this is PERFECT!!!! If you revise it you MUST leave this on! My eight year old loves it! This one of those things, its perfect and cannot be improved!!!! Thank you!!
This video and song bring back fantastic memories. My dad and I use to take the Panama Limited to and from New Orleans to Chicago. When the end of the train is shown from the inside I can remember standing by the windows watching the country side pass by. What great memories these are.
The old America, I remember going to school taking a short cut through the train yard with my brother in Chilton, Wi. The smell of old grease, stepping over lots of tracks, workmen loading and unloading, trains switching tracks, the noises and sounds and smells. So long ago, but I still remember. Some things are lost to this new world that we'll never have back again. The great metal beast blasting into the station and gently stopping, snorting like a bull. So long ago, but I remember.
@pjgumby: My elementary school was near a train yard as well... and the tracks ran right behind the school... a block away. (Waterloo, IA - Chicago Central Line and Union Pacific, I believe.) Love the smells and sounds... miss them dearly to this day!
@raser1994 Very well, and how are you? We love our trains here or what's left of them. Grew up with them and even in the 1960's were very much needed and depended upon. I am up here in Alaska now, and they are a vital part of moving goods between villages. But I do miss the old days, I doubt anymore a couple of school kids would be allowed to cut through a train yard to get to school. I understand that trains are very much of Europe's history, and are vital as well, good for you, keep riding!
Replying to scotnick59, yes it makes me choke everytime I hear this song. My grandpa was an engineer on the Green Diamond and my dad worked for Illinois Central on the electric lines in Chicago. had an uncle who was an engineer on the Idiana Harbor Belt. Thats why this song means so much to me.
"Good mornin' America how are ya? Said don't you know me, i'm your native son"... talking of the Vietnam Vets who were treated so horribly ..they deserve respect like any war veteran!
This is such a wistful song i love it and Vietnam vets and New Orleans...
This song was not written by Arlo. After a show a fan who wrote this song wanted to play it for Arlo. Arlo said you buy me a beer and I'll listen to you and your song until the beer is gone. The rest is history.
I want to thank you for this video. It reminds me of a friend that suffers from Huntington's Disease just as Arlo's father Woody Guthrie did. His favorite transportation is trains and he is in love with your video as well as this song. Thank you for making this video. Its brought such joy to my friend's life and means so very much to him.
My parents talked about the good old days of the 40.s and 50's and I was a teenager in the good old days of the 70's ,...somehow I find it hard to imagine today, as bad as things are, will one day be looked back on and seen as the good old days by my grandchildren.

@juneshopper =I wish you could. It's been gone a long time. I road from Chicago to New Orleans in the spring of 1945. I was 5, and going to meet my Dad. His ship was coming back to port. WW-2 Navy. I vividly remember the Brown and Orange train cars. We had what was called a compartment. Your own very small room. A big thrill for a small boy.
During Katrina, one of the new outlets (CNN??) posted this song juxtaposed with images of New Orleans, its residents, and the devastation. It was unbelievably moving.
I've loved this song since I was a teen. I sure wish I could find which news agency did that montage. It was hauntingly beautiful set to this wonderful song.

I love the video and the sounds with it!! Its a ballad about a real train and a real audio experience for those who haven't had the true experience to "feel" it except by hearing. VERY WELL DONE!!! Keep it.

