  • Hello Captain Trip, are you looking to us poor people from there up? and smiling?

  • seems to drag a bit, I know it is a slow song but the album version in this case seems less draggy (or druggy?), still love them and this tune for sure.

  • Just downright fantaboulous!!!

  • Wonderful !!!

  • I really love this song, nuff said. Also a really great set. When they were young and

    full of drive. Epic!

  • i play this so often on open acoustic nights; i love it; the spirit just takes over; love it; aso miss you Jerry!!!!!

  • Please pass the electric kool-aid. Thank you.

  • makes me happy and sad at the same time! (partly because of jerry:(:):(:)

  • 6 years ago, a friend asked me "if I was stuck on a deserted island and only had 1 album, which would I bring?" Whithout hesitation I said American Beauty.

An interesting piece of self knowledge.

  • I am going to start working on a solo to add to my version of this song.

  • guitar solo is great

  • @royalnaz1 Jerry IS GREAT! peace

  • that bird keeps attacking jerry, man.

  • JERRY2.AMEN

  • BOBBOBBYBOB.

  • Wow! Totally Amazing!!! Thanks for the post, made my night!

  • It just doesnt get better

  • Everybody looks so wrecked... and Jerry looks like Charles Manson! Funniest thing I've ever seen!

  • nice! always thought this was a radio broadcast, so glad to see the video!

  • Excellent....!

  • One of the first songs I learned on guitar. Mr. Tambourine Man's older, hazier brother.

  • just had that sync'd with comcast audio, sweet-- to bad it didn't mix into the next vid

  • Great band, great album, great song. Jerry will never truly die, the music shall live on. The Grateful Dead is American Beauty.

  • Jerry Garcia is Mr. Psychedelia. RIP.

  • love that dog howling at the end

  • Musiclly they are so sharp and crispy! I remember when they played like this back in the day! The 70s were awsome for sure! It's sad......Gone are the days....RIP Jerry.......Peace to all!

  • jerry is pure soul

  • i fuckin love this song.

  • @thebigfrenchmachine dead's baddest m-f-ing tune.

  • happy b-day jerrry

  • Dam Jerry really sounds like that guy from DARK STAR ORCHESTRA JK AKA

    (((FAKE JERRY)))

  • @mickdobbles lmao i was gonna say... but the dude from DSO is nasty.

  • BEAUTIFUL!!!

  • If i had me a shotgun id blow u straight to hell one of my favorite jerry lines EVER

  • fantastic recording. excellent vocals, harmonies....

  • Awesome recording... agree with acetoned76 below...

  • I LOVE YOU!!!

  • Dang straight! Spiritual bliss is right. This shit is what made Pete Townshend worship J. They had such a great connection. No Pete misses him as much as Keef and John together.

  • I can remeber watching this when it was broadcast. KQED broadcast a lot of great music progamming back then. Ralph Gleason's jazz program, Pete Seeger's weekly folk show, and a couple of rock/blues programs like this.

  • jerry never sounded better vocally

  • Jerry's Guitar intro on the SG is monstrous. Recorded in SF, no less. A priceless gem.

  • freakin awesome. thanks 4 post

  • ya it was relatively new.. jerry had just came out with the opening lick about a month before this, prior it was just the opening chords, great video

  • u sir, have no soul.

  • it's an old recording - like you. quit your bithcing. the dead are always good no matter.

  • If u were in SF in the 60's then I am an 8 armed man. Stupid kid... why say such nonsense?! A person that ACTUALLY followed the Dead would never talk like you do.

  • look at JG playing the Gibson SG

  • What I think makes this video even cooler is that this song was relatively new on 8/30/70 - it was only about 4-5 months old, you figure most of the people there haven't heard this song yet. Imagine hearing this song (and it's a fantastic version, btw) for the first time up close like this. Must have been the coolest thing in the world.

  • thanx man i realyy enjoyed that

  • I think that Jerry Garcia was killed and replaced in the summer of 1971 by the US government. My basic idea behind this is that the band dosed a cop or something really illegal and got caught so either the band would go to jail for life or Jerry could give himself up and allow the impostor. There's a longer theory that I can't explain here. Some lyrical proof: "I'm Uncle Sam that's who I am been hiding out in a rockn'roll band." "I would slave to learn the way to sink your ship of fools." hmmmmm

  • ya, i'm sure that happened..

  • fantastico!

  • Jerry Garcia.

    Unreal!

  • was trying to find a version of this just to listen to so i could learn the song and i came across the best version ive heard yet.

    rip captain trips

  • great song

  • nothing better on a sunny day!!!

  • Priceless.

  • The Grateful GODDAMNED Dead!

    My all time fave tune!

RIP Jerry and thanks for everything!

  • Wow listen to his voice, he so totally lost his voice later on . . . .

  • Garcia w /the SG w/ the sticker that said

    I AM AN AMERICAN.

  • a very sweet reading of this song, hot on the heels of the american beauty release
