A brilliant sketch in a truly brilliant series - only one complaint, why didn't they get Brian Cant to narrate it? He was the narrator on the original 'Camberwick Green' and so definitely the top choice.
This is my favorite show of the last, say, 10 years. Then again, I don't watch much TV, and the stuff I do watch is usually on DVD or re-runs years after it's done. I only discovered this show in January when they started airing it on public television here in the US. Thank goodness they did! Since then I have bought both seasons.
@ajball2000 Yes the Blue Peter Garden sketch was pretty damn funny, particularly for those like me who are old enough to remember when it got vandalised.
@DarkAngel182 know what you mean. I was sitting there watching that and had one of those 'oh yeah, I remember this' moments. So it was Gene hunts fault then lol
Oh,,, how I long for the day when being "Politically Correct" is punishable by hanging and nonces receive the Edward II award for sodomy ...The good old days
These days the Metropolitan Police of London (biggest employer of Lesbians in the UK) are more concerned with arresting the people who stop the nonces - forget about British cops "kicking them in" if you bugger a young boy it is a just a light caution.
Loved the US version (saw it first) and love the UK version. Provides and interesting contrast between the two nations. That aside, really wish this clip had gone further though. Was bloody brilliant.
"hello sam, how are you today? oh dear, not very happy. is it gene hunt? is he kicking in a nonce?"
All funny quotes, but i tend to laugh more at the actions of sam, gene and the nonce as the quotes are being said!
I am a fan of this series, but not the US version. I live in the US and wanted to give it a fair shake, but to me, NO ONE could play Gene Hunt like Philip Glenister!
you took the words STRAIGHT out of my mouth. philip glenister was born for the part of gene hunt! i was purely insulted when i saw clips of the american gene, i was like WTF?!
the bit that always makes me laugh is when Gene Hunt stops beating up the nonce, they both wave to the camera, and then Gene Hunt continues to spang the nonce with a dustbin lid.
That is true, but wasn't Sam's body not discovered and they assumed he was dead? He may have escaped the car he was driving. It is a Sci-Fi, so anything can happen!
I was so sure it was going to be Viv...after we all saw how much the team respected him on his birthday in the same episode.
Then again...I thought that creepy police officer that has been stalking Alex throughout this series was going to be Sam...can't believe this guy shot himself though.
see u cant get that kind of humor here in the states. we should never of made our own version. just because the office did so good in america does not mean that every BBC show is going to do the same.
This is a cracking trailer. I agree too that Ashes to Ashes is not a patch on Life on Mars . This trailer is better acted in a minute than the whole of Ashes to Ashes series one and as for the new series well?? It's dire.
Gene Hunt was Barney Mcgrews cousin off Trumpton.I met Barney while visiting my nan in a care home in Barnsley. He says the wages they got then for the series were fucking appaling.
Probably got butchered for ads. It was also cut on TV One in New Zealand—even when it was repeated this year at midnight. Like there's a lot of ads at midnight!
yeah ive been following it and i still like the brits better. it is hard to like the american sam and every time i see the american gene i think its mr orange
The British series was shown on BBC America. Yanks won't accept British TV series on prime time television, whereas we'll watch just about any old US show on British TV. Chalk it up to either the greater open-mindedness of the British or a complete lack of discrimination. From what I can gather the Yanks don't get the Brit sense of humour and/or they can't understand our accents.
I'm from the US, and My Country has a closed minded tasted in entertainment
I'm concerned as to why they shun away such great programs like The Raccoons and The Wombles in favor of garbage like South Park and Family Guy
Note: The Wombles did come to the US in the Summer of 1974 as a frequent part of Captain Kangaroo, sadly their band counterpart did poorly here. Rolling Stone gave the record "Remember You're A Womble" 2 stars, 2 FUCKING STARS!. WTF!
hey kitsuneraner ..... a close friend said this has'nt gone down too well in the States - guessl they don't have our sense of humour or such BRILLIANT actors
They've done a pretty good job - perhaps too good a job in a way because the budget is obviously much greater for the Yank version. They re-shot the entire first series of the American version becasue it wasn't working properly. I'm not sure how popular it is. They have some class actors in it, and the cars and clothes are ace. The Yank humour is different, but the grittiness is very much the same and the violence is even harsher, IMHO.
Fantastic. Pure genius writing. The creators have a real eye and love for pop culture. Can't see myself watching the US version - looks a bit shite but it might mean more to Americans. Still, disco versus Bowie and Bolan? Not a chance. And all respect to Mr Meaney, but there's only one Gene Hunt!
Actually you're right, heard that too, and some Irish actor playing Sam Tyler. Don't know why it's different from the pilot. Not convinced though - still only one Gene Genie.
Such a brilliant part of Life on Mars! I love how Gene waves half-way through beating up the guy, and then the guy also waves. Definitely one of the best moments in the entire show!
Ashes to Ashes is also an ace programme, but it just doesn't have that feeling and structure in Life on Mars. Plus Alex Drake is just too confident in herself, she knows what's happened, whereas Sam is completely confused about what's happened to him.
Did you know in fall there will be an American version of Life On Mars. Sam Tyler will be played by Jason O'Mara and Gene Hunt will be played by Colm Meaney. They are going to be LAPD. The story line is the same tho.
