I keep seeing people saying in the comments that is either Alan Menken singing or is Paul Kendel without is Clopin accent....this sound exactly like Clopin to me, what do you mean without Clopin's accent?
I love this song, even if it wouldn't fit into movie. This song corespondes to book in which clopin dropped a vase and when it broke into 7 pieces it was seatled that Esmeralda's and Greguare's (the poet in orginal novel) will last 7 years.
The directors are right, it would not make sense in the movie, but it's still a lovely song none the less. Oh, how I wish I could hear Paul Kandel sing this. It sounds funny hearing Alan Menkin trying to imitate his voice. O_o
i usually come down on the side of "aww, poor little song it woulda worked"....yeah not this time. it breaks the flow of the scene. the gypsies are preparing to leave cause of Frolo and to stop and have a wedding song and dance, yeah no.
Lovely song, but it totally hinders the progress of the story! getting on with Frollo's coming and capturing the gypsies after the trail made the storyline much smoother then introducing a whole 'nother concept!
When you think about it; if the directors though diffrently of this song, It would've been In the movie, and "A Guy Like You" would be the deleted scene we're watching!
@Filmzie Well i wouldn't say its a Stupid song, it does give Quasimotto's acceptance to Phebus and Esmarelda's relationship more prominance, but that's prettymuch all it does. if they deleted that, they'd have to delete the "Heaven's Light"reprise that comes after it.
But if it were deleted, we;d be nodding our heads going "oh yeah, it makes sense they deleted it, it's confusing"
The Only reason it makes sense to cut it from the movie is because thier supposed to get out of the Court of Miracles before Frollo comes. taking time to celebrate a wedding?... not a wise move. Frollo wouldn't just sit there and let a Gipsy wedding be carried out.
They Need to recycle this song for another movie! One where it Fits better! They Need to! It's too good to be left unheard!
@Tartubeman Because everything about the Hunchback 2 was stupid, not a single smart move was made. Putting this song in the second movie would have been clever and appropriate. Ergo, it didn't happen.
The Only reason it made sense to cut this was that they were supposed to Evacuate before Frollo comes. and i doubt Frollo would take the time to wait out a Gipsy wedding.
They need to recycle this song into another movie, As Soon as they find a story that fits! they Have to! it's too beautiful to be left unheard!
Why isnt this song in Huncback 2? (other than because it's crap?)
@CarolinePar umm I'm afraid that in the original story frolo kills her. It's all really dark and Phoebus is a minor character who doesn't really get involved.
I have yet to come across a film or stage adaptation that is absolutely faithful to the book. I have seen some bad versions, some good versions, and some versions I wish I could un-see...but I would never go so far as to totally discredit an adaptation because it "isn't the book". The way I see it, any modern adaptation that puts a classic back in the limelight is not a heresy, more like a gateway.
I happen to be a huge fan of Hugo..but seriously some folks need to lighten up around here.

I agree. The book is better, and how DARE they... Disney just killed the book. :( At least Tony Jay played Frollo's voice and he died in a similar way, but they absolutely destroyed the plot and some characters.
Well they couldn't have possibly used the original plot for a children's movie. :/ This is personally my favorite Disney movie and I think they came up with a nice way to adapt the same theme of the story into this movie. They were inspired. They didn't want to take the exact same idea from Victor Hugo and just draw it.
And you are entitled to your own opinion. I understand some people still prefer the original book, because the book is great in itself.
Oh lord, "indignant on his behalf"?? You don't know how he would feel about it any better than any other living person.
And yes, I have read the book. When the movie came out, my middle school English teachers took the opportunity of widespread interest in the story to assign the book to our grade levels. Faithful or not, movie adaptations renew the relevancy of old classics in popular culture and make them more accessible to new generations.
First of all, I'd like to think that I do know at least a little bit about how he'd feel given that he based Esmeralda on Adele and Frollo, whether he intended it or not, is very similar to Victor during his courtship of Adele. And since you're so stubbornly telling me to get over myself, I'll let you know that I refuse to do so. Why should I? Why should anyone? We're amazing. Modesty and humility bring us down vibrationally, so screw that. I can defend someone I love if I so choose.
"I wanted to paint a young girl who should realize the ideal of all my fresh and poetic imaginings... pure, proud, angelical- it was yourself, my beloved Adele, whom I wished to paint." I'm pretty positive all such characters of his (Esmeralda, Dea, etc) are based on Adele. So if nothing else, he'd be upset about Esmeralda being so seductive.
I don't consider it pompous. If you believe something, you should be passionate about it. But thanks for attempting to improve the way I come across. ^_^
That is an interesting and lovely quote. I'd still hope Mr. Hugo would appreciate that great works of art and literature are destined to be reinterpreted and revived throughout the centuries, with the fingerprints of new artists and writers showing their hands in his work. But who knows.
True. ^_^ Still, I wish there was at least one accurate movie. I've watched all the English versions I can find and Notre Dame de Paris, which is the most accurate version thus far, and so many don't do Victor Justice. The silent film was the worst, though.
Visually it's so clever! The hellfire backdrop paying a little homage perhaps to the original fate of the two XD And like everyone else, I've got a fever and the only cure is more Clopin!
Beautiful song, but it takes too much away from the story and why Quasi and Phoebus even went to the Court of Miracles in the first place. It'd be like, this scene, and then, "Oh, by the way, Frollo's coming guys, we better escape." I love it though, anything to give Clopin more singing time... but Paul Kandel isn't singing here, its Alan Menken, so I guess its a good thing Paul Kandel didn't waste his beautiful voice for nothing.
btw, i luv ur "oh, by the way, Frollo's coming guys, we better escape." lmao everyone goes from happy wedding to rushed panic... clopin: you coodnt tell us this BEFORE u joined hands?! lol
I know what you mean! I'd give ANYTHING to see CLopin get mroe screentime! and this would've been PERFECT for him! but it doesn't fit the rest of the film!*sobs*
I love Clopin but I don't like how much of a mechanism for good he is here. I prefer him being morally ambiguous.

What is he? Sebastian?
I'm finding that a lot of the cut song seem reminiscent of earlier Disney movies.
