  • this is how skynet starts

  • Haha, f'ing awesome.

  • Genius!!!

  • no coment

    just great!!!

  • considering this instrument is entirely autonomous and doesn't play conventionally, this was done very wonderfully. 2 thumbs up!

  • Very charming!

  • sounds like a slide bagpipe

  • That's pretty cool.

  • ...just, wtf..... =(

  • At least professional musicians can rest assured that, for the time being at least, their jobs aren't threatened by robots.

  • kind of funny actually

  • so confussssssed!

  • Prettty good without ears..

  • you my friend are a mad scientist

  • so very true.

  • Quite possibly the best video on YouTube.

  • Boy did I laugh and laugh!!!!!!!!!!

  • It sounds like Ocarina of Time singing voices.

  • that contraption's got a crap sense of pitch!

  • True, but funny as hell anyway :P

  • it sounds like its out of tune?....

  • that makes it more robo-like

  • that's just purely weird. :S i like it though. but i think i liked crazy better.. not into patsy. hehe

  • wa is the device that you use??

  • it is called a theremin and normally its played with a persons hands

  • so this what it would sound like if cyber men had emotions

  • that song...is it pokemon?

  • haha.

  • Great application

  • cool idea. but if a was you I did it on when the tone was right so you don`t have the tone between the that tone.(I don`t know if it`s passable)but for example if you wanna go from A to C. you slide from A,Ab,B,Bb,C. you know?

it`s just an idea. hope you understand it.

    Good Luck!!

  • oh I forgot a part=P

I meant that it sounds better if you go from A to C instead of going form: A,Ab,B,Bb ,C. I don`t know if you can control the uuh.... "ToneTime" (the time you hear the tones) but maybe you can set it so that you only hear the A&C for example.

I hope you can understand it!!

    Good Luck!!

  • man he´s not a retard

I hope you can understand it!!

  • No that`s not what I ment. I thought maybe my explaination is bad. Becouse I`m not English/American I don`t know if my explaintion is understandable for people that have engish as there mainlanguage.

    you know?

PS:maybe my English is better than I think it is?

    Cheers.

  • The instrument is called a theramin and is played by using the proximity of your hands to two antennas. One for volume the other for pitch (the vertical).

    So cool.

  • what is the instrument, its just a stick next to another stick ona motor, but these are so cool!!!

  • this is LOVE!!!

  • I need this as a ring tone or something! Don't tune it-that's where the joy lies!

  • pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease tune that theremin...

  • jaja very funny!!

  • I don't know what makes the sounds, are those mics??? D:

    I love it though!! HOORAY!

  • I think it the sound is caused by interference between two antenna..

  • I couldn't build Lev, so it's fairly amazing...However, it is horrendously out of tune.

  • Someone needs to tune the robot way to flat.

  • Lev really needs to be donated, or sold to the smithsonian, but only when it's time has come. For now, I want to see more of lev's performances. :)

  • I never knew this instrument really existed! But I understand the principles anyway.. :-)

  • why is it so damn out of tune

  • i dont understand what produces the sound?

  • The instrument is called a theramin. It uses radio frequencies to generate a tone. You can play it without touching it.

  • AMAZING!

  • ...this is Willie Nelson's robot double calling, do you know ON THE ROAD AGAIN?

  • Can you do some Deep Purple? Smoooooke on the Waaaaater...

  • IT's a midi MIDI to Control voltage converter so the theremin is actually powered by the midi track containing the melody. Cool stuff, NO?

Probably took a good bit of time to get it right.

  • So maybe you should learn how a theremin works...it's not powered by a "midi track." You see the robot flailing the batons around? That's what's changing the pitch of the noise coming from the theremin. Jerk.

  • you are dumber than you look

  • the midi is controlling the arm. therefore it's not as amazing as you think.

  • Superbiously fantasticenating ;-)

  • wtf! how this work?? hahahah

  • Great stuff 5 *****

  • You win at life, that's all there is to it. Fucking A, man, fucking A.

  • My. Ears. Are. Bleeding.

  • thank you very very much.

  • Pretty crazy stuff.

Looks like the nearest moving "antenna" controls the pitch by changing the distance to the fixed antenna or something.

and the farther moving antenna controlls the amplitude? this one seems to be using the fixed loop as its refrence or whatever.

    Pretty complicated.

  • its a theremin playing robot lol thats awesome, usually people play them with both hands instead of robot rods, if oyu want more info on the instrument wiki it, its very fascinating

  • lev rulez!^^

  • do you control the arms with a MIDI controller? That would be the coolest shit ever.

You can buy my idea for one million dollars.

  • Excellent. Did you notice that the slight tremble as the servo locks to position each note gives a pleasant little tremello? That could be something you work into the program, ie tremello/vibrato.

  • Lev should do some metallica or acdc. that would be classic!

  • I agree with JoelLara!

