@hyenachase, Duran was head and shoulders above all lightweights. Though there were many great fighters at that wt class during that time, Duran was special.
He could've tacked on a super light wt. And jr welter wt. titles but instead went strait for the best at welterweight which was Leonard.
I believe this brought out the best in Duran, whom I had way ahead on my score card. 2 great fighters no doubt!!
Both fighter are giving and taking punches and yet the announcers keep saying Duran is hurt!! It's obvious they have a predisposition on who they want to win this fight. Great fight from 2 great fighters in their
what really irritates me is when these announcers try to say what a fighter is feeling or thinking, they have no way of knowing if that fighter is feeling or thinking something.
los golpes mas fuertes son los de duran, que leonard por su rapidez use rafagas rapidas y vistosas, eso no vale, duran es mas consistente en el ataque.
Duran was up 3 rounds to 1 and fought great in those rounds. Ray came on strong 2nd half of the fight.
Keep in mind BODY SHOTS...count as points and 2nd hald when Duran gets Ray on the ropes..SRL is landing body shots which slowed Duran down. Head shots is NOT ALL that counts now.
Your judging because Duran got Ray on the ropes and assuming he won those rounds. Like i said Ray won rounds 1, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 14 and 15.
The refs basically agreed and so did Freddie Pacheko who had it even after 14 rounds. Watch the ronds i have Ray winning.
Round 1...What did Duran do? Ray counters off the ropes with a 1-2 and those were the only solid shots connected that round. Many of the rounds i had Ray winning, all Duran is doing is backing Ray up but NOT LANDING...
SRL clearly won rounds 1, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 14 and 15 with rounds 7 abd 8 tossups
I think you have Duran fans who don't know how to score fights who think judging a round is seing a guy go backwards. If thats the case then Oscar beat Floyd Mayweather. In the later rounds Duran had Ray on the ropes but SRL was actually landing the solid shots. Look at round 11. Ray is on the ropes, but he's the one landing the solid shots.
I don't care who you guys liked in this fight. It was a great fight! This is what we should have saw from the Mayweather and Mosely fight. Its a shame we have to go back and look at old fights to see a good brawl.
Duran took a terrific beating to the body in round 12. Even though he wilted badly from the beating he took, you have to give Duran credit for standing up to that type of assault.
To listen to the commentators through the fight, you might think the fight was scored 150-135 Leonard.
I admit it was close, Duran won it, but the commentators are ridiculously biased. They might as well have said "And Ray blocks ANOTHER one with his face!"
You're obviously a Duran fan, because I find their commentating favoring Duran. They talk about him hurting Leonard on arm punches that don't even land.
Then, the next round, they'll talk about Leonard favorably. They are prone to exaggeration. It's terrible announcing.
It's interesting how you can see new things each time you watch a fight.
I never noticed how defeated Duran was after the 13th round. He was emasculated and beaten like a greasy dog.
He lost the last two rounds, badly, and then quit his next fight against Leonard. Leonard's bodywork was so much more effective than Duran's, Duran broke and yielded. He tried in the 14th though, but he was a beaten fighter. The 15th he was happy to submit to Leonard's stronger will.
What, are you living in some bizarre opposite world, TA152H01? Duran dominated the 13th and knew he'd put the fight in the bank. Broke and yielded? I suggest you watch it again but this time with your head outta' your ass.
You're really not that ignorant, are you? Do you know anything about boxing?
In a championship fight, especially a grueling one like this that has so many different opinions, you don't give away rounds. Duran simply expired and yielded because he couldn't win the rounds, not because he wanted to give them away.
I gave round 13 to Duran, but not in a dominating way. Two judges gave it to Leonard. It was pretty close. Duran tried the 14th, but was just out manned. The 15th, he yielded.
Well, you know, Leonard was a much more talented fighter than Robinson, but most people don't have an ability to think for themselves, so they just go by what other people say. Robinson is considered the best pound for pound, so the cattle don't question it.
But, if you watch him, he'd get outclassed by Leonard. He hit harder, and had a great chin, but was so much slower, had TERRIBLE defense, a bad jab, and just wasn't as athletic, or even close.
well after 200 fights what you expect him to be at his best? besides leaonard never gave hagler a rematch cuz he knew what would happen, instead duran gave him a rematch right away
Hagler wasn't exactly banging down the door for a rematch, and in any rate would have been beaten even worse. Hagler never had Leonard's talent, or even approached it, and he was far past his prime that fight. Leonard knew it. Leonard was also past his prime when he fought Hagler, and his stamina was terrible.
