I was in Rigoletto with Louis when he was over 70 years old. He voice was strong and beautiful. He was a kind and generous colleague. I have not heard ONE baritone of his caliber singing today.
Together with Mateo Managuerra, one of the most underrated and (unfortunately) largely forgotten baritones of the 70's an 80's. Simply wonderful! Compare this to what's singing these roles nowadays. Dimitri Hvor., Dwayne Croft, Thomas Hampson..in this rep. ??!!...what a joke.
Simply fabulous! From a technique standpoint, this is pretty well perfect. I heard his Rodrigo live at the Met when he was considered past his prime. He was awesome and current Rodrigo's I've heard there live like Hvor. and Croft aren't even in the same ball park as him supposedly past his prime.
Louis Quilico stands with the legendary voices of the past, Leonard Warren, Bastianini etc... It was a combination of tecknique, beauty and passion. His spirit lives on.
I only heard him on records and he did have very rich powerful voice and you are right about the current crop of baritones. Even his son louis cannot hold a candle to the dramatic weight his father's voice had!
Yes, I knew you meant Gino. Though he's a nice singer, you're right, he's far from the caliber of voice that his father had. Though, not many have that caliber.
An exemplary interpretation. Fine technique and a voice that is infinitely pleasurable to listen to. Thank you for posting!

I love Louis, I had an opportunity to sing with him several times including one of his last Rigolettos in 1994,
Here I posted his very last concert in Montreal before he went to a deadly surgery.
