  • I was with about 150 deaf people about 8 interpreters(some other hearing people too) at a special Church function for the deaf on that Sunday night! The show started with a deaf man signing songs about praising God in the storms of life! Lights dimmed- we thought it was part of his show! (We politely had all pagers/phones and even the radio in the kitchen(W/hearing working back there-turned off! Knew NOTHING abt TORNADO.!!!!

  • (Cont) A cop knocked and asked if anyone was from la Plata- because the whole town was gone!! (None of our cars had a dent form that huge hail! Cars to left and right parking lots had damage- none in that churches parking lot had damage! We turned the radio on and the 'terps took turns- getting on stage and interp'g radio reports so the deaf knew which roads were closed and what to expect. We were all blessed- at that time there was NO emergency contact system for the deaf! All the terps/...

  • (cont) we were all at the right place at the right time! we later found out that 4 deaf people were probably saved because they were with us and not at home- without warning! I saw a huge black storm cloud wall before the show...and was amazed but wasn't sure it was a tornado!(Looked like ONE cloud- stole all the others and it was totally black- i guess from debris!

  • Tornado? [Yawn]

Hey, is that NuFinish on your car?!?!

  • i was about 6 when this happened, i lived on kalmia court when this happened

  • @MissKuriosity Katrina? Katrina was in 2005 + was a Hurricane. Adding to that, it was in Louisiana. I remember when I was In Leonardtown when this happened.

  • Just wanna say i turned 4 that day .

  • was this taken in quailwood ? i was 4 when this happend , my friend was 5 that day , she was at the mcdonalds across the street from arbys and the new ritas

  • @xlovekr King's Grant...

  • Quialwood?

  • @202john115 King's Grant...

  • nice catch. cant believe there where some yesterday

  • I used to live in Quailwood when I was little. I remember this tornado and my grandmother was at the walmart on 301 and saw the cvs down the road get ripped to shreds.

  • did any body see the funnel forming 4-28-11?

  • man all we ever get in gaithersburg are tornado warnings... we never get to see the real thing!

  • mah bro was 1 about to be 2 that is creepy

  • we were in olive garden when they had a tornado warning

  • We lost our house in Quailwood to this storm. Thanks for posting video as we were not home when it happened - Thank God!!

  • for some reason I'll never know, for the 1st time I took 488 to go north to work instead of driving straight into the tornado. Still got hailed on in my car (gosh it was LOUD) but someone was sitting on my shoulder that day. RIP Mr. Hammonds who passed away in his truck during the tornado. Thx for youtubing the video.

  • great capture, but why the music LOL..

  • That hail is insane!

  • Its hard to believe its been almost 9 years!

  • @IzziBella234 lol

  • i was only 5 when this happened i didnt know what was going on

  • lol its a tornado who said that

  • this is the most frightening tornado video I have ever seen. Maybe its the music, or maybe the sense of dread that you can feel when this F-5 is coming.

  • @eddihaskell The tornado was rated f4. It was definitely not at f4 strength when this video was taken because the rotation looks relatively weak..

  • @GOODY61 This was tearing up the houses in and across from Clarks Run when it was filmed. Tell THEM it wasn't an F4. GOODY thinks he's some sort of expert, lol.

  • @typyclsytuation Not an expert but I am interested in the subject and watch a lot of tornado videos for comparison. My position is the tornado as it appears in this video was not at F4 strength. Tornados can develop strength rapidly in less than a minute but I do not see strong rotation in this video. No doubt this tornado was rated F4 strength at some point during it's cycle and fatalties did occur.

  • @GOODY61 This was recently featured on Storm Series and it's also one of many featured in a 5 disc collection!

  • this is the most frightening tornado video I have ever seen. Maybe its the music, or maybe the sense of dread that you can feel when this F-5 is coming.

  • it doesnt even look like its doing anything but I lived in Bowie at that time and I was freakin that it was a F5 tornado that close to home. I realize that some people lost that their lives during this storm. You all were very lucky. Cool video

  • I remember going to MIR the Friday after it all happened and the whole town was just torn apart. The church and high school was just demolished. Insane to see the damage it did.

  • lol "tornader" sorry I remember this tornado I was terrified :P

  • this tornado was officially rated as an F-4 by NWS

  • I'm the insurance agent and heard the get your dent fixed comment. BUSTED!