That fight meant nothing. Both were not the same fighters as they were, and I'm glad we were spared another fight. I never liked seeing great fighters look bad, and they both did
Hagler was disgusted after the decision, and said he was done with boxing. Leonard said after the fight, when asked if there was much chance of a rematch, that there had never been any serious contact between both parties. He said he respected that Hagler was one of the few guys that walked away and never came back.
Hagler was done. He had nothing left even before his fight, and looked pitiful during it. Another fight wasn't necessary. Neither fighter was great anymore.
i woudlnt say pitiful , specially cuz most of the fight leonard just kept running away from him, cuz he knew that he would be defeated if he entered the fight exchanging punches with hagler, instead he just dance around him and ran, punching from outside, to me its not the most entertaining fighting styles with the info on the re match its hard for me tosay whats true cuz some sites said leonard refuse the re match others say hagler didnt ask for it so im still dubious on that matter
Leonard outpunched him when he was fresh too, because Hagler was so slow. Hagler looked really, really slow in the fight. Actually, he did the fight before against Mugabi, that's why Leonard wanted to fight him.
Hagler was done. Another fight wasn't going to change the fact he was well past his prime. So was Leonard, for that matter.
Ya know,..at 1;30, ferdie starts cryin that 'he hurt duran'!,.when in fact roberto nails leonard with 4 shots, then keeps comin, yet ferdie still says leonard has him in trouble,...hilarious. he kept comin' the whole fight,..forcing the tempo. On straight right hands, left hooks to the body alone Duran pummeled Ray. i think if Ray wasnt naturally bigger n in supreme shape he wouldda fallen at least twice in this fight. he fought his ass off too, just want meant to be.
Leonard landed some very hard shots to Duran's body in the 12th. You can see how they hurt Duran by the way he walks back to his corner. He lost the next three rounds on the scorecards.
one of the poorest announced fights in boxing history, given the greatness of the fight. mostly pro leonard. in reality duran outhustled, out punched, and out boxed leonard--two weight classes up and a bit passed his prime while leonard was in his prime. this fight will always be a blemish on leonard's career because he was beaton beyond his usual antics and favoritism.
I'll agree they are horrible announcers, but Duran outhustling is absurd. He lost the the last three rounds on the scorecards, the last two unanimously.
I scored this fight for Leonard pretty easily, but I count clean punches a lot. Leonard landed far more. If you count groping and aggression, then you'd give Duran some rounds I gave Leonard, and score it differently.
This was not a blemish, people were amazed that Leonard fought so well fighting Duran's style. Many thought he won.
all that leonard did was grab durant thas all tahta he did could you imagin if durant waz at his prime i dont think that leonard had a chance there but leaonanrd is good i give him credit but he was grabing too much
In the old days matches could be scheduled to go 45 rounds and last for many hours and that would be what is required here to come up with a winner. Much is said about Duran's power but I don't see much damage to Leonard's face at the end of this fight. Leonard seems to have more endurance and was coming on in the final round so I suspect Leonard's chances increase as the fight goes on. I give the first few rounds to Duran but round 10 was clearly Leonards. I rate leonard better than robinson.
how can you rate leonard ahead of robinson? that is one of the dumbest comments EVER. roberto is past his prime here, he was fighting 2 weight classes higher than his prime, he beat leonard in his prime. if you look at the look on leonard's face after the fight before the decision, you can see it in his eyes, he KNOWS he was beaten.
Duran was spent, and beaten. He lost all the late rounds. He took so many clean shots, but, these announcers are horrible. Duran missed three big shots and they say he hurt Leonard.
Robinson wasn't really in the same class as Leonard. He didn't have much of a jab, had much slower hands, had no defense, and struggled against bums like LaMotta, who wouldn't have been a top 10 fighter in the 1970s, or 1980s. But, to sound smart, people like to say he was the best.
Duran has hit a complete row of teeth back in Leonard's mouth.
(That's super-middleweight/light-heavyweight power coming off a lightweight frame.) Leonard stated this in a documentary about Duran here on the Tube. It should be easy to find.
Punches in the face don't hurt that much (unless it's your nose, but normaly adrealine takes care of that). The body-punches can hurt alot, and Duran likes going to the body. Bodypunches will slow you down.
who else would like to mute this f'n no know nothing commentators. Particularly, Dundee's old friend Pacheco? Like that guy's going to call it like it happened.