  • Please, please, do NOT do crazy frog! :))

  • LoL, who do you work for "should be a big name program comp" if not should go for it

  • Does Lev know the Dark Shadows theme?

  • Coming along nicely MoonMilk.

  • that really good :)..

    and humorious

  • There will always be critics in this world. I think the concept and execution are both genius. And not without humor, unlike these tiresome critics who probably don't even have jobs.

  • I hope that Lev doesn't take all this criticism to heart much. There are bound to be flaws in any neophyte musician's technique, but there's often a lot of promise too. Listening to this recording, it's clear that Lev has a lot of enthusiasm and soul. I hope Lev doesn't get discouraged by the negative comments here and perseveres with the craft -- there aren't enough good theremin players out there!

  • things can't always be programmed better, there are limits to what it can do.

  • I notice that an integral part of the "robot" is an Altoids ("The Curiously Strong Mint") can.

    Nice.

  • It's bad. Your robot needs to be able to hear what it's playing. Seriously, you need a feedback loop to get the pitch right. That's what a human does.

  • Now, I'm sure a lot of work went into this, and I applaud your creativity. But this sounds worse than those canned midi songs that, amazingly, people still use on their sites. (Hint: tune it up and program a vibrato)

  • It's a robot playing a Tharamin..........can you better? I highly doubt it.

  • You're absolutely right. I can't do any better. Good job.

  • although that is a harsh comment. i agree.

yes it is very creative, unfortunatly not everything works.

this is a good experiment, but musically it is poop

  • Tune it! Gah.

  • Flight of the Bumblebee would have been impressive.

  • The pitch is slightly off.

  • It sounds lame, but the technology behind it might be spectacular -- you can never tell. If it was generating the sounds based on listening to the piano part, that would be hella impressive. If it was just playing some pre-recorded stuff though, kinda lame overall.

  • Do you understand what you are saying? If it is NOT pre-recorded, and somehow generates the lead from some analysis of the piano, the robot would be COMPOSING. And I'm pretty sure it didn't compose "Crazy".

  • Yes and no. My idea was more along the lines of comparing the notes to an internal mapping of the song, and figuring out where it is in the song on the fly. Kind of like how star trackers work, or how the Stanford DARPA challenge car worked.

Everything's pre-planned, but even within that you can have a lot of intelligence.

  • Wow, someone built a machine to emulate a drunk on karaoke night...

  • Needs more cowbell, obviously.

....and a little vibrato on the sustained notes.

If you are taking requests, I'd love to hear it do "Mnah, Mnah".

  • Ouch, pretty bad intonation... :P

  • As a computer science degree holder, I applaud the effort. Cool application of robotics. But as a professional musician, I have to say, it's hard to enjoy when things are so out of tune.

Does your apparatus not afford fine-grained control enough? Could be.. But if it does, you might try tuning the note positiions a little better. Also add some vibrato, it will help cover up the pitch issues.

    Cool project, cool video!

  • Very cool but VERY flat.. :)

  • I've heard better renditions of this song from my ass.

  • perhaps you can record and post your rendition and maybe we will applaud and give you a standing ovation

  • I'll bring the beans!

  • I've got a music degree and teach music to kids. I'll tell ya, out of all my students, that's the best, most musical thing i've ever heard.

  • Perhaps that says a lot about your teaching methods?

  • i like it

  • that is the worst fucking noise i have ever heard. i would rather listen to trains screeching into Union Sq. than that.

  • how romantic

  • well, this is usually about the same as how it sounds in a karaoke bar. shitty.

  • Interesting idea, but yeah, tuning needs some work :)

  • hahahahah this is exactly what we'll listen to when the soulless robots take over the planet

  • that has got to be one of the most annoying sounds i've ever heard...

  • holy cow that is pretty...not in tune....ugh...

  • God.. somebody kill that thing.

  • Wow man, u gotta tune this thing, seriously. Great idea but without proper tuning it's NIGHTMARISH to anyone with any sense of intonation.

  • I don't know, it's *so* out of tune it's actually very funny!

  • Now if you could just get William Shatner to sing to it, you would have a powerful weapon of mass destruction.

  • Blugh, that sounds horrible.

  • Great idea, but OW... TUNING!

(yeah i realize it's gotta be hard to control, but some of the longer notes are so far out of tune its REALLY painful to listen to)

  • I think if the robot was able to add vibrato to these long notes, it would help out a lot to cover up any bum notes.

  • creative man , creative

  • Wow! I must say, that robomin is impressive. Reminds me of those mechanical bands.

  • Excellent!

If you do accept request ... please remember my wishes :

#1 The flight of the bumble bee

    #2 The sabre dance

    ...absolute madness anthems...

  • Do you do requests?

    Tom Jones' Delilah.

  • Nice! How do you input the position information to the robot's "arms?"

  • This is great! I WANT MORE!!!

  • HA THATS COOL AS HELL!!!
