About the ears hearing two different sounds, I'm with you on that one. Plus the slightest delay between the house sound, from the distance, and your headphones can be maddening. Only thing, if you are in an open booth close to the pit, won't the monitor speakers bleed out into the crowd?
So if I got it right (I'm an aspiring DJ btw) what's not going to the amp, it's going to the headphones (if their volume is up enough) so I can prepare the next track or mess around untill I find what I want in a track. Cheers ;)
hi im looking at buying a pair of cdj 2000's soon with a pioneer djm 2000, no amp but a set of active reference speakers. never been into mixing but love music and realy want to give it a go and only the best will do. do you have any tips, best places for down loads etc.
the mixer faceplate/decal is dope. Is there a place to snag one of those (I feel like that's something the "sicmats" people would be into), or is that custom?
Even mixers from Behringer got an output for the booth, so you can plugin in your 2nd pa (booth monitors) in there. No need for adaptors... Could only be useful for a DJ Team, who need more than one solution for prehearing their set...
@Dav3Mash I'm with you there, but the booth output gives you the same you hear on the main. No good for this. But, in any case, this is no good either. I don't want the crowd (around me) to hear what I hear on the cue.
Mixing with your ear plugs in is also a pain often. Listening through a PA is sometimes the only option, since not every headphones (or mixer) can get up to the sound level you need with 20 dB of damping in your ears!
Because u can't select Cue on your booth. You only get the master output. The is the Norm for the majority of mixers. i've only come across one with a selectable cue/master booth, and thats the studiomaster fusion which is more of a karaoke mixer
Radio desks have the CUE on the booth output as well, since you often have more than one person in the studio (not always with headphones on). But re-wiring the headphones to go over a pair of speakers is just as easy.
Good one, but doesnt this mess up your ears alot ? for me the best would be to use in ear monitors, but since I havent got 800 euros to buy a pair yet, I'll just do with my headphones :D