This was not like Manila. It is Ali-Frazier I in NY, Madison Square Garden. As was the case in NY, One fighter was just not going to be stopped. One fighter threw flashy punches, the other just came forward and landed the HEAVIER shots. Leonard took a beating, give him credit though, he fought well against the greatest fighter on that night. Roberto was AMAZING.This was the last of "that" Roberto, he got satisfied and came into the rematch way out of shape. His management(Don King) sold him out.
robertina duran quit because he was a coward with no balls,he could never adjust to his opponents should they switch games during fights
duran did well if he knew what you was going to do but if you changed it up a little,he was a clueless little beaner
duran was exposed in the second leonard fight as a coward and a fraud and he was also exposed as a boxer against bums like kirland laing and robbie simms
roberto, if he lives to be a 100, could still kick your little girly ass. go back to watching your braindead heros in rastling, your age is higher than your iq.
If you look at the fight from a judges seat looking at each round with a microscope you will give it to Duran. But Leonard fought like a champion should to retain his title.Leonard should have retained his title.
gran boxeador roberto duran pa mi era mejor que leonard gano este combate en buena ley lastima que para el sugundo no se preparara como es debido y por desgracia no fue la unica vez vs benitez y hears hizo parecido
commentators were on Leonard's side. This was Duran's round. He hurt Leonard and had HIM going. Leonard was fighting on pure instinct here. Watch Duran return to his corner. Hurt? Ha!
That is the dumbest thing anyone has said about this fight, Leonard never had the power to hurt Duran, NEVER. If anyone has been hurt in this fight, it wasn't Duran, it was Leonard, there's no question and trying to prove me wrong obviously means you are watching the wrong fight
@slickdon1 you're an idiot if you think Leonard could ever hurt Duran. And if you actually watch the second fight, Duran was also never hurt. He just got too lazy to chase around Leonard the Clown. Not to mention he was outta shape for the fight in the first place. The No Mas Fight was definitely an overrated win by Leonard. In either fight you never see Duran actually rocked, but you see Leonard rocked several times, and if you don't think so, you're watching the wrong fight
@makunouchi3 OK..to say duran wasn't hurt ever in their fights is insane. look at the last seconds of this clip. in the exchange before the bell, he did seem hurt when the crowd erupted. with that said, that is the only time i've seen him hurt in the fight.
give ray some credit, he's been getting killed in this fight to the body and he finished.
both are HALL OF FAMERS relax...... they're legends
@makunouchi3 Leonard hurt Duran twice in their two fights. He hit him with a double uppercut earlier in this fight that stunned Duran for a few seconds, but nothing serious. In fight 2, he landed a bomb to the body that sounded like an M-80. After that, Duran was done, and had to quit a few rounds later. It took all the life out of him.
He wasn't hurt in the 13th, he was just taking a beating to the body and was exhausted. He wasn't stunned at all.
@makunouchi3 are you just stubborn or are you just a dumbass? respect both of the fighters for giving us such an amazing fight. these people worked so hard to come out to this fight. and i am pretty sure your just a moron because Leonards punches definitely hurt. If you ever did boxing, which i doubt, ur prob just a fatass loser sitting at home criticizing people, anyways you try not to show you are hurt. Duran dominated the fight, but in numerous cases he was hurt by Leonards punches.
@JackyZProductions Way to comment on something I said over a year ago. I do respect both fighters? Leonard has some serious heart and toughness, but if anyone's legs were wobbled in the fight, it were Leonard's, not Duran's.
@JackyZProductions You make some crazy accusations. I never said Leonard's punches didn't hurt, they just didn't make much of an impact on Duran. I actually have been in the ring before, 3-1 in amateur boxing, 8-0 in amateur muay thai, 5-2 in amateur MMA, and a certified muay thai instructor. I ain't the best and I probably will never be, but I know fighting, you punk ass. And I'm not fat either bitch, I'm done with you and done with your stupid argument. Eat a dick, bitch.
I get so sick of the announcers saying someone is hurt every time either guy lands a good punch. Half the time they're saying Sugar Ray is hurt when its obvious Duran is missing punches in the second half of the fight
All fighters clinch a little bit. To do it the entire fight can be a cowardly form of defense. This is a boxing match after all. But to hold the other man's head down is actually an illegal tactic. Leonard for some reason was allowed to do both ALL night long.
Then again not clinching is the very thing that cost Hearns to lose to Leonard the first time. So I guess my theory does hold relatively true even in this case.
A taller longer armed guy really has no choice but to hold when a shorter more compact guy gets in too close to him. You rarely see a shorter guy with shorter arms holding a taller guy, just how it is. If no holding was allowed Mike Tyson would have probably never lost. The only way to beat Tyson was to tie him up when he gets too close, even Lennox may not have been able to beat him without clinching. Without clinching shorter guys would rule boxing and taller guys would have little chance.
