  • @SKINDEEPTATT2S

Perhaps you're right and a 10 year old could have made a better job of editing this film? I thought the 14 year olds that actually cut this film togther did a really good job. This was an educational project and their contribution went towards a GCSE. So they, unlike you, have at least one qualification...

  • tbh a good film but some ov these comments are a bit harsh iv lived in hemsworth my whole life and never really had a problem with it also the kids u used arnt the best to be making this presenation i kn ow a few of em n they r on drugs, i love hemswe

orth will never move n mi misses moved from nottingly, if wer that bad y do wh have 5 car homes in this little town

  • i live up westendd its what they call home lol well i thinks its fuckin mint haha

  • I lived in Hemsworth for a number of years in the 80's, attended St Helens & Hemworth High, loved the place had a gr8 childhood. Why was it not better balanced and showed the Big Park!!!!!

Mile tunnel was awesome back then

  • Hemsworth NICE?? wtf i lived there for 3 years and got the hell out of there its full of druggies and low life bastards who can't be arsed to get a job the job center q is larger than those at alton towers!!!

  • I was one of the lucky ones..my parents and I moved to Blackpool in 1998!

Did you film this in a council estate by any chance? It's full of chavs!

Thanks for making my mins up...I will never bring my children to Hemsworth to visit family.

I lived on Holly Bank by the way opposite Hemsworth High School Field...have those houses gone now?

  • I sad to see Hemsworth as it is today, i lived at no 18 Ashfield road in 1965 when it was first built, we came from Scotland only to return a year later because of we were homesick but during that spell i remember how nice it was, and the people who were very friendly and tried to make us welcome,i remember the picture house and the outdoor market i hope the town makes a recovery in the next few years and with my best wishes

  • thank god its been knocked down. i desperately want to leave this place and will be doing so asap

  • Hemsworth is pretty shit tbh considering there is nothing to do but its not as bad as some people make it out to be!

  • its not facilitys the kids want its a kick up the arse and being made to get a job. i was made to get 1 at kinsley dog track working 4-5 nights a week parading greyhounds when i was 10 to 16 years to make my pocket money up. ended up earning over £100 a week in tips ect. i never had time to be harrassing old people and doing drugs so im glad i was working to keep me away from all that crap.

  • Yeh cos theres thousands of jobs round here... why you think it got like this int first place? Cos theres no fucking work, which equals no money which equals lower standard of living

    Idiot

  • there is loads of jobz, plenty of factories in south kirkby and south elmsall but people are too lazy to travel five minutes on the bus. at the end of the day the mines shut years ago so why dont people get off they're arses and make a proper living instead of whinging about what they havent got.

  • i lived there for 25 years there was nothing wrong with top street till they started moving smack heads in - thats when i moved away. wasnt letting my kids growing up among that. i dont think the council will even do anything with the land either no matter what they promise, all council money gets spent in south kirby. thats a tip as well.

  • they have started knockin what we call west end bronx down now though but wen i bin past a seen kids up on the roofs a houses tht are in this vid.

  • I notice none of the interviewees talk about creating places for them to work in the future. I remember going to school at West End Middle, the area wasn't bad at all then (in the 80s). Not good either, but not that bad.

  • The reason Hemsworth started getting bad in the 90's is because Margaret Thatcher closed the coal mines cos she could purchase cole cheaper from foreign countries. A selfish move which would benefit the upper and middle classes but devastate the lower classes which is all politicians seem to do. We need a PM who was brought up in a lower class environment because only they know the true problems of this country. You never see John Trickett walking around the west end do you...

  • I think that's the point of the film. Most of the young people interviewed wanted the West End to be pulled down, because of the associated problems. We spent days researching and mapping local provision for young people and there just wasn't any...

  • Maybe the films an accurate picture of one part of Hemsworth but thats as far as it goes.

What about Lowfields, Woodlands, little Hemsworth and all the other nice parts that make up Hemsworth?

  • I think people are focusing on the negatives a little too much. Most of the film took place in the West End, which, from what I understand, has now gone. There are some really nice, picturesque areas around Hemsworth, but I still think the town needs more facilities for young people...

