this movie was actually based on a true story.. . the Grecian people had to fight for their freedom from the persians. Darius was Xerxes father and they bring that out in the movie as well. Pretty awesome and factualy. The Roman's used to use the same tactic in their fighting as the Spartans did.. And yes Spartans were a racial group back in the day. .

It was pretty much just an artistic license used to over-dramatise what would of been epic in and of it's self. I mean, come on! The idea of three-hundred men slaughtering an army? HOW did that need to be taken out of historical context to make it epic? Or did the director just want to see a lot of well-toned oiled male bodies?

The studio was not looking to make 300 based on the actual events. They were looking to make the 300 that Frank Miller depicted in his graphic novel. Hoplite is Ancient Greek for a bearer of a ὅπλον or Hoplon (a large oak shield embossed with bronze.) It was a title NOT a rank. Spartan hoplites wore a bronze breastplate, a chain mail skirt and bronze greaves. The Spartans wore their scarlet cloaks into battle as opposed to other Greeks who would drop their cloaks before entering battle.