If Duran was 25 instead of almost 30 this fight would not have gone 5 rounds. Duran is so much better than Leonard ever was.Duran jumped two weight classes and beat the media darling and a lot of people lost alot of money. Leonard was never really that great.
duran is duran,,,,,,i am still waiting for a fighter black white or yellow,,that can go 69-1,,,disputed loss reversed with two ko,s,,,and bring a reputation as fierce, determined ,with sugar ray robinson boxing and hitting skills,,,dont see one on the horizon,,
when another fighter comes along who is 69-1 and has reversed his only decision loss by two knockouts,,,and decide to move up and take a fighters welterweight title, and not just any fighter,,one who is being mentioned as possibly the greatest fighter of all time,,at that point it will have come full circle,,,,,im waiting
You're so off base it's not even funny! Ties up and hits while holding? Are you for real?! That was Leonard's MO for the entire fight! Get some visine and actually watch the fight Volstar88. What you are accusing Duran of doing Leonard did the whole fight!
Leonard was the one holding throughout the fight. Look at the way Padilla was stopping Leonard from clinging on. After that Ray was determined that Padilla would not get within 100 miles of one of his fights again.
Duran beat hisself. He got lazy, fat and did'nt watch his tape.like I said leonaord cant hit for nothing.besides he would'nt fight tommy hearns again for a decade cuase he knew he would lose.remember that before talking about leneord's greatness loyal doggie.
ray cant hit for nothing?lol you know crap about boxing.ray could k o you with both hands.learn boxing pleazzz then talk.oh yea .ray didnt fight hearns again becuase he RETIRED cause of his eye.and ummmm didnt ray make 1 of theee biggest comebacks everrrr k o ing hearns?thats a fighter.duran well lol 1 of the best pnd 4pnd fighters ever
First off Hearns was Tko'ed not knocked out by featherfist leanord.watch the fight hearns was tired he should've paced himself.he did,nt clinch like he should have. he was on the ropes already from leonarnd leaning on him he was tired and his legs were already giving.also rigt after the match leonard refused a rematch so hearns had to move up. also after the second fight how come leneard would,nt fight answer fear and smarts.
you idiot what about the 6th and 7th rd when hearns was out on his feet and as what emanuel steward said if leonard had landed 1 more punch he would have thrown the towel in and thats hearns own trainer saying this ! and also hearns never asked for a rematch moved up to lightmiddle after the this fight and never scored a a knockout for his next 4 fights ! know your boxing you fool lol
Round 13 -- what a classic! Duran was tremendous, and I give him great credit & the round. (Almost hate to say that with "Nastylefthook" making such ridiculous overblown remarks pro-Duran).
& you people got the nerve to say Ray wasnt no Ali. Shit too, you better be greatfull he wernt no Ali. Ali woulda played with Duran like he was a stupid little kid. If duran quit against Ray, he woulda had a heart attack fighting Ali. Ali woulda had duran so psyched out that he woulda run home to panama 2 days before the fight started
You're right Ray wasn't Ali who will ever be but remember Leanord was physched out and pissed before this match so he played into Duran's game went toe-to toe and got his ass kicked. He cant hit for nothing (Leanord)Of course Ali would do this to Duran he's a heavyweight and the greatest
Duran not only quit so he didnt have to get KOd, he cheated too, hired panama lewis to dope him up & break the ring. he sure knew he needed an edge to fight Ray I guess
thats rite cholo, if you gonna go in there against Ray, you BETTER cheat, at least YOU know it. at least YOU know thats the only chance you got. & if it dont work, guess maybe you better QUIT, cuz we all know you aint man enough to get KOd like everyone else would do. Then maybe you just make excuses too, tell everyone you wernt prepared, like any woman would do
thats right do-ran, just cause when ray lost he didnt quit & make excuses, that dont mean YOU got to act like a man. shit, if you woulda stukk around & got your ass KOd like a man should, you woulda had to sign up for another re-match rite away & gotten KOd again. so maybe you did right
the thirteenth proved leonard had heart,he took some shots and kept coming,,the hearns fight proved it even more,,but you can have heart and still get whipped,,,there is no shame in that, leonard will always be named as a participant of one boxing true great fights,,he was last step in cementing durans greatness,,,,only if duran would have retired,he might have been called the greatest fighter of all time, any weight any division,,after all until that time he reversed his only loss with 2 ko,s
Nothing wrong with the fight doctor's commentary. He's a solid journalist and an intelligent man. George Foreman and Al Berstein...now there's a couple of knuckleheads!
Ferdie Pacheco's ringside commentary was horrible. He came off like a total amateur. There's a reason why they moved him to color commentary. ... he sucked.
Reminds me of George Foreman as a commentator: a lot of words sometimes doesnt make sense and sometimes mentions the painfully obvious like he has somekind of revelation.
