  • Hi Slice just one last thing if I am able to release the club with the left arm drill and practice that mainly and feel connected that should help the feeling? It seems when I put the right hand on later and do the 9-3 my right hand hinders release, probably too many years as a flipper lol. Also I have been watching some of Dan Whittaker's videos he seems to mention you a lot did he learn under yourself. Thanks again!

  • @meansswing

Yep, I've mentored Dan and he's been a protege of mine for several years now... :)

Honestly, I need to see some footage so as to SEE what's actually going on. Otherwise I'm more or less firing bullets into the night... ;) Ordinarily you can do both drills separately and then it becomes a fairly simple process to tie the two together. Try it hitting very short pitches, virtual chips, and it will be easier to tie them together and add some speed/distance.

  • Thanks slice we got some snow here now in Wa. so I will have to do some swing in garage. Sounds like you had a abnormal winter as well. I will continue to work on left arm release and when the weather gets better send in a video. I have been watching footage of Hogan and your students and it seems at impact the left shoulder raises, and appears to help the club go low and left is this correct? Thanks

  • @meansswing

Email me if you would... :)

  • Thanks sounds like what I am looking for slice.

  • @meansswing

Good deal! Hoped it would be... .:)

  • I have always been a flipper of the club and have recently worked on the 9-3 and not releasing the right hand. I am able to hit it well with the trailing arm drill and pivot correctly and hit a sand wedge about 40-50 yards. However on the 9-3 drill I find it hard to fell the proper release of the left arm? Like it does not fold properly is there any drill to ingrain this? Thanks

  • @meansswing

Sure.....stick a wash rag/glove/piece of Nerf material in your left armPIT.....then make a swing with just the the left arm focusing on the feeling of the upper left arm being connected to the upper chest/pectoral as it's PULLED AROUND by the pivot.....when this happens the mass of the clubhead will accelerate past the butt of the club and the left wrist will hinge/cup and the left arm will fold.....that's the "feeling" of a proper release.....hope that helps......

  • A couple tips that wil help you with this. Passively feel the pressure in the right forefinger. When you flip or throw it away, that pressure leaves. In fact, hit them with the right thumb off, and the right forefinger pointing straight, Maintain the pressure from the shaft on the first section of the forefinger which is still in contact with the club. The trick is keeping the right arm passive, keeping the forefinger pressure with the pivot (no stall), and keeping in synch. (right elbow & hip)

    Yep, good stuff JJ... :)

  • forgot to ask about ball position. center? back? and how far should i attempt to hit the shots w the trail arm only drill. thanks for your help.

  • well, it all depends on how much weight is "set"/distributed on the lead leg/forward leg/pivot point......as a rule weight is set fairly "heavily" into/over the lead leg which would then place your center very much on top of the ball with the low point well forward of the ball......from there it's totally dependent upon the individual as to whether they move the ball back in order to create a bit more of a downward/compressed strike/impact...

  • nice video. quick question, on the trailing arm drill what club should i use to practice with.

really working hard on ur methods and trying to ingrain the right pivot to really compress the ball. working on the 9 -3 drill as well.

p.s. i guess my pivot is off since contact feels wierd n shots are not good, but when they are good , they are really good : )

  • @jam24poj

Primarily LW/SW/PW, although I got pretty good with a 7 iron at one time. It's like any drill IMOP, start with the wedges and work your way to longer clubs. Glad something I've written has helped ya' a bit! Keep up the work as it'll pay off over the long haul... :)

  • Should this drill also be done with just the left hand?

Are there advantages to using just the right hand?

    Thanks,

  • @RollYourRock

Yes, you MUST use the trailing arm and PIVOT TOGETHER or you can't hit it consistently....if at all. "Flippers" can't hit it at all.... :)

I also advocate hitting them with just the lead arm, especially if your trying to develop a "long right arm" as so many are today. However, it's not nearly as important as hitting them with the trailing arm IMOP.
