If you don't have this feature, it means your Carrier (e.x. ATnT) doesn't support that feature.

i just tried it on my G1 and im not rooted, it worked completely fine. i downloaded beautiful widgets andf it works fine, full version. i would recommend doing this for everyone i used all my money paying for this G1 and other stuff. So i don't have any left for the app market.
