I was with about 150 deaf people about 8 interpreters(some other hearing people too) at a special Church function for the deaf on that Sunday night! The show started with a deaf man signing songs about praising God in the storms of life! Lights dimmed- we thought it was part of his show! (We politely had all pagers/phones and even the radio in the kitchen(W/hearing working back there-turned off! Knew NOTHING abt TORNADO.!!!!
(Cont) A cop knocked and asked if anyone was from la Plata- because the whole town was gone!! (None of our cars had a dent form that huge hail! Cars to left and right parking lots had damage- none in that churches parking lot had damage! We turned the radio on and the 'terps took turns- getting on stage and interp'g radio reports so the deaf knew which roads were closed and what to expect. We were all blessed- at that time there was NO emergency contact system for the deaf! All the terps/...
(cont) we were all at the right place at the right time! we later found out that 4 deaf people were probably saved because they were with us and not at home- without warning! I saw a huge black storm cloud wall before the show...and was amazed but wasn't sure it was a tornado!(Looked like ONE cloud- stole all the others and it was totally black- i guess from debris!
@MissKuriosity Katrina? Katrina was in 2005 + was a Hurricane. Adding to that, it was in Louisiana. I remember when I was In Leonardtown when this happened.
was this taken in quailwood ? i was 4 when this happend , my friend was 5 that day , she was at the mcdonalds across the street from arbys and the new ritas
I used to live in Quailwood when I was little. I remember this tornado and my grandmother was at the walmart on 301 and saw the cvs down the road get ripped to shreds.
for some reason I'll never know, for the 1st time I took 488 to go north to work instead of driving straight into the tornado. Still got hailed on in my car (gosh it was LOUD) but someone was sitting on my shoulder that day. RIP Mr. Hammonds who passed away in his truck during the tornado. Thx for youtubing the video.
this is the most frightening tornado video I have ever seen. Maybe its the music, or maybe the sense of dread that you can feel when this F-5 is coming.
@GOODY61 This was tearing up the houses in and across from Clarks Run when it was filmed. Tell THEM it wasn't an F4. GOODY thinks he's some sort of expert, lol.
@typyclsytuation Not an expert but I am interested in the subject and watch a lot of tornado videos for comparison. My position is the tornado as it appears in this video was not at F4 strength. Tornados can develop strength rapidly in less than a minute but I do not see strong rotation in this video. No doubt this tornado was rated F4 strength at some point during it's cycle and fatalties did occur.
this is the most frightening tornado video I have ever seen. Maybe its the music, or maybe the sense of dread that you can feel when this F-5 is coming.
it doesnt even look like its doing anything but I lived in Bowie at that time and I was freakin that it was a F5 tornado that close to home. I realize that some people lost that their lives during this storm. You all were very lucky. Cool video
I remember going to MIR the Friday after it all happened and the whole town was just torn apart. The church and high school was just demolished. Insane to see the damage it did.
I remember this i was at the la plata fair when this happend we had to leave fast we took shelter in a mcdonalds but didnt get hit were away from the tornado XD
i remember that shit. i live in Indian Head. tornado started across the mattawoman river in the marbury area. leveled in a section of the roof at lackey high school. school was cancelled for 2 days. heard LPHS was way worse.
Strange how it doesn't really look all that violent. Most videos you see of F4s and F5s, you KNOW its an F4-F5.
And this monster happened only a few months after the College Park tornado. I know the mid-atlantic isn't immune to tornadoes, but to get two violent ones like that is rare....
That morning i parked my car at cvs and went golfing down at wicomoco shores, we never knew there was a storm until we came back to laplata and my car was totally crushed by the safeway sign on 301 and my mother n law was in line at the bank and the drive thru collapsed on her. The footage of my car made it on national news with the man Tom Brokaw
because it was strong. it was an f5 tornado. 6 people died. ans school was tore down. houses were destroyed. building were demolished. my mother's boos's house was tore in half.
This was actually an F4. But I was referring to the fact that people presume that they can determine a tornado's strength with just a quick glance. I've seen people who, just from a quick glance, think it was an F1.
My daughter and I live in La Plata and were shopping when the tornado hit. I "twist" of fate saved us. We were shopping for a birthday card and while at a red light were debating between going to CVS or the then new Wal-Mart; both in La Plata. We decided to try the Wal-Mart. i remember that day aswell.... for anyone that lives down that way i was gong down turkey hill rd when all of a sudden hail teh size of baseballs were hitting my car.the rain was so hard it was like a firehose was hitting it. then this erie fog rolled in. scary shit!!!
I live in Harford County and I remember that day I was almost 7 years old and we were under a tornado watch and I freaked out. Then we found out about this tornado.
I remember this storm. I was at work at the time (I worked at 6 flags) and they had told us to take cover because a tornado touched down in La Plata. It scared the hell out of me.
As a Stormchaser for Maumee.. I'm aware of the Fujita scale formed by Professer Ted Fujita.. I was amzzed to see that it was an F4.. thank the gods it wasn't an F5 when you filmed other wise it would been a panic
How ever that almost looks like a f-2 to f3 tornaday, more even within the f1.. at first I thought it was a Microburst, but more into the video it was a tornado.. Nice
Well as I'm sure you know the Fujita Scale is based on damage caused and if you could see the town you would agree it was an F4. In fact, it was initially claasified as an F5 and later DOWNGRADED to an F4.
I know it doesn't look very menacing in the video but while I was shooting this video it was tearing up a neighboorhood beyond those woods, leveling several of the homes.
They all had a few dings but nothing major. The 4Runner was the worst off.
The car under the cover is a `69 Firebird convertible. Afterwards we pulled hail from off the front seat. It had penetrated the car cover and convertible top!
I remember when this happened...laplata got messed up it took quite a while for the recovery process. I like how in the video theyre having a casual conversation about what wax they use lol
I always thought Maryland was too deep down (valley like) to get tornadoes but lately I find myself running to the basement just incase lol I live in PG, we had a tornadoe last yr in the Cheverly area.
I lived in MD at the time i was going to milton sommers, like two windows were broken, and like three years later you could still see the exact path of the tornado. It was crazy. We had pieces of hail for forever.
i live in kings grant and i was ike 10 when tyhis happpened it was so crazy my whole family was freaking out but at least i got out of skool for like a week. haha
They were okay, for the most part, some hail damage. I know it's not pretty but under that car cover is a 1969 Firebird Convertible. After I put the camera down we opened the door and pulled out a few pieces of hair that went through the cover AND the convertible top!
that tornado hit hoopersisland where i live..it was bout 5 mins from my house...it tore apart one house...nothin left of it but the toilet...thats it...an it was rated an f4
I'm glad there are more people like you here to teach ignorant people like 9secondsflat, what tornadoes are like. This was a great vid, I've been looking for a different vid of the la plata tornado. That hail was impressive! I live north around frederick and I've never seen hail that large around here before. I image it left a few dents in somethings.

