I said nothing about her becoming a long distance runner I was mearly using it as a scientific example on how the body works, she is a begginer so she needs the right advice from the start, which is...I suggest more weight training than cardio and when she does do her cardio ir should be short bursts such as rowing for 20 seconds rest for 20 seconds, do you understand that Im disagreeing with you about the whole running for hours or? Im not sure if youve actually taken in any I have just said.
You're overthinking it a bit. She's a beginner, so I doubt she has to worry about becoming a long distance runner or plateauing. Like I said, a combination of workouts is best, but I doubt you're motivating her very much by telling her it's all "the worst" and "completely wrong". At her stage it's important to get up and get moving, she can refine it all when she has some experience.
Also can I just say Treadmill for hours would actually be one of the worst things you could do, yes you might lose a little bit of weight at the start but you will soon plateu and this is something you definately want to avoid.
@sweetkisses4uonly if you go on a treadmill at relatively high speeds for several hours or do circuits, you should lose weight fast. remember that you can't lose kilos in a day. yuo didn't put it on in a few days, so you won't lose it that fast either.
and remember that your diet is a huge part. eat healthy and light. veg, fruit, lean meat, nuts, rice and water. no soda, sugar or fried stuff.
Treadmill for hours sorry mate but thats completely wrong. Aerobic exercise raises your metabolism for up to 12 hours after exercise. High intensity sprints or resistance exercise (using weights) raises the metabolism for up to 48 hours. Really intense weight lifting raises the metabolism for up to 72 hours. So people that are trying to lose weight performing 6-12RM is best if you have good form and for cardio keep it at shorts sprints. Hope that helps.
@TheBoxingStore What is wrong about it? If she does a lot of cardio, she burns a lot of calories. Together with eating right, she loses weight. Nothing wrong with that. I agree that combining weights and cardio is the best option, but she's willing to work out every day. For a beginner, doing weights every day is not the way to go. Cardio is simpler. The metabolism argument is not strong if you are going to work out daily. Long cardio burns more calories than short cardio (at same intensity).
The body becomes really energy efficient with lower intensity aerobic exercise (which if she is running for more than 30 minutes it would have to be fairly low intensity), so you actually end up burning fewer kilojules next time you do that exact same 5km on the treadmill. Loads of aerobic exercise stimulates the production of stress hormones, which actually breakdown tissue. So distance runners are skinny, but have essentially more body fat and less muscle mass than a sprinter as the
stress hormones break down muscle as well as fat. You're still leaner than if you did no exercise at all, but in comparisonto to a sprint athlete, your a skinny fat person. I would suggest primarily for weight loss clients to do weights around 3-5 days per week and mix it with sprints for this reason. Long duration cardio exercise is an old school method of training and as I said before is very bad for weight loss in the long term.
