@fernieboy100 "When you spin a basketball on your finger does the air in the room spin with it ? Yes or no answer will suffice - not but but but ......"
@Anonamouse7 Friction ? you said the atmosphere was spinning with the earth did you not ? so either it is or it isn't - I already know it isn't that's why I get a kick out of you guys who say one thing then change your tune when confronted with clearly seen facts that anyone can see, even those without a college degree can see it plain as day.At first its oh your so dumb the atmosphere spins with earth then 2 minutes later when asked about cloud movement the story totally changes !!!! hilarious
@fernieboy100 Yes, friction. The atmosphere is spinning with the Earth because of friction between the ground and itself.
As for weather patterns, can I give an analogy? You are on a train that's travelling at a constant velocity along a perfect track (i.e. no x,y or z acceleration). When you are in the train you can move in all directions with ease, but you do not effect the course of the train, nor does the train limit your movement. It's a similar situation with the atmosphere...
Strictly speaking you mean drag (because you are talking about a gas). And I am not just being pedantic. There is an important difference. Drag increases significantly with velocity. Having said that the Earth's atmosphere (gas) does not rotate because it is being dragged along by the crust. It rotates because, like the crust (solid) and the inner core (liquid), it has angular momentum. Gas bodies rotate without any drag from solid surfaces do they not?
@ar2de2em2 I have now heard 2 theories - one person said that as the earth was spinning the gases that formed the atmosphere were slowly let out of the earths crust and they have been moving with the earth ever since - and now others say the earth was spinning and this spinning caused all the gases in the atmosphere to spin at the same speed as the earth is spinning - to me both of those sound very unlikely - they cannot be demonstrated at all and then the excuse is because space is a vaccum
this is the thing with false science it is like a riddle that can't be solved - you see since we don't have a vaccum effect down here on earth- It's just a way to get out of demonstrating it or proving it. Like evolution it happened millions of years ago and also it happens sooo slowly that we can't see it - there is always a riddle like this at the end of all false science.
@sal9000x Why don't you ut your money where your mouth is and show us with an experiment that the earth is spinning and the atmosphere is spinning with it - because neither one is spinning - the wind and movement of clouds is from circulation caused by different air temperatures - has nothing at all to do with the earths spin - its simply not spinning and neither is the atmopshere - prove me wrong with an experiment if you are so positive - I have effectively shown the earth is not spinning.
@fernieboy1005:50 The earths surface wont be seen moving because the camera is fix onto the Earth. Its like if i put a dot on your forearm with a sharpy, that your arm doesnt move cause the dot hasnt moved from the original spot on your arm. The reason the stars and clouds are moving in different directions is that while the earth is spinning its also orbiting around the sun. Thus the stars movement wouldnt follow that of earths rotation. As for the atmosphere & the earths rotation, i dont know
yes, the bulk of the atmosphere rotates along with the planet, but that in no way means that *every* component of the atmosphere rotates at exactly the same rate (clouds, the jet stream). Consider something like Jupiter: the bulk of it's atmosphere rotates but smaller components have independent motions (e.g., the big red spot). The subject of atmospheric motions is not a simplistic one; it's not as simple as "well the clouds move." There's a LOT of complicated fluid dynamics involved.
@CarlSagan6 Okay so on one hand the atmosphere near the surface spins in time with the earth when people want to refute my experiment - but then when the movement of clouds is mentioned - it then switches and now the atmosphere is not moving with the surface of the earth ......... gotcha
@fernieboy100 bingo! there's differential rotation going on! The speed of overhead clouds is in no way a *direct* reflection of the wind speed near the ground. Again, the bulk of the atmosphere moves along with the earth, but there are portions with independent motions (like you said, convection due to the sun) Google "atmosphere rotation" and check out the first link.
@fernieboy100 Going back to the helicopter experiment: the reason the helicopter doesn't "lag behind" as the earth rotates is due to the fact that, besides some minor air current, there is very little force acting upon it. The helicopter doesn't hover over practically the same spot because the lower atmosphere "pushes it along." Rather, it maintains the same angular momentum in the air as it had on the ground because, again, there is little net force (like drag) acting upon it.
@stuttgurth Alright well that's fine but how come we don't see the atmosphere spinning with the earth ? I mean that is the big excuse and big claim as to why helicopters can hover and land in the exact same spot over top of a 1000 mph spinning earth............
@fernieboy100 Because its all relative. If i am moving at 1000mph and you are moving at 1000mph in the same direcetion, we have the same force in the same direction applying on us. If you are then hit by another force then you will cease to move with me. That argument could be made for the atmosphere moving separately from the earth, with the force being caused by heat from the sun. you are traveling (or not) with the earth so thats why you would see this. It doesnt disprove its spinning
@stuttgurth It's all relative ....... the claim was that the air is moving with the surface of the earth - either it is or it isn't - I mean that is the claim I have heard hundreds of times - but when we test that claim it fails in a big way - its just simply not true. The earth is not spinning and the air is not spinning with it at all. We have a motionless earth with weather systems caused by heat differences - the atmosphere is definitely not moving with the earth.
@fernieboy100 because the eatmosphere isnt moving with the earth it doesnt mean the earth isnt moving. thats like saying if i get up and walk from this desk, that proves the earth isnt spinning. No that means a force was applied on me in a direction horizontal to the earth and it caused me to move in that direction RELATIVE to the earth.
@fernieboy100 Well im going to assume your hellicopter comment is talking about one on a windless day. A helicopter can do this because there is no net force acting on it. This is because as it takes off it is moving at the same speeed as the atmosphere, which, with the exception of wind, is moving with the surface. Once again it doesnt disprove it.

It's friction basically. You seem under the impression that there is no friction between the surface and the atmosphere. This is incorrect.

way to delete posts without answering them, wind and clouds are explained by Coriolis Forces.look it up rather then keep the same thing
the stars we see are moving, and so it the earth, their not in the same place they were when we invented astrological signs 2 thousand years ago.