Yea tha commentators are right....this is just like tha "Thrilla Manilla" when Ali and Joe Frasier had their third fight...they was murderin eachotha..i thinks thats one of tha reasons why both of them in bad shape...cuz of that fight
watch the thirteenth,,,leonard initiates every hold,,,if leonard is such a warrior,,why is he constantly initiating holds,,like duran told howard cosell two weeks later on abc wide world of sports,,,,leonard was like a damn spider, all he wanted to do was hold,,,sugar sat there and didnt deny it,,,,no heart,,at least in montreal,,if he showed more heart and took a chance maybe he gets knocked out or knocks out duran,,,,no heart that night
you rite about one thing, Duran did talk to Cossell. It was more than 2 weeks later tho. He would talk to him after the 2nd fite also. He would admit that he had trained just as well for the re-match too. Later tho, he would change that story. & you can see when hes talking to cossell he didnt put on all that weight his fans claim, like that was a good excuse for his 'no mas'
Maybe Durans fans dont even really like duran tho. maybe they just jealous about leonard, thass all. i bet thats it. how would anyone like a boxer who quits?
bodid - we like Duran because he is human!! - unlke you who thinks twinkle toes cotton candy feather duster leonard is god! boo hoo he lost!! even fairies lose to real boxers!!sob! he should have danced all night - but he thought he would slug it out with Duran !! and what happened he broke his little slippers!leonard was and will always be a dancing queen!!
shit, i dont even care bout Ray hardly. I just hate a quitter who goes round actin like hes all tough. he needed to cheat when he fought leonard & when it didnt work out he quit! LOL, fuckkin baby.
it wasnt just ray who exposed doran, everyone did. doran didnt beat squat after he lest the lightweight class, & even in there he only beat set-ups, the only good fighters duran beat were buchannan & leonard. Ray came back & whupped him twice & he wouldnt give kenny a return shot, too chikken. he cheat in both those fights he won also, by the way
i mean tho, are all doran fanns faggots tho? just look 4 posts down under, that nastylefthook. dorans a "bronze aztec warrior and panamaian beauty ". since when do fight fans talk about fighters like that? doran fans all do that shit, & they got a problem with LEONARD?? LOL!!
bodid - i think its because Leonard is the most overratted dancer! oops - boxer! only leonard would try his "bolo" shot when he's losing - as usual trying to impress the judges with flash - as he normally does in other fights with his fast shadow slapping powder pops!(as against Hagler)- a smiling
pretty boy who dazzled the judges but couldn't punch his way out a paper bag!!
i dont give a fuck what you think to be honest, cause you dont know nothing. maybe leonard wasnt good,I dont care. but we know doran was scared enough of him to feel he needed to cheat. & when he saw that ray still wasnt goin nowhere when he cheated, doran quit. so I would say doran was over rated, but he wasnt- nobody ever rated him very high in the 1st place
bodid - has a place in world boxing hall of fame, international boxing hall of fame!! - looks like a few people rated him highly!! - you keep saying Doran! maybe you're speaking about another boxer - or maybe your just a poor uneducated sadsack who can't get "quit" out your hollow head!
bodidd- if you don't give a f*** why carry on replying!! i notice DURAN has more recognition then flip flap leonard! hey but don't worry - leonard is hosting i'm a slapper like you - tv series - i think!! in 89 got knocked down twice by hearns but drew the fight!- how many judges did he suck off to do that - he later admitted to a cocaine problem!! nice guy!! anyway he's your hero!! i don't give a f**k!lol
i dont givafukk who nominated him what. It dont change the fact that he was chikken enough to quit in front of the world to Ray. any man woulda got KOd before quitting- I bet even you would have. Many of the no class bums Duran fought in the lightweights were man enough to keep fighting. Not duran tho. I bet he only got KOd against Tommy cause he didnt have TIME to quit. LOL!
