Finnaly a real great lakes type diaphone, the famous two tone that most people think of when they think fog horn rooooooo ruuuuut, they should keep the real one in use they dont have many real diaphones left anywhere in the world.
when I sailed the great lakes during the 60s & early 70s-I used to pray that on our downbound trip it would be foggy around Whitefish Point. Just so I can hear that low-toned, grutteral diaphone foghorn. I also remember our several runs to Duluth, Minnesota & had the pleasure to hear the foghorn there at the harbor entrance. Just an absolutely wonderful sound! A shame that it's no longer in use. -The Mariner
A very freaky coincidence, I was looking at foghorns on YT, then turned on Malcom In The Middle on TV, and his dad has an RC boat with a foghorn on it! Very wierd!
Very nice footage & recording of the fake fog at WP. That fake fog horn sounds like a sick cow compared to the original fog horn - it was so loud that it felt like it was knocking you out of your socks. When the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society thought it was too loud for the tourists, they got the Coast Guard to disable it. As your footage shows, they don't even bother with historical accuracy, as they run it for ambience when there are enough tourists around & not when it is foggy.
The tower has been open for climbing since mid 2011!

My wife and I were there this summer, and the fog horn was operating. It was a clear day, but windy. Maybe it was a exercise.