  • I remember this i was at the la plata fair when this happend we had to leave fast we took shelter in a mcdonalds but didnt get hit were away from the tornado XD

  • what was falling from the sky??

  • The F-5 tornados are the huge ones so that means the bigger the tornado is the more destruction.

  • the smart thing would have been to put your cars in the garage because those golf ball size hail can do serious damage to them

  • @DiamondsGlow87 There was already a Mustang on one side of the garage and the other side was full. Trust me, we would have if there was space.

  • @typyclsytuation is it marland us?

  • @cjowner99 yes.....

  • oh no im 11 right now but that was when i was 2 oh no luckly i didnt die

  • @typyclsytuation I just missed being in that Tornado. Was at the Twin Kiss when it hit.

  • i rememberr this dayy . it wass crazyy !

  • i live near laplata but it hasnt happened in a couple years it happened when i was 2 years

  • is that video takin in Kings Grant?

  • this was funny but interesting i would be very scared good thing i was in ny that day

  • i used to live there i didnt know how bad it was til i went outside.. horrible..

  • lol that was an f5 for anyone who didnt know they calles it a "super twister" even tho it looked so docile

  • That tornado fucked up Laplata. That's weeks before i moved into St. Mary's County.

  • i remember that shit. i live in Indian Head. tornado started across the mattawoman river in the marbury area. leveled in a section of the roof at lackey high school. school was cancelled for 2 days. heard LPHS was way worse.

  • Strange how it doesn't really look all that violent. Most videos you see of F4s and F5s, you KNOW its an F4-F5.

And this monster happened only a few months after the College Park tornado. I know the mid-atlantic isn't immune to tornadoes, but to get two violent ones like that is rare....

  • god i remember this. those 2 girls. i was only in 6th grade.

  • that was on my birthday and i live on the va side of dc. because i love weather, it was a pretty cool birthday present!

  • I like tornadoes too but not when they kill.

But of course, just about everyone wants to hear about people getting killed on their birthday.

  • hail!!!!!!!!!!

  • i live in baltimore too

  • That morning i parked my car at cvs and went golfing down at wicomoco shores, we never knew there was a storm until we came back to laplata and my car was totally crushed by the safeway sign on 301 and my mother n law was in line at the bank and the drive thru collapsed on her. The footage of my car made it on national news with the man Tom Brokaw

  • Why do people keep assuming things about how strong this was?

  • because it was strong. it was an f5 tornado. 6 people died. ans school was tore down. houses were destroyed. building were demolished. my mother's boos's house was tore in half.

  • This was actually an F4. But I was referring to the fact that people presume that they can determine a tornado's strength with just a quick glance. I've seen people who, just from a quick glance, think it was an F1.

  • @youuggg312 lucky, I have been hoping for my school to be hit by a tornado for years, It doesn't help I live in New York

  • My daughter and I live in La Plata and were shopping when the tornado hit. I "twist" of fate saved us. We were shopping for a birthday card and while at a red light were debating between going to CVS or the then new Wal-Mart; both in La Plata. We decided to try the Wal-Mart. When we came out the front doors of the Wal-Mart after buying a card, we saw the tornado as it destroyed the CVS. The CVS is now an Outback restaurant.

  • oh yah ive been thre

  • right dowbn in waldrof ids ware i am!!

  • hey, I was living in Newburg when this happen, not too far away from La Plata. lol. it knot over my tree

  • I was in Prince Frederick at the time, we saw plywood flying in the air from this puppy

  • i live in Baltimore i wasn't far from this

  • i live in st.mary's county i wasn't that far from this

  • i live maybe 20 miles from la plata. this storm was freakin my family out. but i thought this was in 2001?

  • I remember when this storm was reported on the news. I had just moved to Pennsylvania from Anne Arundel County a few weeks prior to this happening.

  • i remember that day aswell.... for anyone that lives down that way i was gong down turkey hill rd when all of a sudden hail teh size of baseballs were hitting my car.the rain was so hard it was like a firehose was hitting it. then this erie fog rolled in. scary shit!!!

  • I remember that day, I live in Baltimore County and the hale destroyed my dad's truck

  • I live in Harford County and I remember that day I was almost 7 years old and we were under a tornado watch and I freaked out. Then we found out about this tornado.

  • The vid is amazing, and OMG! is this the one (or more) that tore up Laplata??

  • I was in 6th grade and remember hearing about those sisters. do you know what it would be rated on the enhanced fujita scale?