i wish vdj was never invented it gives us reak dj's who use serato a bad name. i does my head in that some dick will steal a cracked version off some torrent site and call themselves dj's. the only way to learn is the hard way , yes it takes time but you will be better for it in the long run. your only cheating yourself !
@driftdaddy328 oh my god. im so sorry i have a cracked version of virtual dj. let me stop using it and delete it becuase some cunt says its bad and cheating. a lot of people like to practise with virtual dj then learn on the real thing. if you hate it so much then do something about it. take virtual dj off the market. until then stfu and gtfo of here becuse you already know how to dj but you like to fuck with people tring to learn.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The problem is you haven't paid a thing to 'learn' (which if you're using VDJ to do then you're shooting yourself in the foot). If you'd have paid for the software thats one thing, but you haven't, so you don't have any right to even be using it to 'learn'.
@chazhs to be honest. if i could i would steal the equipment. sad but true. for the reason of me wanting me learn to do it on the real thing. and its free. and i can be a mobile dj and make money.
That is exactly the point why I quit mobile djing. In the eighties and early nineties, a dj had to pay for all the sound carriers (vinyls & cds). Now everyone can download pirated tracks and software and many are not even ashamed to get paid as a mobile dj who is working without investing a lot of money benefitting by illegal downloads. And those people then work for less money. That is not a good thing! Please think about, what your are doing to the artists, programmers and the other djs!
@djbassline8 well i do feel like an asshole. and i guess i am but, i dont have enough money to do all that buying and more buying. if i find a cheap all in one mixer player. that would be better then i can have money on the side for software speakers etc. for now i am forced to pirate things and it makes me feel like a dick.
If I would start today as a newbie, a would bye such a thing: American Audio SDJ2 DJ-Mediaplayer and some good mp3 compilations from itunes / amazon. A good mobile dj can rock a party with 200 - 500 tracks. I have a little emergency cd wallet with about 20 audio cds: 2 House / 2 Dance / 2 Rock / 2 Black R'nB / 2 Top 40 Stuff and so on.... Sure you can't play every wish, but it is enough to let the people have a good time. You just need to survive 1-2 gigs and you have the bucks you need.Legal!
is there any corner of your house where you haven't recorded a vid?? ....did u do it in bathroom? that would be awsome :D haha...plus...awsome advise :) keep up the great work....
It doesn't sync tracks automatically so it's not 'cheating.' Sure, there is a sync button on Traktor, but it's boring to mix that way and the timecode vinyl doesn't work well with sync on :)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@Macaque909 carl cox and richie hawtin both use traktor and both have admitted that they let traktor sync for them...its not cheating and its not boring they use it so they can have time to do other things to manipulate the music
come on now! Let's say you can beatmatch, ok? And you use a program like tracktor or maybe Ableton or whatever and you use sync... I do not think that this is cheating because you're not a Beatmacher you are a Disc Jockey!!! Come on man the main thing is to make the others have a great time with your sets, make them crazy and also it's about you having great time! DJing is not about equipment it's about the Talent you have to manage your tracks and play them @ a good order and mix them correctly
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
just think all the preparation you got to do @ home. U got to learn all ur tracks and where to mix the next track. The other trick is to find the key of every track u got and finally if someone does not know how to btmtch it's his problem. I will say it again DJing is not about your equipment! I can't hear all the time, "oooh you use that how bad you new djs are, I use that & I'm a real good DJ" !!! The only thing I could say here is that Sync isn't good if you want t learn how to beatmatch
Actually I beatmatch without the headphones (sometimes), then use them to cue up the track. You clearly don't understand how DVS works, so stop trying to be a smartarse, and lay off the personal attacks.
BTW Carl Cox and Richie Hawtin both use the sync function in Traktor. They are hardly 'fake' DJs.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I beatmatch at home on just monitors, but I wouldn't dream of doing it out in a nightclub as I have already said. Yes Serato has a visual 'aide' which can sometimes be difficult to ignore as it's right in your face, Traktor uses an autosync feature so that requires even less of your time.
But... should you use these features instead of headphones? I don't think so. Not in a club environment, people nowadays appreciate real beatmixing, they know the difference.
Traktor doesn't use an autosync feature. It has an autosync feature, and it also has the same visual aids as Serato. It aslo has the option to beatmatch manually.
All three methods sound exactly the same, nobody in the crowd can possibly tell which method is used, but they can still hear a key clash.
Okay, I see where this all started. On the side of the old school DJ's, I think it is very important for every DJ that wants to beatmix, to learn how to do it manually, and to practice that way. Reason being, is you learn things from doing it manually that you can't by just letting the computer do it. On the flip side, I see no issue with using Sync to save time while out on the road. Keep in mind there is a LOT more to beatmixing than just mixing any old two beats together.
