hours in a day on occasions. This is his profession and his job, so when you think about it.. other people work 8-10 hours a day.
But also take into mind that Tommy is actually different to all of us. He is an amazing guitar player but also when he hears a song he can automatically play it and this came to him naturally.(Perfect Pitch) But the rest of what you said was right.
This is "I Go To Rio", "Mighty Mouse" and "Ol' Brother Hubbard". Brilliant video! Thanks for posting! Did he tell you the name of the second song? That's definately the title anyway.
They invented the guitar because someone told them tommy was coming to earth

u aren't so right as u think. no one is in his level for the main reason that no one can practice as long as he can and does.
even though he is more talented than most, practice makes perfect.

Can someone tell me what the name of that second song is?

I've listened to him every day for about a year now, and unlike other artists/bands, it's still as amazing and entertaining as it was the first time!

His brother Phil is just as good. There are some videos of him knocking about on YouTube.
I went to see Tommy when he came to Manchester last November. He was sublime.

Right. When you see a guy like Tommy perform, you're only seeing the tip of the Iceberg. There is way, way, way, way, more stuff going on than we see

My stepmother was from England, and she used to say "role on bloody school" every time we had a summer vacation!
Anyway, there are no words to describe Tommy's playing other than maybe Doyle on steroids!