aw, did the big bad fighter have a coke problem?? did he offend poor delicate signal75? so sorry. too bad you arnt offended by quitting & cheating tho. shit too, I would rather have a drug problem than be duran. there aint no 12 step program for quitting. maybe duran should try 'faggs annonomus', 'cowards annonomus' maybe. maybe they got that for him
maybe ray couldnt bust a bag, but he could make doran quit like the chikken he was. nobody else was makin doran quit like ray did. many others whupped him bad- tommy hearns took his head off. if duran wasnt such a chikken he would have fought Ray like Tommy did
The truth hurts mowgliboy. This fite starts with Duran winning big, Ray wanted to prove he could fite flat-footed & slug too, but it aint his style & it took him a few rounds to find a groove. As the fite goes on, Ray gets stronger & Duran thinks he can get away with sittin on the lead he had built. You can see Duran is gettin nervous about how well is hangin in with this style too
& its Ray whos the interesting guy to watch in this fite, cause you can see him trying to figguer Duran out. He aint panicking, hes THINKING. His pride made him keep fighting flat-footed, but he did figgure Duran out, he KNEW hed beat him in the re-match, & it would be a cinch. If Duran would have thought about it, HE would have known it too. But he would have never brought himself to admit that. Thats why the re-match ended like it did too, cause Duran couldnt admit to himself how good Ray was
From the 5th round on in this fite tho, its pretty much Ray whos gettin stronger, & by the end he knows he made a mistake fiten flat-footed, but he has prooved he can slug it out & he also knows he can beat Duran by moving, boxing, EASY. Thats why he dont even complain about the decision one bit, cause he knows he fought the wrong fite
So you go ahead & call me what you want mogliiboy. It aint my problem that someone elses opinion offends you. It wouldnt bother you so much if you were certain I was wrong. I mean, you got plenty of people here who agree with you, how come you cant take it when one guy disagree. You gotta say 'go die' even. Fuck off, its that opinion of yous that keep me goin even
@hyenachase, Duran was head and shoulders above all lightweights. Though there were many great fighters at that wt class during that time, Duran was special.
He could've tacked on a super light wt. And jr welter wt. titles but instead went strait for the best at welterweight which was Leonard.

You;re looking at Mayweather.
Get back down to the real fight.

@joenalds And to show he is better than Mayweather, Leonard, Hagler and Hearns...Pacquaio had decided to fight Clottey and Margarito, LMAO!!
How can Pac be better than Hagler who is a middleweight, when Pac made Cotto come to 145 because 147 was too big for him?
I actually like Manny Pacquaio, unfortuantely his fans are the least knowledgable fans in history.
Midnightrambler3760 1 year ago
Duran took a terrific beating to the body in round 12. Even though he wilted badly from the beating he took, you have to give Duran credit for standing up to that type of assault.

To listen to the commentators through the fight, you might think the fight was scored 150-135 Leonard.
I admit it was close, Duran won it, but the commentators are ridiculously biased. They might as well have said "And Ray blocks ANOTHER one with his face!"
OboxerU 2 years ago
You're obviously a Duran fan, because I find their commentating favoring Duran. They talk about him hurting Leonard on arm punches that don't even land.
Then, the next round, they'll talk about Leonard favorably. They are prone to exaggeration. It's terrible announcing.
TA152H01 2 years ago
I am a fan of both fighters. I picked up more Leonard favoritism, personally.
OboxerU 1 year ago
true american comentators are so biased
anthonycotillo 1 year ago
It's interesting how you can see new things each time you watch a fight.
I never noticed how defeated Duran was after the 13th round. He was emasculated and beaten like a greasy dog.
He lost the last two rounds, badly, and then quit his next fight against Leonard. Leonard's bodywork was so much more effective than Duran's, Duran broke and yielded. He tried in the 14th though, but he was a beaten fighter. The 15th he was happy to submit to Leonard's stronger will.
TA152H01 2 years ago
What, are you living in some bizarre opposite world, TA152H01? Duran dominated the 13th and knew he'd put the fight in the bank. Broke and yielded? I suggest you watch it again but this time with your head outta' your ass.
Kedbuka 1 year ago
You're really not that ignorant, are you? Do you know anything about boxing?
In a championship fight, especially a grueling one like this that has so many different opinions, you don't give away rounds. Duran simply expired and yielded because he couldn't win the rounds, not because he wanted to give them away.
I gave round 13 to Duran, but not in a dominating way. Two judges gave it to Leonard. It was pretty close. Duran tried the 14th, but was just out manned. The 15th, he yielded.
TA152H01 1 year ago
All I need to know about you is that you rated Leonard ahead of Robinson. I'm not even going to waste any more of my time. Good day to you, genius.
Kedbuka 1 year ago
Well, you know, Leonard was a much more talented fighter than Robinson, but most people don't have an ability to think for themselves, so they just go by what other people say. Robinson is considered the best pound for pound, so the cattle don't question it.
But, if you watch him, he'd get outclassed by Leonard. He hit harder, and had a great chin, but was so much slower, had TERRIBLE defense, a bad jab, and just wasn't as athletic, or even close.
He accomplished more though.
TA152H01 1 year ago
well after 200 fights what you expect him to be at his best? besides leaonard never gave hagler a rematch cuz he knew what would happen, instead duran gave him a rematch right away
anthonycotillo 1 year ago
Hagler wasn't exactly banging down the door for a rematch, and in any rate would have been beaten even worse. Hagler never had Leonard's talent, or even approached it, and he was far past his prime that fight. Leonard knew it. Leonard was also past his prime when he fought Hagler, and his stamina was terrible.