I think the new digital tools available these days can be a great asset, but the trick is, if new DJ's ONLY learn to beatmix using the sync button and automatic tools, they don't get an ear for it, or understand music structure, and there mixes turn out to be very limited in quality or imagination. A Chief might use a recipe, but he knows what the ingredients taste like, and can add to it/make it better. As for myself (I am NOT a chef), I can only do what the recipe says, or it's a mess.
Ive tried this in a big club on my first pio DJm 500/ CDJ 500 setup and man what a freaking loud sound in the booth, i felt it was a bit hard to get the tunes in order. So i think i prefers headphones.
Doesn't say its a bad idea though, may work flawless for some and less for others.
just a small tip though, monitor the volume, or you gonna blow a fuse or worst case scenario, burn up the speakers.
Wouldn't the people hear you while cuing up your track? All the scratching you're doing to scurry through the track and such. If its low enough, the sound might not be carried past the DJ booth, but that only defeats the purpose of not using headphones in the first place.
If your good enough or practise enough you should be able to mix without monitoring at all in most occasions anyway. I do this on a regular basis and much more fun.
So you don't use headphones to mix? I do hope you're not playing in any big clubs... To get proper deep mixes with good control over the bass/mid/treble any DJ no matter how good will fare better with monitors.
Any DJ who mixes without headphones in a nightclub envirionment with no monitors is an idiot. The only way you could do it reliably would be with some cheaty software such as VDJ or something else with inbuilt beatkeeping technlology.
Not everything is about getting 'perfect' mixes nothing wrong with playing around and messing with the crowd. Im a drum & bass DJ there is no strict format on how you should play. Perfectly capable of producing the same mix with or without headphones.
So you essentially rely on the autocue to find the first beat for you and then just try and ride the pitch (double beating and all) until you get the tracks synced? With the whole feed going straight out to the crowd?
CDJ 1000s cue up to the peak, drum&bass bpm is most commonly between 172-178, play the tracks and then if the track needs adjusting spin the wheel and adjust pitch accordingly for a steady match. There wouldnt be any double beating because you hit the cue point on time and the bpm are roughly the correct speed already.
Not the ideal way to mix really though is it.... Playing out to nightclubs full of people every weekend necessitates the need to mix with phones and monitors.
I'm not always playing music which I know 100% so just deciding to rely on a CDJ autocue (not 100% accurate) to cue a track for me and just be happy to wack the play button on beat and then pitch bend my way out of it. Mixes done this way are never going to be nightclub-grade tight.
Your not getting the point, obviously i use headphones to monitor, some tracks require it as they have a different rhythm or the beat if offset. Sometimes i would just throw it in there as a little 'teaser' such as a big tune you would just drop it in and most the tunes i would know well anyway based on selection.
Fair enough comment I suppose. I tend to touch the platter very little in the mix, all the beatmatching is done before I even think about bringing the channel fader up. Once I have the track beatmatched then I'll recue and play it live. Nightclubs expect nothing but perfect mixes.
@chazhs VDJ can be a cheaty software. Can be. But it's still the only one letting you put skins so there's no virtual waveforms - so it's actually the most realistic for this, if used professionally. That's why I respect it.
I haven't used VDJ very much but have seen other people use it. It's not stable enough for me, not to mention there are too many hacked copies about online for anyone and everyone to call themselves a DJ.
I use Serato to play out with and not only is it rock solid but there is no way for it to 'cheat'. I'd get bored if all I had to do was click a sync button I'm afraid, thats why I like Serato - real DJing without the backache from carrying in crates of CDs/Vinyl!
Of course - just saying you CAN cheat with vdj, but then again, you can not to also. But is Serato and its bpm calculator and waveform "real" djing? It's like the debate cdjs vs vinyl, equipment is evolving, that's all. :)
It may take some getting used to but, i can see the need and use of this... But what happens (and maybe I missed this) if you have one speaker to monitor the pre fader music and the other to monitor the post fader music?
I see what your trying to say but more venue's will have a half decent monitor system - if this isn't loud enough your not going to be lugging a big active speaker around to clubs!
What the name of your speakers ? ... how can i find them ... i have often seen them ... are they better than others or why can one see them often also in other videos
Unfortunatly not always the case! Serato's beat grid definatly helps (lets be honest who says they never look at the screen, its sat right in front of you!) but it's not always 100% spot on.
I'll always beatmatch by ear, and keep one side of my phones on during the mix just to be 100% sure!
blured is a funny word.

Plus with CDJ's you have waveform display, obviously Vinyl is a different mater all together.

But what happens (and maybe I missed this) if you have one speaker to monitor the pre fader music and the other to monitor the post fader music?
frank0p99 1 year ago
but if you replace your headphones with speaker they will hear all the noises from beat matching and stuff........?

I see what your trying to say but more venue's will have a half decent monitor system - if this isn't loud enough your not going to be lugging a big active speaker around to clubs!
Pretty pointless video to be honest

the whole point of using headphones is so the crowd doesn't hear the nasty sounds you make when finding your spots on the records

That sounded pretty cool actually.

I've found that Im using the headphones less due to the visual markers Serato Scratch gives you. If the little lines meet up then its in time :0)