I was driving out to the beach that day, and idiot that I am I wasn't listening to the radio...just CDs and my iPod. I got to the Bay Bridge I found that the gates were up and they weren't collecting tolls. I just thought, "sweet!" and kept going. I had no idea it was because the booths had been evacuated. D'oh!
my anut lives in quailwood and her house is on a hill. the neighbors around her got their houses trampled over and her's was barely scraped. i live in charlotte hall and that day all i see is a big ass black cloud floating over hugesville. my aunt has like a whole freezer full of the hail that fell. it tasted good with some snow cone syrup on it.
I live in Lexington Park,I remember this.Alot of tornadoes come close to Lp but thank god they never actually get here.Except for that one in 2005 or somethin.
We live near Tornado Alley now. They keep saying I'll know when I hear one because they sound like a train, problem is we live 2 blocks from the train tracks. I just wait for the tornado to blow the horn & I know not to run. lol
I thought it just sounded like a constant rolling thunder. And I would think that if you were hearing something that sounds like a train yet wasn't an actual train, that it's too late - that thing's right on top of you!
You just have to understand how laid back we are in Md. We lived in Federalsburg at the time & my husband was running around the yard catching bingo papers, tar paper from roofs ect. before the rain even started there. Days later we even found part of a bank deposit slip from County First Bank in Laplata just laying in the yard. The men are right "Watcha gonna do about it?"
That's what they offered and I didn't know how much I should ask for! This was just one story for a day or two for them so I figure they probably don't pay out TOO much for something like this. Oh well!
I was on N. Wiltshire Court on King's Grant; 488 is on the other side of the fence seen when the hail started coming down while the dogs were playing around.
Here's an F4 tornado passing nearby, and the guy is talking about a new kind of wax on his car (which gets whacked by the very predictable large hail that accompanies tornadoes.) If you need a demonstration of what constitutes "typical guy behavior", here it is.
thats a pretty graceful tornado... doesnt look like its doing too much damage except to earth... and the poor buildings that went up in the first few seconds. That was some naaasty hail though...

We live near Tornado Alley now. They keep saying I'll know when I hear one because they sound like a train, problem is we live 2 blocks from the train tracks. I just wait for the tornado to blow the horn & I know not to run. lol
celticmama74 4 years ago
I thought it just sounded like a constant rolling thunder. And I would think that if you were hearing something that sounds like a train yet wasn't an actual train, that it's too late - that thing's right on top of you!

You just have to understand how laid back we are in Md. We lived in Federalsburg at the time & my husband was running around the yard catching bingo papers, tar paper from roofs ect. before the rain even started there. Days later we even found part of a bank deposit slip from County First Bank in Laplata just laying in the yard. The men are right "Watcha gonna do about it?"
celticmama74 4 years ago
Nuthin' you CAN do! Haha

AceFighter10 4 years ago
That's what they offered and I didn't know how much I should ask for! This was just one story for a day or two for them so I figure they probably don't pay out TOO much for something like this. Oh well!

We were driving down Hawthorn Rd when it went through Qualewood. Where was the guy standing when he took this video?

Right on! Great to catch the tornado and the hail on the same video.

this thing tore apart my neighborhood and it was tight
zachizolman 4 years ago
It was 25 miles south of DC, I guess that counts as "almost". The one that killed those two sisters in College Park was closer.
typyclsytuation 5 years ago
i would be driving right along side the twister
tornadomad 5 years ago
thats a pretty graceful tornado... doesnt look like its doing too much damage except to earth... and the poor buildings that went up in the first few seconds. That was some naaasty hail though...
TroySundt 5 years ago
believe it or not that was infact an F5
tornadomad 5 years ago
Actually it was downgraded to an F4.
typyclsytuation 5 years ago
... and it almost hit D.C.