  • Comment removed

  • Where in Laplata is this?

  • Kings Grant

  • You'd be right, nothing you can do about nature. Nice capture of the brief hail

  • I remember this storm. I was at work at the time (I worked at 6 flags) and they had told us to take cover because a tornado touched down in La Plata. It scared the hell out of me.

  • it looked like it was going to hit that one house :o

  • Sorry I love stormchasing lol

  • As a Stormchaser for Maumee.. I'm aware of the Fujita scale formed by Professer Ted Fujita.. I was amzzed to see that it was an F4.. thank the gods it wasn't an F5 when you filmed other wise it would been a panic

  • "As a Stormchaser for Maumee.. I'm aware of the Fujita scale formed by Professer Ted Fujita.."

    LOL - okay dude.

  • How ever that almost looks like a f-2 to f3 tornaday, more even within the f1.. at first I thought it was a Microburst, but more into the video it was a tornado.. Nice

  • Well as I'm sure you know the Fujita Scale is based on damage caused and if you could see the town you would agree it was an F4. In fact, it was initially claasified as an F5 and later DOWNGRADED to an F4.

I know it doesn't look very menacing in the video but while I was shooting this video it was tearing up a neighboorhood beyond those woods, leveling several of the homes.

  • I'm a stormchaser for Maumee Ohio

  • how did your car manage to be at the end of this?

  • They all had a few dings but nothing major. The 4Runner was the worst off.

The car under the cover is a `69 Firebird convertible. Afterwards we pulled hail from off the front seat. It had penetrated the car cover and convertible top!

  • I remember when this happened...laplata got messed up it took quite a while for the recovery process. I like how in the video theyre having a casual conversation about what wax they use lol

  • I always thought Maryland was too deep down (valley like) to get tornadoes but lately I find myself running to the basement just incase lol I live in PG, we had a tornadoe last yr in the Cheverly area.

  • I lived in MD at the time i was going to milton sommers, like two windows were broken, and like three years later you could still see the exact path of the tornado. It was crazy. We had pieces of hail for forever.

  • i was in 4th grd when that happend

  • i live in kings grant and i was ike 10 when tyhis happpened it was so crazy my whole family was freaking out but at least i got out of skool for like a week. haha

  • i live 10 min away from kings grant it tore up quailwood down the road from my home

  • when was this tornado?

i remember hearing about it in salisbury

  • oh nevermind i just saw its in the title hahaha

  • 4-28-2002.

    She was a doozy!

  • is tht kings grant?

  • Yeah, Kings Grant.

  • yepp i was 6 and scared the living shit outta me :(

  • I think you were 9; it was in 2002.

  • when that happened i was in like larule maryland but in like 2006 i moved down there

  • i remember hearing about that

  • i remember that when i lived in MD

  • we had a hugggggge tornado warning, i live in talbot like 4 weeks ago, but it never did come through

  • Oh yeah, we were talking about other crap because there was no way that thing looked like a REAL tornado and was doing the damage it did!

  • They were okay, for the most part, some hail damage. I know it's not pretty but under that car cover is a 1969 Firebird Convertible. After I put the camera down we opened the door and pulled out a few pieces of hair that went through the cover AND the convertible top!

  • We just had a tornado rip through my neighboorhood Wednesday.I live down in Calvert.

  • im stayin in dc not going to va or md fuck that

  • that tornado hit hoopersisland where i live..it was bout 5 mins from my house...it tore apart one house...nothin left of it but the toilet...thats it...an it was rated an f4

  • Has anyone noticed that nothing really happens to Baltimore (city) that is storm related?

  • I'm glad there are more people like you here to teach ignorant people like 9secondsflat, what tornadoes are like. This was a great vid, I've been looking for a different vid of the la plata tornado. That hail was impressive! I live north around frederick and I've never seen hail that large around here before. I image it left a few dents in somethings.

  • was it a f1 or f2? wind speeds?

  • Initially rated an F5 but later reduced to an F4.

  • there is no way it was even close to an f4...houses would be gone....

  • Uh, houses and buildings WERE gone. The ones in the video weren't because it's pretty obvious the tornado went by BEHIND them. Do your research son.

  • Thanks for the video... Sorry you guys had to wittiness that. The storm killed 2 as far as we know.

We had funnels here, but no touchdowns. I live in Dorchester County, East New Market, on the Eastern shore.

    Thankfully no others were killed...

