  • Wow, this is so beautiful. I was looking for the Randy Newman original, but I think I like this one just as much.

  • Why do people feel the need to state their age? -.-

  • @ahhhndy im 12 and love this music

  • @gramule Good for you! :D

  • @ahhhndy ta mate. taken in the spirit it was meant to be taken. greetings from across the pond.

  • I'm 15 and I think Judy Collins rocks... and she's so beautiful

  • UB40 did a great version..

  • i know it sounds cruel and evil, but this song reminds me of the place i grew up, Detroit is not what i remember it. judy has one of those voices that help guide you on your own personal voyages, beautiful yet haunting song

  • beautiful voice

  • I've always loved Judy, I made a clip for another band you may remember called Bread, ' Diary" check it out . youtube.com/watch?v=uhlYY-CxRAM

  • A friend of mine was a flight attendant for United. Judy Collins was on the plane, and my friend told her that she was a fan. Judy asked her if she wanted to see her in concert in San Francisco, where the plane was to land. At 7:45 PM, my friend knocked on the side, alley, door of the auditorium, and Judy was there to let her in. She took her to a chair in the wings behind the curtain, and let her watch her performance from the stage.

  • Ms, Collins' greatest conribution was facilitating Leonard Cohen's introduction to the North American public. AND THAT IS A LEGACY ONE SHOULD HONOR. Aside from that, the rest is palaver. And what does her Highness want to eat tonight? And is it properly prepared? (Those who have been with her will understand).

  • I may get torn apart for this, but I prefer Katie Melua's version. It seems to be more emotional behind the words.

  • @Elriaen - no ripping because it's just a matter of taste. But KM's breathy, note-sliding, semi-jazz vocals don't equal genuine emotion; it's just the way the record companies have convinced today's mass audience that songs convey feeling. Collins and her generation of singers allow the lyric to create the emotion, making the song the central point of attention - not the singer, as Melua and that type of singer do.

  • @sensei48 Your opinion, expressed brilliantly. I stick to my own, though I am less eloquent. I agree to disagree with you. :)

  • @Elriaen - Nicely said! I just wanted to offer you another way of looking at it. And to think that people say that you can't have a civil conversation/disagreement on YouTube! :)

  • @sensei48 Judy was/is so good at emotional readings of songs like this. It was her original song, Randy recorded it later. Bette Midler used it in Beaches, but it got overshadowed by the other Randy Newman hit "Wind Beneath My Wings". Poignant lyrics and haunting melody need no acrobatics to get the message across. This was a time when the music was allowed to speak for itself. Judy's stature and presentation enhance the desolation of the lyric. Beautiful.

  • @marchesano - As much as I agree with your sentiments, m. - the song was in fact written by Randy Newman, who holds the copyright.

  • @sensei48 I know it was a Randy Newman song. I was perhaps not clear. But Judy did the first recording.

  • @marchesano Jeff Silbar and Larry Henley wrote "Wind Beneath My Wings"

  • @marchesano also Randy Newman wrote "I Think It's Going To Rain Today", not Judy Colllins

  • She is so beautiful, which somehow enhances the sadness of the song. You're right -- she nails it.

  • just terrific...thanks for posting. The song's very simplicity makes it both great and a difficult one to sing and she nails it .

  • Too showbiz, too clear, too perfect. I've got nothing against reinterpretation in principle, but I really think that this tune calls for a numb, exhausted, mumbled vocal delivery, y'know? It's a foggy, miserable sulk of a song, and it can be the saddest thing you've ever heard when performed right, but it seems like the effect is ruined by turning it into an anthemic declaration from the mountaintops. I think.

  • What sincerity and true elegance...I wish there were more artist/singers like her today...Jaya Dixit Nag Peralta

  • @dhyanjayapushpanjali

    well put :)

  • How I love this song.... so beautiful!

  • She is just pure magic. I'm at a loss for words; this rendition blows Ms. Midler's right out of the water...

  • Suite (Sweet) Judy Blue Eyes - CSNY.

  • Fabulous.....I miss real talent . I actuallly remember seeing her on the Smothers Brothers show....

  • My God, the way she sings this song is so telling a story! Wow!

