  • Wallace Hartley the band leader is an unsong hero of the tragedy.

  • A Night to Remember - a fantastic book by Walter Lord, I recommend you find a copy and read it if you're interested in historical, haunting accounts of those who were on the Titanic at the end - a very moving book. Also, a great film and probably never bettered as it focusses on the facts as they are known on that night.

  • SHEPARD!

  • this is the orginal titanic from 1912

  • @pontus7107 umm no this is a movie

  • @pontus7107 You fucking idiot, the Titanic SANK in 1912. And no, there were no cameras on deck at the time, especially not this quality. This is from the 1958 movie, but good job giving false information to people based on zero knowledge whatsoever.

  • @VoidmasterNX ok now understand im but say not fucking idiot to me more ty

  • @pontus7107 Don't be a fucking idiot, and I won't have to.

  • Good bye everyone....

  • @SNESosT ???

  • lol SOPA. GG internet. It was fun while it lasted.

  • goodbye reddit, goodbye

  • @gagapopooo Godspeed, alien, godspeed.

  • SOPA. So long internet, We tried to speak freely.

  • nearer my god to thee is an essential part of any good titanic movie, going all the way back to 1929's "Atlantic"

  • omfg makes me sad. they probably couldve made it.

  • I don't know. There are three variations of Nearer My God To Thee. Any 3 versions could have been played, and a passenger might only know one variation of Nearer My God To Thee, and could have mistaken their playing for another song besides Nearer My God To Thee. It is possible, but it is also not possible that it was Nearer My God To Thee.

  • I was just talking about this scene in work earlier, and tears came to my eyes...thanks for this!

  • I knew a woman who was on the Titanic and she said that she never heard this song played.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • @GeorgeVreelandHill Well, everything is in mass panic.

  • dont be hypocritical... james cameron titanic is smthing incredible... please stop comparing the two titanics!!

  • @savixa

James Cameron: Love story, and has literally very little to do with the history and the real sinking of the Titanic.

A Night To Remember (featured above): Is real, and is based off the real facts of the sinking. It is basically like a Titanic documentary.

  • @America100000able

is what i said... stop comparing because they're so different in the period and in the contents however, personally cameron's titanic is one of my best movies

  • @savixa

I never said Cameron's version was bad. I just said that must of the things on Cameron's version never really happened in real life.

  • i'm just marvelling at the sets for this, amazing the stuff we could do with talent, imagination and inventiveness rather than computers.

  • this film is way better than anything james cameron could ever spit out.

  • @MrPixarGuy you're just saying that because it's old, right?

  • They died like men.

  • @RingBearer1992

    seriously<3

  • can someone give me a link to this song

  • R.i.P

  • titanic from 1958 thats final

  • r.i.p band.

  • @RingBearer1992 Actually, none of the band members ever got the chance to get into a lifeboat. They knew they faced certain death.

  • This is actually the real version that was played, not the modern one.

A woman described a melody tht was near to this, and many said it was nearer my god to thee

  • the version heard here is the version that would have been played by a British ensemble in 1912, i.e. the one Titanic's remaining passengers would have heard

  • @davidpar2 Actually, his family stated it would have been the Propior Deo version (similar to the Bethany with a different refrain). This was the version that Hartley's Methodist choirmaster father had been using for over 30 years, and they were certain it was the version he would have used to such an extent that the notes of this version are on his memorial.

  • i didnt know there wuz another titanic movie!! D:

  • This film is infinitely better than James Cameron's pile of crap

  • @bairns1234 Actually, many of the scenes in the Cameron version are shameless steals from this picture; the scene with Andrews and the honeymoon couple vs Andrews with Jack and Rose, to name one obvious larceny. I mean, even Wally Hartley starting to play as his bandmates walk away-- child, please! Of course, when a big-time Hollywood director does it, it's called "hommage."

  • I think there's 2 versions of Nearer My God To Thee. The 1st version in Titanic (1953), And the 2nd version in A Night To Remember (1958). I like the 1st version better.

  • I was thinking of this song as I went home from work two hours ago. As a child I grew up listening to church hymns. I just can't imagine they played/sang this calmly but heartbreakingly as the Titanic sank. Yes, they were nearer to God at that moment... :c

  • this is the last song my beloved grandpa heared before we buried him.

this is the song and dried my tears

  • Those musicians Knew that the end was near they remained calm and they played until the very end.

RIP to all those 1500 who died they deserve our respects thumbs up if u agree

  • It's weird but I am a hard and strong person, I don't usually cry because I'm too proud. But every damn time I see this scene I bawl my eyes out. The idea of complete strangers dying right in between America and Ireland, the places where my great grandparents were is too much to bear. I cry because my family survived everything but they didn't.

