oh my god i loved these clips, i thought this morning i would allocate only five minutes today to watching opera on YouTube, and i ended up watching the whole "favorite opera moments" series when i have tons of really important things to do... thanks a lot coloraturafan ;-)
I hope that a producer is so wise to record these upcoming productions of Ms. Devia, so that more people can enjoy them on DVD of CD. We nevertheless are blessed for a person like you Coloraturafan to share these operaclips with us.
Wow! I haven't seen a video of Serra that young before! What a difference between your second clip and her well known Queen of the Night interpretation!
chapeau bas to your taste, coloraturafan. devia truly is sheer sophistication. i am not familiar with hoch, but she is delightful. sutherland did a great job with serafin, and serra, in top form, is electric.
Beverly Hoch's "wow, look what I can do" high note is impressive, but completely disconnected from the rest of her voice. My favorite here is Serra and Sutherland's Lucia is just unbeatable.
Another question...I can't think of a better person to ask. What is up with Devia not performing at the MET? I read that on one of your videos... Can you give me the reasons why that came about?
People tend to forget but Devia sang at the Met for 15 years from 1979 to 1994 for a total of 73 performances with the company. Her last performance in the US was with the OONY in 1999. I think one of the main reasons she doesn't sing here anylonger is the fact she doesn't like to travel far from her home in Italy.
And yet she travels to Japan nearly every year. There is still a mystery in why she did not become a huge star in New York. Maybe it is simply the fact that the Met has not really favored bel canto.
This is true, Devia does perform still in Japan, but that is about the only area outside central Europe that she still performs. Who knows why Tokyo is the lucky city of choice? I am just so happy that she is still performing at the level she is, and we should all take advantage of this vocal phenominon while we still can, either in Italy of Japan :) I know of at least four upcoming performances: Traviata, Lucrezia Borgia, Maria Stuarda, and I Puritani.
I am not sure of the exact dates and locations.... the only one I know for sure is Lucrezia Borgia in Acona Feb 2010. Then the Stuarda is in March, Traviata is in Tokyo in Nov, and Puritani I know is 2010, but not the date or location. I would tell you go and see her now! She is performing better than ever, and you only get so many chances :)
Thank you coloraturafan for providing such fabulous videos. Pardon me for asking such a stupid question, but I have been trying to look for an official website for Devia to check her future performances, but I am unable to spot one. How did you manage to find the dates & locations? Thanks.
Devia, Devia, Devia...always you put forth the best soprano(s). What's up with that? ;D
Seriously, though...did you have a plan for the number of scenes you would call "favorite"? Just curious...because it's easy to get carried away...I know I would!
Devia in this Lucia's clip looks like a drag-queen!!! lol

I have pre-selected clips, and there will be one more... I could produce more, but probably not.
