I agree! I thought the movie was ok when I first saw it... then I read the book. The Sci-Fi Miniseries not only does the book justice, it follows it nearly exactly! They made another movie(Children of Dune) based off the next two books too. That also follows the books closely.
If you are going to see DUNE then you have to see the 4 hour or so version that i saw on TV years ago with a narrator and illustrations setting up the history of the DUNE universe. That version does work.
The 2 hour or so version doesnt. Its flat and uninteresting.
Anyway, the TV miniseries is far better than the film.
The funny thing about Dune is that it is 90% about the interaction of its human cast, with little need for its extravagant sets and vfx.
Its not about Luke Skywalker jumping in a spaceship and running a bombing campaign against a large space station, but how Paul Atredies behaves towards his family, people and enemies.
Dune is more Laurence of Arabia or The Four Feathers, than it is Flash Gordon. A 3 hour epic was quite possible here. I still love Lynch's Dune for what it is , though.

I had no idea who this was when I saw the documentary. He and the others were very right though.

Dune was pure torture to sit through.