That fight meant nothing. Both were not the same fighters as they were, and I'm glad we were spared another fight. I never liked seeing great fighters look bad, and they both did
TA152H01 1 year ago
how do you know hagler did not insist on having a re match?
anthonycotillo 1 year ago
Hagler was disgusted after the decision, and said he was done with boxing. Leonard said after the fight, when asked if there was much chance of a rematch, that there had never been any serious contact between both parties. He said he respected that Hagler was one of the few guys that walked away and never came back.
Hagler was done. He had nothing left even before his fight, and looked pitiful during it. Another fight wasn't necessary. Neither fighter was great anymore.
TA152H01 1 year ago
i woudlnt say pitiful , specially cuz most of the fight leonard just kept running away from him, cuz he knew that he would be defeated if he entered the fight exchanging punches with hagler, instead he just dance around him and ran, punching from outside, to me its not the most entertaining fighting styles with the info on the re match its hard for me tosay whats true cuz some sites said leonard refuse the re match others say hagler didnt ask for it so im still dubious on that matter
anthonycotillo 1 year ago
Leonard outpunched him when he was fresh too, because Hagler was so slow. Hagler looked really, really slow in the fight. Actually, he did the fight before against Mugabi, that's why Leonard wanted to fight him.
Hagler was done. Another fight wasn't going to change the fact he was well past his prime. So was Leonard, for that matter.
TA152H01 1 year ago
Ya know,..at 1;30, ferdie starts cryin that 'he hurt duran'!,.when in fact roberto nails leonard with 4 shots, then keeps comin, yet ferdie still says leonard has him in trouble,...hilarious. he kept comin' the whole fight,..forcing the tempo. On straight right hands, left hooks to the body alone Duran pummeled Ray. i think if Ray wasnt naturally bigger n in supreme shape he wouldda fallen at least twice in this fight. he fought his ass off too, just want meant to be.
northpoint43m 2 years ago
Leonard landed some very hard shots to Duran's body in the 12th. You can see how they hurt Duran by the way he walks back to his corner. He lost the next three rounds on the scorecards.

one of the poorest announced fights in boxing history, given the greatness of the fight. mostly pro leonard. in reality duran outhustled, out punched, and out boxed leonard--two weight classes up and a bit passed his prime while leonard was in his prime. this fight will always be a blemish on leonard's career because he was beaton beyond his usual antics and favoritism.
TheDogRibs 2 years ago 3
I'll agree they are horrible announcers, but Duran outhustling is absurd. He lost the the last three rounds on the scorecards, the last two unanimously.
I scored this fight for Leonard pretty easily, but I count clean punches a lot. Leonard landed far more. If you count groping and aggression, then you'd give Duran some rounds I gave Leonard, and score it differently.
This was not a blemish, people were amazed that Leonard fought so well fighting Duran's style. Many thought he won.
TA152H01 2 years ago
all that leonard did was grab durant thas all tahta he did could you imagin if durant waz at his prime i dont think that leonard had a chance there but leaonanrd is good i give him credit but he was grabing too much

I rate leonard better than robinson.
jrobe353 2 years ago
how can you rate leonard ahead of robinson? that is one of the dumbest comments EVER. roberto is past his prime here, he was fighting 2 weight classes higher than his prime, he beat leonard in his prime. if you look at the look on leonard's face after the fight before the decision, you can see it in his eyes, he KNOWS he was beaten.
blite13 2 years ago
Duran was spent, and beaten. He lost all the late rounds. He took so many clean shots, but, these announcers are horrible. Duran missed three big shots and they say he hurt Leonard.
Robinson wasn't really in the same class as Leonard. He didn't have much of a jab, had much slower hands, had no defense, and struggled against bums like LaMotta, who wouldn't have been a top 10 fighter in the 1970s, or 1980s. But, to sound smart, people like to say he was the best.
TA152H01 2 years ago
Leonard stated that Duran hit very hard.

His management(Don King) sold him out.

robertina duran quit because he was a coward with no balls,he could never adjust to his opponents should they switch games during fights
duran did well if he knew what you was going to do but if you changed it up a little,he was a clueless little beaner
duran was exposed in the second leonard fight as a coward and a fraud and he was also exposed as a boxer against bums like kirland laing and robbie simms
duran was an overrated insecure little bean head

Duran never got hurt in this fight!!