You've done a beautiful job with this video. I agree that the train sounds are perhaps a bit stronger than they should be, but I love it anyway. Great video for a great song. Thanks very much!
The song "City of New Orleans" was written by Steve Goodman, who approached Arlo Guthrie in a bar saying "I want to sing you a song I wrote" and, as the story goes, Arlo wouldn't listen to it until Steve Goodman bought him a beer. Arlo made, in my opinon, the definitive cover to the song, which gave Arlo his first real top 40 hit, and brought financial security to Steve Goodman. The two remained close friends until Goodman's death from Lukemia in 1984.
@ledder68 - Hello. Just for fun, I wanted to see if you know the name of the Old Towne bar where the famous meeting took place. My friends and I were frequent visitors to Old Towne in the 70's. I saw Steven Goodman perform this song at Ravinia around 1973. (RIP Steve and Thank You for this fantastic tune.) So, what's the bar's name? I'll wait to hear. Thank you.
Hey. Actually, yes and no. I knew I had seen it somewhere.. but I thought the name was "White Knight". I cheated: I googled it, and saw the name "Quiet Knight" on the Wikipedia article about Steve Goodman. (I think that's where I did see it the first time.. but, I couldn't remember the name.) That's great that you got to see Steve Goodman live. I saw Arlo once in 1983: it was a small playhouse so we were sitting really close, but I would love to see him again.
@ledder68 - Hello. I'm a bit envious that you got to see Arlo in person. I may still get the chance to see him once while you may be able to hear his show again. Good luck to both of us in that regard. And, as always, PEACE & LOVE, BREAD & JUSTICE FOR ALL.
@lostbutfoundtreasure What the hell dude, the rails still live, they are the veins of america that keep are resources moving, i hoppe to become a railroad conductor if not a railyard master at that. Taking a train is much safer than taking a plane now a days.
Thank you for posting. I'm from Illinois and often rode the rails both within in and out of the state. I also saw author Steve Goodman perform this live at the Ravinia Band Shell. Arlo Guthrie's version perfectly captures the mellow mood of train travel (which has NOT, fortunately, disappeared). I'm now married to a "Trainiac" who skips planes for trains whenever possible. I like the images here. Good job. Best Wishes to you.
... hope we will arrive well in Hung Hom St., after our longtrip Berlin - Irkutsk - Ulaan Bataar - Beijing, maybe a little bit longer than Chicago - BigEasy (-;
by the way: THIS IS THE BEST RAILWAYVIDEO on youTube!!! thanx for posting
The first song I learned to play on guitar without using sheet music or tab. I was just tooling around on the 6 string one night and said to myself "this sure sounds a lot like City of New Orleans". Threw on a capo and it was an exact match. Excellent song, an all time classic.
Road this train and is shown much as I remember as a 5 year old going to see my Dad who was transfering to another US Navy ship near New Orleans. Got on in Illinois. Thanks for showing this.
Give some thought to changing this....it's TRAIN SONG for crying out loud. The sound effects make it unique. There are many other places the original version of this song can be downloaded. Great job.
I once lived in New Orleans and was heartbroken by the damage Hurricane Katrina inflicted upon the city. This song reminds me of better days in a truly unique city.
well the song does have to do with a train so having train sounds does make sense.... an audience clapping, screaming, yelling, cheering, whistling, hooting, and hollering is more annoying that a few train sounds.
@NCStL576 Screw that!!! I like the powerful locomotive sounds. My Logitech 2300 system pounds my neighborhood with these sounds. If they don't like this they can go watch the original. I like this, don't take it away. Stick to your guns man, what's wrong with you?? Retired Combat Sergeant...
@NCStL576 ...By the way...call me stupid...but didn't the great Arlo sing this beautiful song about...oh...I dunno...Powerful Locomotives?? Is it that surprising that this song should have powerful locomotive sounds to go with it?? You take this off of here as is and you lose me for a customer...Ol Sarge...
@NCStL576 - Appreciate your posting this. My "rail fan" aka "trainiac" husband & I love it, with or without the sound effects. It's very soothing & brings back great memories of the bustling Chicago train yards & wonderful trips to various places "riding the rails" over the years. Chicagoan Steve Goodman's lyrical prediction of trains "disappearing" have turned out, thankfully, not to be true. RIP Steve and THANK YOU NCStL576 for posting. Best Wishes to you!
@NCStL576 Dude, I kinda like it. I used to watch freight trains come past from Houston on the way to Galveston and now I'm back in UK I love the sounds. Cheers, mate.
@NCStL576 You don't have to make excuses for this to anyone. Freedom of expression, whatever your expression is. Take it if you like it, leave it if you don't. franc2000, shut the hell up. Whiny baby.
I have been looking for a version of this to listen to, and actually, if you listen to the audio of this alone, the train sound effect mixed in gives you goosebumps. It's just what I was looking for. :) It is folksy, Americana, train lover at it's best.