  • Does anyone find it weird that this video has 666 thousand views? The devil has some say in this.

  • For all you people who say they never played near my god to thee on the deck as it was going down think agen! I knew a lady who was on the titanic when she was 2. Years after the titanic sank her older sister ran outta church tarrafyed beacuse they played near my god to thee, latter on she tolf her mother thats the song she hurd as the ship was going down and her mother verrified that yes it was played on the ship as it was sinking.

  • @itscodyw learn to fucking spell

  • @facepalmsociety15 grow up most of it was a typo.

  • @itscodyw yeah i'm grown up with a college education and i apply it

  • @facepalmsociety15 in what? I'm a piano tec. as well as a piano major and went to crane school of music potstam NY.

  • @itscodyw Also Mary Wilburn an English Lady who survived was 28 at the time when she was on the titanic and died i think in around 1987 aged 103 or something like that said the ship's orchestra continued to play "Nearer My God to Thee." "I can hear it like it was being played now,"

  • @SugarRayP4P yes it really happend.

  • @itscodyw They probably played several songs at different times.

  • @itscodyw A little correction: the only Titanic survivor I recall telling this "I ran outta church" scenario was Eva Hart, who was _7_ years old at the time, not 2.

One could make the argument, btw, that the Methodist version "Propior Deo" was played (instead or also), since it was Hartley's "personal default" tune of the hymn as well as similar enough to "Bethany" to be mistaken for it by the non-British survivors, many of which also told they heard NMGTT.

  • @Hirvassalo yes the woman ik was 4 her sister was 7 when her sister who was 7 ran out of church. She was 2 while she was on the titanic her sister was 5 while she was on titanic

  • @itscodyw Eva Hart was 7 years old at the time of the _sinking_ (she was born in January 1905) and besides, she had no siblings at all. And the church event took place only some months after the sinking.

Are we talking about the same person at all or was there a second person to tell a story of hearing "Horbury" on the night of the sinking and running later out of church when it was played?

  • @Hirvassalo it hast to be a diffrent one because her maden name isn't heart. She died some years ago but her sister ran out of church because they where playing nearer my god to thee.

  • @itscodyw read this for the people that dont believe it

    Wallace_Hartley on wikipedia

  • @itscodyw thumbs up if dis mke u cry evrytiem....5eva

  • @itscodyw What???

  • @BrandonxxYn1

    true. I know. ^^

  • the song just brings you into tears

  • this remind me of a titanic scene

  • @stepinoutwithstyle .....This is the Titanic movie.

    The one from '58.

  • Possibilities: Nearer my... (horbury, bethany or proprio Deo). But, according to Harold Bride, Autumn (tune) or Songe d'Automne (valse), a hit of that age.

All of these hymns and songs are available on youtube.com

  • did they really play nearer my God to thee in the titanic while it was sinking or the director just put it there??

  • @betarayvil They played something. No one is quite sure if it was Nearer my God to Thee but a lot of people think it was. It's basically come down to, did they play Nearer my God to Thee or did they play Autumn while the ship was going down?

  • @CyberNecrovalley

They might have played both and testimonies depend on who left earlier or later.

Anyway - the most important thing is, that THEY PLAYED.

  • Its worth noting that for the preperation of this film, A Night to remember, many people, who witnessed the event, were interview. Strangely not one them mentioned that the stern end broke off the ship.

  • Despite the stars just there was darkness when the lights went out. Many people said that the ship split in two but it was not clear and the investigation was closed stating that the ship sank without cracking. The movie was based on the Walter Lord's homonymous book in wich he prefered to use the official statment. I think for survivors, who were in the movie set in 1958, this was not important anymore.

  • @max444ist It could have been because they were panicking so much. If it were me I would probably not have noticed myself, freezing to death in the middle of the Atlantic.

  • @max444ist The breakup was not as obvious and spectacular as Cameron's movie showed it. In reality, much of it was hidden just below the waterline and the darkness made it even more difficult to see. I believe the sinking looked much like most of the traditional images, except to those close enough to see the fracture.

  • according to the survivors tales in books and notes this was the last song the band played onboard of the Titanic, fitting ending for those who lived though the music.....

here always thinked if I can pick something to do, if not with my family but alone would like to see the sunrise while listening "The Angel Song" by Great White

  • don't know but this movie makes me cry... the cameron version just looks fake after a while, the old ones still stand today.

  • Did anyone else notice that the one who started playing first wore the same thing in BOTH Titanic movies?

  • movies in the past sucked. they showed no emotionalism

  • Thats the first titanic by james cameron in roman times

  • this is where i started crying during the titanic

  • PENA QUE O TITANIC N QUEBROU

  • I like this better than the one in james cameron's movie.

