Man this movie has been redone sooooooooo many times and Tim Burton is going to make one that will come out 2013 :)))) caant wait!!! BTW great movie ;D
Putting the latter versions aside, when comparing the 1923 silent movie with Lon Chaney Senior and the 1939 movie with Charles Laughton which one does anybody think is the best, I know it maybe unfair to compare a silent to a talk movie.
@ismaelsbaby i know!!!!!!! me either!!!!!! disney had him looking so not scary and nice, and he was able to hear and see!!!! i guess disney tries to make things not scary for the children these days
wow i always thought the one guy's name was Clopar but its Clopin(pronaounced Clopan) which is why it sounded like Clopar. hmmmmm kinda like Chopin it's not prinounced Choppin but Chopan
I'm not really into silent movies, I've found, but someone should really make a new Hunchback of Notre Dame. You know, like Timothy Spall as Quasimodo, Megan Fox as Esmerellda, Alan Rickman as Claude Frollo. That is if they use all well-known actors, and even less likey or advisable all English or American cast. Doesn't anyone else want to see a new accurate Hunchback movie? The book is amazing and none of the movies I've seen so far have represented it well enough.
i agree, i've seen basically all of the movies and though each of them conatain scenes faithful to the book none of them are entirely accurate. if you could take those scenes from each film you would have an accurate movie but i think, to make a truely faithful adaptation you would need to make a series of, so everything could be fit in. and i would happily watch it^^
Dimension FIlms have been planning a remake of this version of this film for a while. THey started thinking about it in 1992. March this year they began casting and production is going to begin in a year or two. Rumoured cast include Scarlet Johansson, Johnny Depp, Rachel Bilson, Salma Hayek, Ben McKenzie and Neve Campbell. I can't wait, I totally adore the story of the Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Good casting: I can see Timothy Spall as Quasimodo and Alan Rickman as Frollo. Hugo made the point over and over again that Esmeralda was a PETITE woman;
To be honest, I dont really agree that Hugo made that point. I think his attitude towards the heroes of the book was rather neutral. Esmeralda acted as a virtuous and innocent girl : she wanted to be faithful to the young man she loved and she refused to love a priest (!) that had tried to kill Phoebus and that was threatening her with death. Her only fault was her coldness with Quasimodo ; but after all, we shouldnt forget she was just 16.
In the original novel, it was actually Don Claude (not Jehan) who assaulted Esmeralda and tried to murder Phoebus, but I think the censors for this movie couldn't conceive that a Roman Catholic priest would be capable of such evil - so since Jehan was already a nasty jerk in the novel, they used him instead.
I've given you the 100th five star, because this film is truly a gem and warrants a thousand more. Unfortunately, I cannot give you that, but you have my deepest thanks for this treasure.
This is the first real silent film I've ever seen. All the others were just in cartoons whenever they had 'silent film' episodes. This is great! Is it still available today? Oh, Thanks for uploading!
The film is available for sale today - in fact, there is a recent special edition of this film called "The Ultimate Edition of The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and if you live in the US, it costs roughly around 20-25 dollars. It has alot of additional things on the DVD as well. I highly recommend it as well as another silent film classic (with a similar title) "The Ultimate Edition of The Phantom of the Opera" (which is based on Gaston Leroux's novel) and also starring Lon Chaney.
Thanks. Unfortunately I don't live in the US but if I ever see it I'll be sure to buy it. I may just start looking for the book instead, having just recently watched the Disney version and now this too. I'm really curious to see the true, original story, though I've heard it's truly a tearjerker.

What if the Hunchback of Notre Dame and the Phantom of the Opera were both Aliens? Could there be elements of truth in both of these stories...where aliens would fit? Just a thought.
that is so cool! are you playing the disney version of him with is awsome purple outfit? i had a little crush on him when i was really little :S wierd i know
the movies are magnificent, such as the oldest like these, the disney one is classical as well, as are the many musical performances of it. Yet if u truly want to see the tale of Notre Dame u must read the book, the original tale of its legend and beauty, what started it all, beginning with a mere gaze at the cathedral.
Isn't it ironic that both Lon Chaney's versions of "Notre-Dame-de-Paris" (The Hunchback of Notre Dame) and "The Phantom of the Opera" are the most faithful film adaptions of those novels to have survived to today?