  • Hemsworth and the area around it was recently one of the most deprived areas in the european union, a large part of Hemsworth is made up of the West End and Scotch estate which is almost as bad as the west end so people are bound to perceive Hemsworth as a rough place

  • Also i think the council has gone around it in the wrong way. Moving people from deprived estates might help the problem in short term but in the long run all it is doing is moving the problem elsewhere. It's obvious the councils decisons are selfish and not beneficial to the residents. People who owned houses here were told they had no choice but to sell up for a price no where near the valuation of the house they paid for with years of hard work.

  • The Scotch Estate is nothing like the West End was. I've lived here most of my life and it's a lovely place to be, quiet, no trouble and certainly not a drug haven!!!

  • Are you joking most drug dealers in Hemsworth live down the scotch estate

  • West End Aint That Bad Now Most Of The Terraces Are Down

  • Hemsworth's a rate place get thi sen to tav couldnt find a friendlier bunch.lol. just make sure u got stain remover to get blood off clothes next day.

  • hey up,i woz born in hemsworth then moved darn t london after miners strike, just as i left home hemsworth wont a bad place to live then, most folk had jobs(mostly at pit)the woz no drugs arand npubs n workin mens clubs were booming, tha could have rate neet round hemsworth, but now the town is dying on its feet, its become a run darn legacy of thatchers boom n bust policies, its not only hemsworth tho,its nationwide.theres been too much shit allowed into country, its the country thats finished as well

  • Jeesh make us look like a shithole next time. Oh and theres more to hemsworth than West End. Were i live its nowt like that.

  • Its not just cos of the mining situation its the fact they moved loads of smakheads and scum into Hemsworth and its gone down since, Kids ant got owt 2 do, Young girls are gettin pregnant for council houses, theres no jobs and its a depressing place.

I wish it was a better nicer place but unfortunatly its built a reputation as a shit tip with no hope.

Apart from that its a great honest insight!

    Good work!

  • Thanks for that. I hope that the kids will get some additional facilities as a result of the regeneration program.

  • Its a shame to see ex mining places like these go down the pan but when the pit went so did the spirit i know where i live outwood just north of Wakefiled the villiage use to come under Lofthouse pit long gone82 was the year it shut 84 flattened but what can u do well nice to see video anyway see vi

  • Yeah it's a real shame. A lot of young people aren't aware of the importance that the mines had upon communities. I was pleased that this group knew about their heritage...

  • "Bomb It"

  • i live in hemsworth an it not as bad as it looks that what it shows is west end the rubbish part of hemsworth it a great town an i like hemsworth even tho it small

  • oh my gawd jack felstead alex booth now them ye ye m8 gerr all vem dirty bag heads art spesh tony ingram n jay enderson Nobz m8 belive

  • oh right its just your name sound's so familiar. How did you hear about hemsworth anyway

  • Marked as spam

I was commissioned by an Arts organisation to make a film looking at how young people felt about it as a place, so worked with Hemsworth Community College to find some kids. Did some research on the East End and realised the best thing to do was to just let the kids talk...

  • @CraigLawson, clearly you were looking at only certain amount of kids and only certain amount of the area. I have lived in Hemsworth since birth and whilst there are not too many things to do in the area, I love this town greatly. Regretfully, I have to say that I agree with some of the comments on here which say that it has only gone downhill since the council started putting the underclass people into local housing.

  • i think we went to hemsworth high school together in Ian "BRAB" Bradbury

  • Sorry, but I'm originally from Huddersfield and went to school there. The only time I've been to Hemsworth was last year to make this film...

  • no South Emlsall you?

  • I actually live in Leeds. I made the film as part of an educational project last year.

  • 2.23 the house at the far left is my old one

  • Do you still live in Hemsworth?

  • if you look over the kids right shoulder or at the left of the screen as we look at it that is my old house (2.02)

  • goodun lads

  • Thanks!

  • im in tht video

  • Is that Jaimie or Jack?

  • jamie

  • Wow, Hemsworth has changed since I went to the high school there in the eighties.

  • Yeah it's a shame, but, sadly, not uncommon in ex-colliery towns. Most of this was shot in and around the West End, which as you can see, is in desperate need of regeneration.
