You guys all know this is a PRE-quel right? As in, this happens before Isaac gets to the Ishimura. Infact, at the end of the movie you see the ship that Isaac is on trying to call the Ishimura. @vinny8589 I believe, and someone correct me if im wrong, but Isaac wasnt a miner, he was an engineer, therefore you could say his toolset might have been different. This also explains why the weapons you find in DS are spread out, perhaps other engineers dropped them.

Also, it wasnt conventional mining like you and I would think, but they physically broke up the planet and took the ore directly on board. As far as im aware, at no point did the miners themselves use hand tools in the process

I figured out what the glowing things on their back's are used for. It's to keep their spines rigid to keep from being crushed by the high gravity. But that doesn't explain why they use it inside the habitats.

I guess when you're that far into deep space, you need everybody functional and if they're not you need to get it that way. The RIG helps keep a fix on on a person's condition and location. So I guess they keep it on like how some people keep on dulcimeters.