  • Judy wouldn't fit into today's mix of incredible shallowness. There's not another Judy Collins visible on the music scene today . . . fortunately this great woman is still alive and still contributing. THank you Judy Collins.

  • Was looking @ some of the postings here -gee, everybody has their own problems/issues, but can't you appreciate this great woman for her talent & artistry..? I don't care to hear about whether she was alcoholic, etc.. I just want to hear her wonderful voice!

  • thank you so much for posting this..i love her version of this..truly beautiful..

  • JUST HAS SUCH GREAT LOOKING LEGS HERE!!!! AND SHE IS GORGEOUS TOO!!!!!

  • yes it rained today hahahahaha.

  • One of most beautiful female voices EVER. Love Judy.

  • @2old2Rock oh you're the OP!!!!! First off, thanks........glad you said it, saved me a few keystrokes......common sense, people!!!!!!!! I don't have your ears, you don't have mine!!!!!! Personally, I haven't heard a bad version of this song yet, and my buddy just posted a live RN version.....I know that song from BEACHES!!!!! Bette covered that!!!!! So I just did a YTube search.......wow, so many!!!!!!

  • It's too bad that we can't have a new trend and be Judy or Bette rolled instead of "RICK ROLLED".

  • How vulgar society has become. A lovely song by a lovely woman and people have, for their own sick and toxic reasons, make comments that have no place anywhere. Beautiful music with such a powerful message.

  • Bwoken vindows.

  • @gnamp yawn

  • @gramule gwamule yawwnth

  • @gnamp one of the most talented, creative, understated and pure spirited people ever. take note.....'twenty five years to grow a tree, one hour to chop it down'.....hope this helps.

  • @gramule she wasn't a very nice person.

  • @gnamp What, Judy? First off, she's still alive, and second off, she's a sweetheart. She mentors younger singers now.

  • @SpamWarrior3000 First off, nobody said she's dead. She may be perfectly nice now, but she wasn't. I didn't want to have to point this out but. She certainly 'was' a raging, self-obsessed alcoholic who drove her son to suicide. But boy, what a voice.

  • @gnamp The 'was' confused me a little there, sorry. She did used to be an alcoholic (and then a bulimic), but her son committed suicide long after she'd sobered up--he was clinically depressed, as was her father, I believe.

  • @SpamWarrior3000 I won't argue with you. You clearly know her better than I do.

  • @gnamp Whoa, whoa, I'm not trying to argue with you. I'm just saying what I've read from her and other people who've known her. She's never denied her alcoholism or her bulimia, and more people than just her knew her son was clinically depressed. I'm not trying to say she's a saint or anything.

  • @SpamWarrior3000 I think I may have got her all wrong.

  • @gnamp She definitely pulled her share of screw-ups as a young woman, but her contemporaries all have nothing but nice things to say about her, and she's still friends with all the ones who are still alive. (Granted, they all sort of had a screw-up club going on for a while in the late 60's, but hey. Musicians. They're famous for it.) :)

  • @gnamp i respect you, your honesty

  • @gnamp very, very difficult to believe. proof needed, not just air-headed gossip. hope this helps

  • what an amazing talent, i cant believe this is almost 43 years ago, judy is so beautiful, i must say reading the other text's , bette midlers version is amazing as well, i enjoy both...thats the beauty of music and art, you can enjoy it all and cherish what it brings into your life.. human kindness is overflowing-what an amazing line, peace to everyone

  • 2old2Rock you are dead on. I am only 24 but I grew up listening to Judy Collin's version. The way she makes a song her own is truly unique and should not be forgotten. I love Bette Middler and Judy Collins equally but when it comes to versions of the song Judy takes the cake. Bette Middler is an amazing artist and her version is very good as well. I still have to go with Judy. Thank you I enjoyed this video.

  • I LOVE THIS SONG !!!

  • what dignity...we have lost so much as a culture...let's get it back!

  • It is just another version of a beautyful song. I've just discovered it and I think it is

very sad and very beautyful. Milder is a little bit lighter on that song.

There is only one I really can't stand and thats the one from Katie Melua...just boring. Saw her once on stage and I was sedated after three songs.

