It is a syncretic religion of which sufi Islam is only the latest veneer. When Indonesia became independant the ruling government only Recognised Islam and christianity and many who did not identify under them were liable to be deemed communists and some 500,000 people were massacred only later were other world religions recognised.

The so called Kejawan the majority of Javas population are not Muslims as one would see amongst Malays or Arabs. Their islamic influence is tawasuf and that form of Islam is not bound by dogmatic interpretation, it is mysticism that transcends boundaries and is the only reason that Indonesia can stay as one nation.

@maharis2000 In Indonesia everyone has to label themselves according a very restricted number of religions. Originally it was just Islam and Christianity. After the massacres and the determination of the Balinese, the ancient relgions of Indonesia; Hinduism and Buddhism were recognised, only in the last few years Confucianism was recognised. However the religion of the majoirty of people in truth is not the Islam you might know. There are many hundreds of expressions of religion.

The santri or so-called 'Pure' Muslims are a minority, but they wish to eradicate all other forms of belief within Javanese Islam whereas the majoirty of Javanese are Kejawan and follow Abangan Islam, the hybrid faith that embraces the heart of what Javanese faith is. The latter many muslims in the world would not regard as Islam.