Listen, I am a toy train collector and this song along with the sound effects is what this is all about. You can't do a better video cause you cannot improve on perfection. If someone doesn't lke it, let them make their own. You did a great job!!
@franc2000 Leave the sound effects. They make the video unique and give it a RR feel. Me thinks the folks who want it changed are not railfans. Those E8's idling fit in perfectly.
@ilovealaska There is nothing wrong with shedding a tear, even Rocky Balboa shed a tear, mind you in Rocky 3 he lost Mikey; his father figure, his world title belt, then found out his fights were rigged. That's a lot of shit to deal with, who wouldn't cry?
Im glad to hear you are keeping this version on YouTube.

Hey man, it's your video. That whistle grabbed me good. It is an added element. That's saying a lot, considering Arlo was perfect to begin.

You've done a beautiful job with this video. I agree that the train sounds are perhaps a bit stronger than they should be, but I love it anyway. Great video for a great song. Thanks very much!

Great video.
The two remained close friends until Goodman's death from Lukemia in 1984.
ledder68 8 months ago
@ledder68 - Hello. Just for fun, I wanted to see if you know the name of the Old Towne bar where the famous meeting took place. My friends and I were frequent visitors to Old Towne in the 70's. I saw Steven Goodman perform this song at Ravinia around 1973. (RIP Steve and Thank You for this fantastic tune.) So, what's the bar's name? I'll wait to hear. Thank you.

@mjcamck71
I saw Arlo once in 1983: it was a small playhouse so we were sitting really close, but I would love to see him again.
ledder68 7 months ago
@ledder68 - Hello. I'm a bit envious that you got to see Arlo in person. I may still get the chance to see him once while you may be able to hear his show again. Good luck to both of us in that regard. And, as always, PEACE & LOVE, BREAD & JUSTICE FOR ALL.

@lostbutfoundtreasure What the hell dude, the rails still live, they are the veins of america that keep are resources moving, i hoppe to become a railroad conductor if not a railyard master at that. Taking a train is much safer than taking a plane now a days.
PsiTerrorPrime 4 months ago
Thank you for posting. I'm from Illinois and often rode the rails both within in and out of the state. I also saw author Steve Goodman perform this live at the Ravinia Band Shell. Arlo Guthrie's version perfectly captures the mellow mood of train travel (which has NOT, fortunately, disappeared). I'm now married to a "Trainiac" who skips planes for trains whenever possible. I like the images here. Good job. Best Wishes to you.

The first song I learned to play on guitar without using sheet music or tab. I was just tooling around on the 6 string one night and said to myself "this sure sounds a lot like City of New Orleans". Threw on a capo and it was an exact match. Excellent song, an all time classic.

This song reminds me of better days in a truly unique city.

flvince 10 months ago
well the song does have to do with a train so having train sounds does make sense.... an audience clapping, screaming, yelling, cheering, whistling, hooting, and hollering is more annoying that a few train sounds.

Why the fudge juice would you put horrific sound effects over a lovely tune, seriously, why would you do that? What's wrong with you?

@NCStL576 Screw that!!! I like the powerful locomotive sounds. My Logitech 2300 system pounds my neighborhood with these sounds. If they don't like this they can go watch the original. I like this, don't take it away. Stick to your guns man, what's wrong with you?? Retired Combat Sergeant...
mundrubjet 9 months ago
@NCStL576 ...By the way...call me stupid...but didn't the great Arlo sing this beautiful song about...oh...I dunno...Powerful Locomotives?? Is it that surprising that this song should have powerful locomotive sounds to go with it?? You take this off of here as is and you lose me for a customer...Ol Sarge...
mundrubjet 9 months ago
@NCStL576 - Appreciate your posting this. My "rail fan" aka "trainiac" husband & I love it, with or without the sound effects. It's very soothing & brings back great memories of the bustling Chicago train yards & wonderful trips to various places "riding the rails" over the years. Chicagoan Steve Goodman's lyrical prediction of trains "disappearing" have turned out, thankfully, not to be true. RIP Steve and THANK YOU NCStL576 for posting. Best Wishes to you!

@NCStL576 I liked the rumbling sound effects. It gave a sense of what the song was about and worked with the animation.

@franc2000 Leave the sound effects. They make the video unique and give it a RR feel. Me thinks the folks who want it changed are not railfans. Those E8's idling fit in perfectly.