  • Sweet Judy Blue Eyes

  • Tom Northcott nailed this one.

  • Judy Collins is regal.

  • You are beautiful and have the voice of an angel.

  • - There were no girls-gone-wild videos.

    - There were no reports of girls beating each other.

Instead the likes of this beautiful & gentle woman was more liberation and self-realization than all the feminist shouting and demanding achieved.

Such a loss to women, who were sold a false bill of goods with the promise their lives would be great if they could just have more money or a position at a company. Lost has been the true power that comes with loving, kindness and grace as once known..

  • Beautiful song. Beautiful singer.

  • Exquisite, no other word for it. Judy Collins, you are a national treasure!

  • Better than most...better than we deserve

  • Love this version. Also love Cass Elliot and Dusty Springfield's takes too.

  • @TRAVISJAMES03 i can't find any mama cass version. if you know where to get it, let me know.

  • @AdamG319 Same here

  • I ache from memories. Thank you for this.

  • I've just rediscovered this song after a 42 year gap.......saw it on TV in the 60's, never knew who sang it, or what the song was.....I've had Judy's voice in my head all this time and joy of joys, found it by chance this morning..........a gorgeous song indeed!

  • I like UB40, so I'll have to check that version out...but in all fairness, she's singing it the way the writer intened it to be.

  • I love Dusty's version, too; I'm listening to it on Rhapsody right now.

  • great song..doesnt Judy look lovely, she is always able to affect me with that pure sweet voice.

  • I love this song, it reminds me of abandoned places like old parks that are now in ruins and how I feel

  • @nhoverhaulinfan2

but then, there's Judy's interpretation of 'Chelsea Morning'. Keep smiling and be sunny.

  • @nhoverhaulinfan2 It reminds me of a sad sad love affair at the point when you know its over as you stand alone reflecting...love is kind, love is cruel, love is blind

  • this is great, but i love Dusty Springfield's version!

  • I think Dusty Springfield understood the lyrics of this better than anybody - she said it was her favourite song at one point.

Judy Collins has a great clear, strong voice but she's almost too steely for this song. Dusty Springfield's soft, more vulnerable take does it for me.

  • Hmnm..gotta check that out..

  • I am familiar with Randy Newman's songwriting career. It was my impression that you thought somebody else recorded the song before Judy, like Bette Midler, who did decades after Judy. Thanks for writing back. These old Judy videos are amazing. She was a frequent guest on The Smothers Brothers Show.

  • judy was the first to record this song, 1966. In My Life album. You can look it up.

  • It's true that Judy was the first to record this song, but it was written, arranged, and composed by Randy Newman! I did look it up! Randy Newman was a song composer for others before he started recording his own songs! By the way Judy's version is much better than Randy's ha!!

  • Randy released his version on his first LP on Reprise, which I bought as a remainder and treasure to this day. It is a poignant, moving rendition-every bit as good as Judy's cover.

  • heavenly voice.

  • What a sad, tragic moment in our national life! Meanless war in Vietham, wasting a geneartion for nothing. People had to grow up fast and either do what their governemt told them to do or stand and be outlaws. No matter what you did, it was tragic.

  • I grew up then. To be honest, I have always considered a phrase like "wasting a generation" to be WAY over the top. Especially if you use it in referance to the war. I am willing to bet that an equal or greater number lives were fucked up forever at that time from drug use. Look at it like this, ihn a 10 year period it is likely tens of thousands of young people will die in traffic accidents. Odd, i never hear "a wasted generation" used for that.

  • I agree with you, 56Edify.

  • @TedMichaelMorgan

    :(

    so sad ... true.

  • @TedMichaelMorgan

I was in Nam and I had the freakin time of my life

  • @TedMichaelMorgan as if its any differant today? More of the same waste of life almost 50 years later.

  • @TedMichaelMorgan meaningless

  • @TedMichaelMorgan meaningless war

  • I like Judy's singing, but I think Norah Jones sings this song better.

  • Wasn't this orgianally sing by bette midler? I like bette's better

  • It is a Randy Newman song

  • randy newman

  • This is such a beautiful song and Judy is such a beautiful performer ... I'm so glad that I found this.

