  • Man this movie has been redone sooooooooo many times and Tim Burton is going to make one that will come out 2013 :)))) caant wait!!! BTW great movie ;D

  • They ruined it by changing the music.

  • Such a classic. Chaney is the greatest ever.

  • @hunchbackofNDluver i'TS KNOW 211th Or 2010's Birthday But I Am Not Really Sure

  • This movie sure doesn't have sound.

  • @bloodshotclam It is a silent movie, see the date of 1923.

  • Borred

  • @aaaasweet THEN DONT WATCH!!

  • @aaaasweet Then why are you watching it you idiot?

  • Putting the latter versions aside, when comparing the 1923 silent movie with Lon Chaney Senior and the 1939 movie with Charles Laughton which one does anybody think is the best, I know it maybe unfair to compare a silent to a talk movie.

  • @jackiemickie This one is the best. This and the live action 90's one.

  • i watched this on t.v. the other night and i had tons of nightmares. now i simpley love this movie :^) thanks for uploading it

  • hight quilety

  • I love Clopin in this version. He's so cool and sinister.

  • This whole story is so sad to me :'( i need a moment.

I can not believe that people are treated that way. And it was a lot worse back then than it is today.

Seeing this sort of stuff just makes me feel so depressed

  • I had no idea he was deaf and half blind! I'm a 90's kid, raised on the disney version

  • well if you think about it.. hearing those huge bells so near may be a common reason for becoming deaf :)

  • hes deaf

  • @ismaelsbaby i know!!!!!!! me either!!!!!! disney had him looking so not scary and nice, and he was able to hear and see!!!! i guess disney tries to make things not scary for the children these days

  • How many versions does this have? It has an 20's version, 50's, 70's and 90's!

  • @Andriaccini i know!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i think they are making one this year to

  • i heard they are planning to make a new version of notre dame... has anybody heard anything more?

  • go check out Edisons Frankenstein!

    its almost a 100 years old! (1910)

  • wtf he is so old

  • wow i always thought the one guy's name was Clopar but its Clopin(pronaounced Clopan) which is why it sounded like Clopar. hmmmmm kinda like Chopin it's not prinounced Choppin but Chopan

  • I read online that Lon Chaney as a nikename. "The man with 1,000 fahces".

  • awesome Lon Chaney is a legend!

  • Comment removed

  • But always remember: Without the old ones no Disney versions!

  • thank you for sharing the earliest version of hugo classic

  • I'm not really into silent movies, I've found, but someone should really make a new Hunchback of Notre Dame. You know, like Timothy Spall as Quasimodo, Megan Fox as Esmerellda, Alan Rickman as Claude Frollo. That is if they use all well-known actors, and even less likey or advisable all English or American cast. Doesn't anyone else want to see a new accurate Hunchback movie? The book is amazing and none of the movies I've seen so far have represented it well enough.

  • i agree, i've seen basically all of the movies and though each of them conatain scenes faithful to the book none of them are entirely accurate. if you could take those scenes from each film you would have an accurate movie but i think, to make a truely faithful adaptation you would need to make a series of, so everything could be fit in. and i would happily watch it^^

  • Dimension FIlms have been planning a remake of this version of this film for a while. THey started thinking about it in 1992. March this year they began casting and production is going to begin in a year or two. Rumoured cast include Scarlet Johansson, Johnny Depp, Rachel Bilson, Salma Hayek, Ben McKenzie and Neve Campbell. I can't wait, I totally adore the story of the Hunchback of Notre Dame.

  • @xxNephilaxx im not sure who is making it, but according to IMDB, they're planning another remake in 2013

i really hope they make it as close to the book as they can :)

  • This is going to sound crazy but I want to see Tim Burton do it.

  • @minnyl34 Woah and i thought i was the only one. o.o

  • Good casting: I can see Timothy Spall as Quasimodo and Alan Rickman as Frollo. Hugo made the point over and over again that Esmeralda was a PETITE woman;

gorgeous of course, with long black hair.

  • To be honest, I dont really agree that Hugo made that point. I think his attitude towards the heroes of the book was rather neutral. Esmeralda acted as a virtuous and innocent girl : she wanted to be faithful to the young man she loved and she refused to love a priest (!) that had tried to kill Phoebus and that was threatening her with death. Her only fault was her coldness with Quasimodo ; but after all, we shouldnt forget she was just 16.

  • Yah!

    It does seem that way.

  • wow this reminds me of when i saw a silen film from 1922 on tv the other day lol I love these. Thanks for uploading

  • In the original novel, it was actually Don Claude (not Jehan) who assaulted Esmeralda and tried to murder Phoebus, but I think the censors for this movie couldn't conceive that a Roman Catholic priest would be capable of such evil - so since Jehan was already a nasty jerk in the novel, they used him instead.

  • i'm suprised if theres even that scene in this film, they didn't like sex scenes much back then.

  • this is awsome

  • Should have made it more true to the novel.

  • I've given you the 100th five star, because this film is truly a gem and warrants a thousand more. Unfortunately, I cannot give you that, but you have my deepest thanks for this treasure.

