What happened to the high horns? This is well played, but this interpretation loses ugency and tension. This piece should climax, and it just limps into the end line. What a waste of a great woodwind section.

As a clarinet player, it's a touch difficult to admit that Version B is nicer.  But mixing the different tones is richer than the clarinet quartet. In Version A, the voices are too similar to where I will follow a theme in my head and switch between staffs.

First of all, I really have to disagree with all of the ignorant motherfuckers who insist that this is the superior version of this movement. The clarinet quartet in version A is a work of transcendent genius.

Also, the soprano saxophone is God's new pox on man. Like the followers of Mose, the Jews and their international conspiracy have conspired to bring that monstrosity to the doorsteps of us good and respectable christian musicians. I must morally object to any piece which features it.

@wab2113 Might I say that you're as ignorant as you call those who like this? You may not like the soprano sax but you cannot deny that both versions of this movement are amazing. This is the way Grainger wanted it, and like it or not, this is the version most bands play simply because most band directors want to stay true to Grainger's wishes.

Personally, I prefer the version with the Eb clarinet, but I'm not going around insulting the opinions of others.