  • This is the wrong place for this but I can't resist. Your handle says it all. If there were a Jesus, he certainly wouldn't hate Obama. Smallminded people like you hate, I don't even hate Bush even though I think he was badly misguided. As for Judy's voice, are you tone deaf?

  • Oh wilytone, don't let JHO affect you. I've visited his/her page ... it's all hate for everyone. He/she doesn't know Jesus.

"Beloved let us love one another. For love is of God and everyone that loveth is born of God and knoweth God. He that loveth not, knoweth not God, for God is Love." 1 John 4:7-8

I know that God loves Obama. And he must love me and you. He led us to this site to enjoy such simple loveliness.

    Peace!

  • There's nothing simple about this song. It's a religious hymn to loneliness.

  • If you can find the album this is from, "In My life" There's not a bad song on it.

  • true, true, true. sweet memories of our youth. sigh, a heavy sigh.

  • Elegant, beautiful and heartfelt. Powerful and without schmaltz.

  • I have never heard this Randy Newman tune, beautiful! And it needs to be heard a lot in this time of human conflict. Nice job as always by Judy.

  • Don't forget about UB40 version

    watch?v=1wZdSYPi9qI

    very specific one

  • Randy Newman. Circa 1966. Same year I was born.

  • Her voice is beautiful and her singing is so unaffected. That's not the case with most of the singers on American Idol.

  • True, simpler times then, simpler styles too. Wonderful message as well.

  • Randy Newman wrote this song.

  • Didn't Micky Newbury write this?

  • Kenrew,

Good, but not as good as Barbara Dickson's

    version.

  • This album ( In My Life) made such an impression on me , I think I was 15 ! My friends brother sent a real to real tape home from Vietnam ,we would listen to it everyday after school !

  • It's really a church hymn (chorale) with a disenchanted lyric that is very appealing to teenagers. I know it worked for me in 1968. Makes a lovely bookend with Donovan's "Sunny Goodge Street" (also on her album "In My Life").

  • No no no! Punk Rock! not satanic metal head noise...Ya know, Ramones etc...

  • I want to do a punk version of this song. Kinda like what Mike Ness did with Ring of fire.

  • Why destroy beauty with the vile satanism of punk

  • Your foolish, SATAN, c'mon.

  • No I'm not foolish at all . Rock music is evil , with punk just another variation of that same evil . You can't see this because you're blind .

  • Or maybe you're just stupid, 123strauss.

  • Or maybe I'm not , and you probably are .

  • real mature. gosh

  • And yet , so true !

  • how old r u? let me answer that. ur 2.

  • How I wish .

  • Or maybe you are

  • I think she has one of the most naturally beautiful voices I've ever heard. No need to overlay it with "interpretation". She lets the music speak for itsefl - and that's a true artist!

  • It just makes me sick that this type of artist isn't being promoted these days. Instead, we get no talent Jessica Simpson, the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, etc.

  • Norah Jones did a superb version of this song at the Katrina benefit. You can't call her an unknown...

  • And bette midler too! I love her version

  • @stillwaterguy04 Take some comfort in the fact that you can still find her stuff at any decent store, especially the album "Wildfowers". And a hundred years from now people will STILL know who she was. The no talent ones you listed at the end of your comment will not even be a footnote in the history of great music.

  • @stillwaterguy04 Oh SOOOOOOOOOOOO Right. Amen brother

  • You've hit the nail on the head. Naturally beautiful voice. Unforced, no need to interpret. Native intelligence and sensitivity pour out when she opens her mouth. A truly gifted musician.

  • 1. Randy Newman's original version of this masterpiece as released on his debut album in 1968

    2. Newman

    3. Ditto

    4. Same

    5. RN

    8. Judy Collins -- she sings it like it means something, she sings it for a reason

    9. Every other professional on YouTube -- good to great musicians performing a great song

    10. Everyone else on YouTube or in the real world -- people with the good taste to like or love this song

    100. People who have never heard this song

    999. People who think this is a bad song

  • I saw Judy last night in marin county california with Leo Kotke. She performed an excellent song abut the firemen of 9/11.

  • wow. i knew her songs, but never her. I'm so glad she's still performing! mesmerizing.