  • This is the first real silent film I've ever seen. All the others were just in cartoons whenever they had 'silent film' episodes. This is great! Is it still available today? Oh, Thanks for uploading!

  • The film is available for sale today - in fact, there is a recent special edition of this film called "The Ultimate Edition of The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and if you live in the US, it costs roughly around 20-25 dollars. It has alot of additional things on the DVD as well. I highly recommend it as well as another silent film classic (with a similar title) "The Ultimate Edition of The Phantom of the Opera" (which is based on Gaston Leroux's novel) and also starring Lon Chaney.

  • Thanks. Unfortunately I don't live in the US but if I ever see it I'll be sure to buy it. I may just start looking for the book instead, having just recently watched the Disney version and now this too. I'm really curious to see the true, original story, though I've heard it's truly a tearjerker.

  • I've only ever seen the Disney version. I hope I like this one. I may even read the book.

  • too bad

  • as u have download all these movies, cuould u please put also the hunchback of notre dame from jet lag production? this way u would be my favourite youtube downloader

  • Sorry, but I don't have this version :(

  • Wait. Was there a remake in 1939?

  • yes,

  • The makeup by Lon chaney is amazing it still holds up to todays standards!

  • Just like his faces in The Phantom of the Opera!

His right eye is still strange... But this looks like an interesting movie. Is Clopin in here?

  • I'm not sure...And I believe the strange eye is a wart near the top of his eyebross

  • i am preforming a play in my school and i am colpin!

  • that is so cool! are you playing the disney version of him with is awsome purple outfit? i had a little crush on him when i was really little :S wierd i know

  • chaney was the master of makeup. Many a time he was in pain..

  • Great film. I used to have it on DVD till a house break in :(

Beautiful music, and silent films are really able to stir the emotions at times (Metropolis anyone?)

  • Oh, yes, Metropolis is a masterpiece!

BTW notice one thing: in Metropolis the final confrontation takes place in the cathedral, Maria is ringing bells, etc. :)

  • i have this movie on dvd

  • wow this is old

  • No really?

  • the movies are magnificent, such as the oldest like these, the disney one is classical as well, as are the many musical performances of it. Yet if u truly want to see the tale of Notre Dame u must read the book, the original tale of its legend and beauty, what started it all, beginning with a mere gaze at the cathedral.

  • grandissimo lon chaney!io ho una statuetta alta 30 cm di lui in versione quasimodo che custodisco come il tesoro più grnade...ti adoro!

  • I love pretty much all the movies . . . but i feel that they adapt too much

My all-time favourite is the Musical one in french with Garou. . . look it up, it's amazing!

  • omg i never new there was a film version other than the disney one!!

    this is really weird..

  • Wtf? There's like, 5 more.

  • i just neva noticed before lol

  • The most famous, besides the disney one, is the version with Charles Laughton in 1939.

  • I'd say the 2 most famous live-action HoND movies are this one and the 1939 one...

  • IS that the one with Charles Laughlin?? If so I agree.

  • No, the 1939 one is with Charles Laughton

  • That's what I meant. I just spelled his name wrong.

  • It is not, it is based on the novel. The Disney version is from the novel. Cool right :)

  • Holy crap! He would scare the heck out of me. It isn't his looks very much, but his behavior. I do feel bad for him though.

  • I used to have nightmares of Quasimodo when I was little.

  • I watched this film with my mum, god did I cry at the end!! It really shocked and upset me, the scenes stuck with me for ages!

  • its not fair how people would make fun of people because of their disorders ....

  • i know and in some countries they still do

actually i bet in any countrie there will be somenone who is picked on for been different

    today!

  • Is this in the public domain?

  • Yes, it is

  • Thank you so much for answering!

  • i never knew the first version wasnt a talkie.

  • Lon Chaney is a genius. He made an excellent Erik/Phantom as well.

  • i was wondering why there were so many simialrities between quasimodo and erik :P

  • i saw this only once in my life - many years ago when i was a child. i was shocked. all my life i could remember scenes from it. it really shaped me.

the only difference was the music - the pics were accompanied by a powerful organ music.

  • Isn't it ironic that both Lon Chaney's versions of "Notre-Dame-de-Paris" (The Hunchback of Notre Dame) and "The Phantom of the Opera" are the most faithful film adaptions of those novels to have survived to today?

  • OMG!This is ancient!

  • Wasn't Lon Chaney also in Phantom of the Opera?

  • Yes, he was.

  • once he started to climb it got cool!!

  • Nice!

    I like old films.

  • i love this film so much

  • is it true that some footage from this film is missing?

  • This movie is great! LOLZ at the 'ZOMG DRAMATIC!' music when Jehan is on the scene!

  • I love the early movies. I've given you five stars, please check out my silent movie memorabilia vids (includes Raymond Hatton)

    when you have time.

  • Hey!!!Quasimodo is NEVER ugly!!!

  • i agree Quasi is soo sweet

  • He isn't in this version

  • YAY i love lon chaney!!

  • quasy's quite an acrobat.

  • i totally agree.

  • Can I just say that you are the shit and I love you and you're amazing.
