if you live anywhere near the conowingo dam, when there is a heavy flood condition you NEED to visit the dam, it really is somthing amazing to see and feel the thunder coming out of the river....i love the susquhanna river and will never move far from it.
TheTater1984, thanks for adding the descriptive comment, "it really is somthing amazing to see and feel the thunder coming out of the river...". I couldn't say it any better.
Thanks for the interesting info. I suspected there use to be a bridge since the dam carries US Route 1 which was the main road between Baltimore and Philly before Interstate 95 was built.
T-T i was too young to go on the catwalk but loved fishing....i promised myself when i turned 18 i would go strait to the dam to fish off of it but ever scence spetember 11 1999 they closed it ....my dreams were shatterd xD ow well ill be up there this sunday and i still got 2 years to go ^^
this was very interesting to me. I have a little river buried under my yard, which they didnt tell me about when buying the house. The water in my tunnel, eventually ends up, right there in your video.
After Hurricane Agnes in 1972, all 53 gates on the dam had to be opened to handle the surging Susquehanna River. Nonetheless, the extremely high water levels remaining on the upstream side came within 4 inches of cresting the dam.
I am a weather nut and look at the Doppler radar maps religiously so I can look forward to these hair raising days at Conowingo. Years ago they use to let you on the catwalks in front of the Dam. Now that was scary.
try having to walk across the dam !! I was coming from Harford to Cecil,I went straight into the offices at the west end and got escorted thru the building(which had a vibration) to that door near the end. Stepping out felt like stepping off a cliff,I was waiting for the impact of a truck!! the rest of the walk across wasn't fun either.
I had no idea you could walk across the dam. Sounds like you walked on the south side looking at a big drop to your right and the road to the left if you went through the offices. It appears there is only 1 or 2 feet of shoulder between the road and the edge of the dam when driving across. Must have been scary with the traffic coming from behind. But I envy you. I'm 55 and still like an adrenalin rush. And walking across the top has to be the ultimate lookout point.

I was living in Port that year. The water came over the back deck if it was 1 inch higher the bottom floor would have flooded.

I guess skinny dipping would not be advisable.

There used to be a Conowingo Bridge in 1928 before the dam opened. The bridge was blown up to make way for the dam.

I live on the North East River, just a few miles from the dam and we missed seeing this in person. Thanks for capturing this exciting event.

That sure is a lot of water. But I see nothing really scary about it.

Conowingo is scary on a GOOD day. This must have been kind of hair-raising.