  • Just beautiful, I love this version

  • Dusty's version is my personal favorite, though this is also great. Still have questions about the actual meaning of the lyrics. It's still a bit of a mystery to me...

  • Given the oeuvre of Randy Newman (the composer) the lyrics are less puzzling than you may imagine. Newman's work is dripping irony. Each stanza begins with a painful image, portrayed at varying levels of ambiguity: then the punch line, also ambiguous. No syrup. Strictly no syrup. A sentimentality free zone layered with, yes, sentiment but not with even a jot of sentimentality. What 'signs implore me' to do can be patronizing. Hear the irony? I think it's going to rain today.

  • Check out Tony Rice' version.

  • Again, a tune that was pretty much meant for Judy to sing. I'd say this is the equal of what she recorded on "In My Life". Shocking to realize the LP came out 42 yrs ago, come November....

  • Such a beautifully written song, im yet to find a version i dont like! Dusty still remains my favourite though.......

  • Thank you video poster, Judy and Randy.

There is much beauty in this world, evidenced by this clip and the artistry and voice of Judy Collins. The words are both sad and beautiful.

They sure don't make these variety shows like they used to, do they?

  • in the 60's WBAI (alternative music radio station in NYC, wee hours of the morning) played this song...ok... then it played it again...ok.... and again....over 20 times in succession....then it was stopped, abruptly, in the middle....the DJ said he was gonna play it until someone called the station and told him to stop playing it.... as a nightcap, when the show signed off, the DJ played it, 3 more times!! what a hoot!

  • With Randy Newman singing his own song, peacefullycaffeinate has posted the definitive version of this miniature masterpiece of a song. Still, I really like Judy's covers, and this is easier to listen to--not as much pathos. If you like it (and I do), Judy's voice is a tough habit to break (so I won't break it).

  • I must've played this song a hundred times or more. Judy Collins was one of my favorite singers as a teen, and her music is still timeless. Thanks for sharing this video. I'd never seen this before.

  • My personal favorite is Val Kilmers version. Its on his myspace and its understated and under rated. Check it out!

  • anyone happen to know the year this was?

  • lol.

    I like this video.

  • Wow - you cool people who can't think up real cusses so just swear - nice one.

  • Great clip...thanks for posting...

  • " I guess music like beauty is in the eye ie or ear of the beholder, in it's simplicity this is most beautiful song, and Miss Collins voice is a gift from God"

  • Boring interpretation....Bette Midler can sing this and give you goose pimples!!!

  • Bette's version is okay, but Judy Collins' reading of this song is astoundingly beautiful.

  • That's exactly right!! She sounds like she IS reading it, while Bette's is beautifully sung!!

  • I think you'd better take the cotton balls out of your ears.

  • The only thing that's true is that all your taste is in your mouth.

  • And you must have some real "issues" if you take some horrendous offense at my statement that I simply prefer Judy Collins' version of this song over Bette Midler's (whom I also happen to like, by the way). On your way to Vegas, stop at your shrink's office and get your meds adjusted. I think you're overdue.

  • I'm a bit unsure as to what you'd hoped to accomplish by clicking onto a performance, taking a swipe at the artist, and then getting defensive when fans of said performance/artist take issue with your comments. Obviously, 95 percent of those clicking onto this are doing so because they enjoy Judy Collins' recording of this song, so it shouldn't be such a surprise to you that someone would take offense at your remarks.

  • Go fuck yourself up the ass...or better yet, you're probably letting someone else do thar right now.

  • Fuck you pussy ass mother fucker!! At least that would mean I get some, not some loner pansy dude with the hots for Judy Collins...LOL...you are fucking pathetic!!! And I don't get it...mthivier..does it stand for "empty HIV-er"???? I guess you infected mother fucker!! Die in hell!!

  • Impressive...I'll bet you stayed up all night thinking of that one.

  • dvd- can you contribute something aside from insult and instigation? what is your point?? art is subjective anyhow. you prefer another version. i love collins, but love simone's version. so what? i dont think people came here to find out my preferences<<<key word

  • I don't care about your preference...any type!! That's your shit...I was just responding to mthivier who called me out.

  • dvd- yeah, that's my point. they don't care about yours either...
