What meryl is saying is somewhat related to her unsuccessful audition for Dino De Laurentiis for the leading role in kingkong. De Laurentiis commented to his son in italian, :SHE'S UGLY. why did you bring me THIS THING?" and was shocked when meryl replied in fluent italian.

She makes a very good point, but I think that personality plays a part into how an actor serves the story. Can they be willing to explore and channel something if they themselves cannot personally see themselves in a role? Streep can channel anything, but she doesn't allow any personality to trickle into her performances. Personality isn't the weapon to a good performance, it is the fuel.