    Again, thanks for the video!

  • damn thing took my whole kitchen and upstairs to my house. and my brother slept through the whole thing. i lived over behind the dash-in. didnt know what it was till it was over.

  • i went to milton somers which was hit, well the the tennis court was hit n a lot of my friends houses were hit n they had to find other places to live for a longgg time, crazii to see it like this tho.

  • I was driving out to the beach that day, and idiot that I am I wasn't listening to the radio...just CDs and my iPod. I got to the Bay Bridge I found that the gates were up and they weren't collecting tolls. I just thought, "sweet!" and kept going. I had no idea it was because the booths had been evacuated. D'oh!

  • anyone remember the tornado that hit the Maryland campus in fall 2001? killed two UM students, a pair of sisters?

  • I remember, and yeah, two sisters.

  • That tornado has been on storm stories on the Weather Channel.

  • yes I do.

that same outbreak had atornado in North Laurel in the setlers landing neighborhood, a left and a right from were i live.

also a tornado destroted a part of laurel high school that same storm

  • i was there my house was dystoyed....i almost died but i am happy i lived

  • Amen.

  • my anut lives in quailwood and her house is on a hill. the neighbors around her got their houses trampled over and her's was barely scraped. i live in charlotte hall and that day all i see is a big ass black cloud floating over hugesville. my aunt has like a whole freezer full of the hail that fell. it tasted good with some snow cone syrup on it.

  • Now if only a tornado can come through laplata so that it will destroy all of those pharmacies!

  • haha! I remember that day. I was going to Lackey High School and our basement was flooded for two days.

  • lol. Seriously. They got rid of Roy Rogers!!!

  • i remeber this... i was 7 when that happend and our school is about an hour from lapata

  • it ruined my house >:(

  • Where was your house?

  • u only got payed 300

  • Yeah, $300. I don't think I could've gotten away with trying for more!

  • LMAO o yh btw i live in white plaines now highgrove

  • ouytdyu

  • I live in Lexington Park,I remember this.Alot of tornadoes come close to Lp but thank god they never actually get here.Except for that one in 2005 or somethin.

  • We live near Tornado Alley now. They keep saying I'll know when I hear one because they sound like a train, problem is we live 2 blocks from the train tracks. I just wait for the tornado to blow the horn & I know not to run. lol

  • I thought it just sounded like a constant rolling thunder. And I would think that if you were hearing something that sounds like a train yet wasn't an actual train, that it's too late - that thing's right on top of you!

  • You just have to understand how laid back we are in Md. We lived in Federalsburg at the time & my husband was running around the yard catching bingo papers, tar paper from roofs ect. before the rain even started there. Days later we even found part of a bank deposit slip from County First Bank in Laplata just laying in the yard. The men are right "Watcha gonna do about it?"

  • Nuthin' you CAN do! Haha

  • theres a tornado right in front of you and ur talkin about car wax, lmao, thats hilarious...

  • wow thats big hail... I'm from bel air md... never seen anything like that!

  • Tight ass video man i really respect you for filming this about my home town and for risking your life to film this.

  • man 300 dollars? u risked ur life for this vid it shouldve been 1000 or 10000. thats to risky man

  • That's what they offered and I didn't know how much I should ask for! This was just one story for a day or two for them so I figure they probably don't pay out TOO much for something like this. Oh well!

  • We were driving down Hawthorn Rd when it went through Qualewood. Where was the guy standing when he took this video?

    Mojo

  • I was on N. Wiltshire Court on King's Grant; 488 is on the other side of the fence seen when the hail started coming down while the dogs were playing around.

    Matt

  • Here's an F4 tornado passing nearby, and the guy is talking about a new kind of wax on his car (which gets whacked by the very predictable large hail that accompanies tornadoes.) If you need a demonstration of what constitutes "typical guy behavior", here it is.

  • buenisimo

  • Right on! Great to catch the tornado and the hail on the same video.

  • this thing tore apart my neighborhood and it was tight

  • It was 25 miles south of DC, I guess that counts as "almost". The one that killed those two sisters in College Park was closer.

  • i would be driving right along side the twister

  • thats a pretty graceful tornado... doesnt look like its doing too much damage except to earth... and the poor buildings that went up in the first few seconds. That was some naaasty hail though...

  • believe it or not that was infact an F5

  • Actually it was downgraded to an F4.

  • ... and it almost hit D.C.