  • that chello player has a nice voice

  • I will play this song, in this version, at the funeral of my great uncle...

    RIP Heinrich Gruber :(

  • This is the best movie 'bout the Titanic ever made

  • [..]

But to stand an' be still to the Birken'ead drill is a damn tough bullet to chew,

    [..]

So they stood an' was still to the Birken'ead drill, soldier an' sailor too

    [..]

    - R. Kipling, "Birkenhead Drill"

  • i know if the worlds end you will play this song...

  • Which version of nearer my god to thee is this?... sorry, it just... sounds different from James Cameron's version, and the song on the titanic film that came out 5 years before this.

  • @matrixfan127 This is the "Horbury" version, one of the two versions bandleader Wallace Hartley probably was familiar with, the other being "Propior Dio," that his father had used at church for over 30 years.

Cameron's movie depicts him as playing the "Bethany" version he quite certainly wasn't familiar with.

  • Machs gut Hauptmann, machs gut........,

  • Wait was there an other version older version of movie titanic? What is this?

  • @wraith149 i get it you were playing on the movie titanic but if your meaning in real then your just cruel to others who died on it

  • Is this the older version of nearer my god to thee, that was played on the titanic, or was the newer version (like in the 1997 movie) played on the titanic?

  • this is the BEST titanic movie ever and that is the truth, a well known fact, the absolute truth.

  • w w w.spiegel.de/panorama/leute/0,1518,627898,00.html

  • He is a bastatd an he shames the Victims of the Titanic. In a german Magazin was written last year that Millvina Dean died. She was the last survivor. She was borned 1909. The magazin was the Spiegel.

So wraith149 why you are lying and if you are the last one than congratulation my mum is 65 and she cant work with the internet. And yo must be over hundred. But no one knows you. Sick idiot

  • somepeople would i have cryed if they knew they were dieing i would do like thouse men sing about my lord and play my violin

  • o gosh, I thought the 1997 film with DiCaprio was the original Titanic xD

  • What? There was another Titanic? Foreals?!

  • @YounngRose it's not another Titanic. it's another movie about the tragedy. At the polish wiki page of RMS Titanic (not the movie Titanic), there are many movies about it: 1. Saved from the Titanic (1912), In Nacht und Eis (1912), Atlantic (1929) Titanic (1943), Titanic (1953), A Night to Remember (1958), S.O.S. Titanic (1979), Raise the Titanic (1980), Titanic (mini series on tv, 1996), Titanic (1997) - the one u know, Titanic – animated movie - 2001, Ghosts of The Abyss 3D (2003).

    :)

  • @usuallylovely DAMN! lol. I want to watch them all but its waaaaaaay too many and it'll just be the same story over and over again. Thanks

  • @YounngRose yeah, i want to see them all too. "Titanic" was on tv yesterday, and i wanted some info about the ship so i read wiki page, and i realized that there are so many movies about it. i don't think that it's able to watch them all ;). and i wonder.. why almost no one knows other movies about it..

  • @usuallylovely and of course, you're welcome! :)

  • @usuallylovely Exactly. Thats why I'm so surprised.

  • @usuallylovely

sooo... James Cameron didnt really "created" his version of the Titanic's disaster fr his movie. ^^'

he just redone this movie part (and maybe many others from the other ones). XP

  • @YMangaka well he didn't really redone the movie, he created his own version. with the story of love of Rose and Jack ;). and yeah, as far as I know, there is one scene from this film "A Night To Remember" ;)

  • @usuallylovely

yea he just put that romance sh*t in it (to please the feminine public) but the rest of his movie, like for this scene by example, is just plagiarism. XP lol

  • @YMangaka no, no. it's not true. it's not plagiarism. it's just like u would said that every other movie about II world war or sth is plagiarism ;) it's not. by the way, Titanic by J. Cameron is the best of those movies about Titanic ;).

  • @usuallylovely

    Of course ! ^^'

I didnt said it was plagiarism cause of the Titanic story in itself... but cause of THIS specific part of the movie : musicians playing while the ship is sinking and everybody try to save themselves. THAT is plagiarism by Cameron. ^^'

btw, Cameron's Titanic SURELY is the best movie since it got modern technology effects and costed millions. XP

  • @YMangaka Oh my god....plagiarism? It's not plagiarism at all. Witnesses on the Titanic claim the band continued to play while the ship sank.

  • @BigUnitMcGee

    oh really?... hm... ^^'

  • @YMangaka Yes, really. "'Nearer, My God, to Thee' is associated with the RMS Titanic, as one passenger reported that the ship's band played the hymn as the Titanic sank". - Wikipedia, then search for "Nearer My God To Thee". There's a small section on it's association with the Titanic.

