African Grey's like the water, but dont like water being sprayed at them, they only bathe init and throw it about like I do. All African Grey's are different.
i use a large 4" deep skillet pan, and my grey goes to town in it, completely submerges himself in a bathing fantasia every 2 weeks or so; yes, he goes all the way under; but he hates going in the shower
@trabbin8 We used to have one of those water wands they use for showering flowers and hooked it ou to the water spicket outside. When I turned it on, my birds would take a bath in it. It actually simulated rain. My Gray would also come into the shower.
My grey also puts his feet in his water bowl and tries to get wet! It's hilarious to watch. (At least his feet don't stink). I tried everything with sprays, bowls, etc. but finally started taking him in the shower with me once a week. He isn't crazy about it but doesn't fight too much.
Great Video. Maybe this explains why my Grey stands on the edge of its water bowl and throws the water all over the place with her beak.... sometime she dangles upside down and dse the same
My Grey does exactly like Tanrat7 said. Won't get in any bowl but his water bowl and only when I fill it up with fresh water. I've tried the shower, didn't work. Doesn't like the spray washes either.
my parakeet does this in my ice water, but he only does it when the glass is clear, and he can see through it. he tried it once when he was little, and it was a blue glass...he took a bath in my apple juice!! he learns quickly.
My african grey takes baths in his water dish, or at least tries to LOL He sticks his feet in and beak and starts flapping his wings and I guess the water splashes out and gets on him because when he is done, the water level is very low and its all dirty lol I have put bigger bowls of water in his cage so he could take a real bath. Forget it, He wanted nothing to do with it. He is happy with his little water dish lol
we have an african grey and a red bellied coneur and he takes baths in the watering bowl and our african thinks shes tiny enough to and all she does is wash her face :)
2/2 The energy that they expressed when they are bathing - and the recovering from being wet helps to prevent some of those temper tantrums that can occur so frequently in captivity!
I got this knowledge from a book i once had. There are so many small things that is important to know as a owner of a grey parrot! So, go study.
My grey loves water. I take him outside (wings trimmed) and and he climbs on a banana leaf or bamboo branch and I do spray him. Then I have a huge basin with an indention like the one in this video that he does the same thing as this bird, fluffs up and takes a bath every day.
I have 40 canaries, too, they love taking baths every morning.
1/2 Wild gray parrots spent hundreds of generations evolving a metabolism that wuld enable them to function fully in the rain (they can reproduce, feed, nest and raise youngsters while they are wet). Rainfall is of course missing in captivity, and all the energi the bird need to survive wet is unused. This lost access to rainfall represents lost exercise! And it culd lead to frustration!! Of course they dont like to be forced (spraying and so on..), but give them the opportunity!
ANYONE WHO THINKS GREYS DON'T LIKE WATER: TRY PUTTING ICE IN SPRING WATER! in their bath or their waterbowl. Try it out. THEY LOOOOVE COLD WATER!! Even if you've been spraying your grey down with water bottles for YEARS try it. It mimicks their natural bathing habits (it gets cold in the morning where they're from)
OMFG that is sooooo cute. I would always see them in the pet store but my mother always said she would never let me get one BUT I WANT ONE SOOO MUCH!!!!
Mine hates a spray or a shower but willing bathes in a water bowl. We just leave him plenty of water for whenever he wishes. Because they have preening powder, I don't worry about it. He does a great job of taking care of his own personal hygiene. lol! Now if I can just get him to clean his cage....
@AmericanRide007 not true, if you made sure the bird while it was young, learned to fly properly in your house, then when you take him outside he'll fly and come back to you when you call him/her....
most people make the mistake of taking a bird that doesnt know how to fly outside, the bird will flap its wings and wont know how to land, making him/her just fly away till it gets tired and lands somewhere far away, which eventually ends up in hawk attacks unless someone finds them first
Wonderful vid, are those congos? My friend owns a congo, and he makes the funniest noises, like doorbells ringing, water dripping, he even whistles whole songs.
The one taking its bath is so CUUUUTTTTEEEE! I used to work with them and train them at a pet center. Wow! I wish that every owner would threat their grey as good as you do! :)
Love that Lilly. You did a good job with the video. Perfect choice of music... Lilly does rather remind me of Gene Kelly dancing through puddles. Wonderful image! I'm going to try giving a birdbath to my CAG Ruby... It's been only showers until today. Thanks.
What a great environment for these birds! My African Grey takes showers with me at least once a week - he was miserable at first but now really gets into it and goes very willingly. After we started the showers he started bathing on his own in his water dish. His feather condition is always great now. I'll have to set a pan of water out for him and see what happens. Thanks for sharing.
Very VERY cute, that is great to see her taking a bath like that. we tried to get my CAG ponti to take a bath, even bought her a cool little water fountain, but she won't touch it; she prefers a spray-bottle shower about every morning instead. Beautiful birds you have, you can tell they are happy and well-cared for!
Its fine to buy hand reared birds