1288game 3 years ago
commentators were on Leonard's side. This was Duran's round. He hurt Leonard and had HIM going. Leonard was fighting on pure instinct here. Watch Duran return to his corner. Hurt? Ha!
maccka1 2 years ago 12
That is the dumbest thing anyone has said about this fight, Leonard never had the power to hurt Duran, NEVER. If anyone has been hurt in this fight, it wasn't Duran, it was Leonard, there's no question and trying to prove me wrong obviously means you are watching the wrong fight
makunouchi3 2 years ago 13
@makunouchi3 shut up.
leonard could hurt duran if he boxes and looks for the right shot
in this fight he was just tryin to prove he could go toe to toe with duran, in the rematch he took the livin piss and made him quit.
slickdon1 1 year ago
@slickdon1 you're an idiot if you think Leonard could ever hurt Duran. And if you actually watch the second fight, Duran was also never hurt. He just got too lazy to chase around Leonard the Clown. Not to mention he was outta shape for the fight in the first place. The No Mas Fight was definitely an overrated win by Leonard. In either fight you never see Duran actually rocked, but you see Leonard rocked several times, and if you don't think so, you're watching the wrong fight
makunouchi3 1 year ago
@makunouchi3 OK..to say duran wasn't hurt ever in their fights is insane. look at the last seconds of this clip. in the exchange before the bell, he did seem hurt when the crowd erupted. with that said, that is the only time i've seen him hurt in the fight.
give ray some credit, he's been getting killed in this fight to the body and he finished.
both are HALL OF FAMERS relax...... they're legends
cdotk131 1 year ago
@slickdon1 If, if, if.... obviously SRL was looking for the right shot, never landed. Remember Duran had one of the best diffence in boxing.
rickyp4ever 1 year ago
@makunouchi3 Leonard hurt Duran twice in their two fights. He hit him with a double uppercut earlier in this fight that stunned Duran for a few seconds, but nothing serious. In fight 2, he landed a bomb to the body that sounded like an M-80. After that, Duran was done, and had to quit a few rounds later. It took all the life out of him.
He wasn't hurt in the 13th, he was just taking a beating to the body and was exhausted. He wasn't stunned at all.
TA152H01 6 months ago
@makunouchi3 are you just stubborn or are you just a dumbass? respect both of the fighters for giving us such an amazing fight. these people worked so hard to come out to this fight. and i am pretty sure your just a moron because Leonards punches definitely hurt. If you ever did boxing, which i doubt, ur prob just a fatass loser sitting at home criticizing people, anyways you try not to show you are hurt. Duran dominated the fight, but in numerous cases he was hurt by Leonards punches.
JackyZProductions 5 months ago

ProudConfederateSon 3 years ago
All fighters clinch a little bit. To do it the entire fight can be a cowardly form of defense. This is a boxing match after all. But to hold the other man's head down is actually an illegal tactic. Leonard for some reason was allowed to do both ALL night long.
1288game 3 years ago
Then again not clinching is the very thing that cost Hearns to lose to Leonard the first time. So I guess my theory does hold relatively true even in this case.
ckobo84 3 years ago
Well I guess Hearns would be an exception. Definately a taller guy who didn't need to clinch.
ckobo84 3 years ago
A taller longer armed guy really has no choice but to hold when a shorter more compact guy gets in too close to him. You rarely see a shorter guy with shorter arms holding a taller guy, just how it is. If no holding was allowed Mike Tyson would have probably never lost. The only way to beat Tyson was to tie him up when he gets too close, even Lennox may not have been able to beat him without clinching. Without clinching shorter guys would rule boxing and taller guys would have little chance.
ckobo84 3 years ago
If Duran was 25 instead of almost 30 this fight would not have gone 5 rounds. Duran is so much better than Leonard ever was.Duran jumped two weight classes and beat the media darling and a lot of people lost alot of money. Leonard was never really that great.

Leonard was the one holding throughout the fight. Look at the way Padilla was stopping Leonard from clinging on. After that Ray was determined that Padilla would not get within 100 miles of one of his fights again.

BoDiddley24 3 years ago
bodid - i think its because Leonard is the most overratted dancer! oops - boxer! only leonard would try his "bolo" shot when he's losing - as usual trying to impress the judges with flash - as he normally does in other fights with his fast shadow slapping powder pops!(as against Hagler)- a smiling
pretty boy who dazzled the judges but couldn't punch his way out a paper bag!!

i dont give a fuck what you think to be honest, cause you dont know nothing. maybe leonard wasnt good,I dont care. but we know doran was scared enough of him to feel he needed to cheat. & when he saw that ray still wasnt goin nowhere when he cheated, doran quit. so I would say doran was over rated, but he wasnt- nobody ever rated him very high in the 1st place

You can see Duran is gettin nervous about how well is hangin in with this style too
benjaminBarr 4 years ago

The holding was very annoying early on, but by this point in the fight I'd forgotten it