  • @BigUnitMcGee

    oh... ok.

  • @YMangaka Plagiarism's a pretty serious accusation, maybe you'll get your facts straight before you accuse someone else.

  • @BigUnitMcGee

    ...9_9

  • @YMangaka it wasn't "nearer my god to thee" for sure, but it possible it was this song :).

    chill people :).

  • @usuallylovely

    maybe... who knows. ^^'

  • Music has no Religion, it only has soul, and this soul is what fills you with Emotion, No matter who worte it, if it is truely beautiful it is loved by many.

    Such as this song.

  • wow... its german, i can actually understand it ....

  • :( I cried when the captain wanted to die to give up your life is something that many people do because people are so selfish, this was the last song 1,500 people heard in there lifes before shrilling cries came and the freezing water killed them and what did the rich people do? They sat there in there half empty boats and just watched I would smack them right now!!

  • The cello player on board the Titanic was a guy name John Clerk from Liverpool and after the poor man had drowned his Widow go a bill for his suit, He was not employed by the White Star Line but by a firm of contractors.

  • Astonishingly moving scene from the best cinematic telling of the Titanic's demise. Never fails to bring a tear to the eye.

  • This part was the best, i wanna find the scene from titanic

  • sinking fast

  • They were amazing musicians. And the violin something beautiful.

    Marek from Slovakia..

  • It has been sung by Mormon choirs, but it wasn't written by a Mormon. It was written in 1841, only eleven years after Joseph Smith's claims to be translating the Book of Mormon. The lyrics were by an English Unitarian called Sarah Fuller Flower Adams and the music was by her sister, Eliza Flower. Hope this helps.

  • this is like, one of my most favorite part from movie. i cried so much.

  • @cpmusic @Boico101 You're both right. Sarah and Eliza Adams wrote this song, and Mormons use it as a hymn, but a different melody. There are multiple versions.

  • this is mormon! not christian

  • @cpmusic What? No it's not. It was written by a Christian English poet.

  • My band did a folk version of this song.

    youtube.com/watch?v=xCsVebdEpuY

Let me know what you think. Thanks for putting this video up!

  • This is infinitely better than James Cameron's pile of crap.

  • @Alversia james cameron's was good but not as good as this.

  • Wow the effects look incredible for the year this came out!! I never would have thought it looked this good.......I really want to see this film now! :D

  • What version was this song?

  • the actor playing Stanley Lord really looked like him

  • Of all the movies made about the Titanic in the past 100 years, ANTR is the best one, & it isn't even called 'Titanic.'

  • @splashenful this is the movie that was based on the Walter Lord book "A Night To Remember" which he wrote about the Titanic disaster. Therefore, it is the most accuate rendition of that tragedy. Mr. Lord interviewed many survivors before he wrote his book!

  • @chicotower Yes, back when the book & the movie were made, there were far more survivors of the disaster than there are today.

  • When one of them starts playing, they're thinking "Why not, for old times sake?" "Even if we die, we will die with this memory in mind.".

  • That was quite terrible German...

  • @wraith149 yeah right your user name disprove that. well user info.

Titanics sinking is ca 99 years ago, so either you was very young, and is very old now, or just very old.

Cmon pal i doubt a person over 100 is on youtube.

    sorry i dont believe you.

  • @supervegito2277 That and the fact that the last survivor of Titanic died in 2009.

  • @wraith149 Really? And which lifeboat did that happen to be and from which side of the ship was it launched? Who were your fellow passengers inside that boat? If you can answer those questions, then you must surely know that the lifeboats did NOT exactly head for New York without a bit of 'assistance'....

  • @wraith149 The last Titanic survivor died in 2009. Why u lie, wraith149?

  • @wraith149

Unless you can prove it we can't believe you, because the oldest person on the Titanic is already dead.

  • @America100000able You mean the youngest hence time would make them now old... not counting the children who would of forgotten it by their 20's

  • @wraith149 you are a terible liar and im insulted that you disrespect the memory of Titanic and all those involved by claiming such things. May God have mercy on your soul!

  • @wraith149 you sir or madam, are a dumb ass. The last woman to have been on that ship died 13 years ago. She was 102 years old.

  • @DarkDemonWolf76 actually only about 2 years ago someone that was a baby girl on the titanic passed away and was the last survivor left.

  • @history380 >.> so she was 93?

  • @DarkDemonWolf76 "No! 97!"

    - her own words just a few months before her passing away, see:

    /watch?v=icq_Zp4x3sI

    2009 minus 1912 equals 97.

  • @Hirvassalo so she was when it went down?
