@LastManStanding37 nice idea re backwards compatible but I have all 3 main systems, i7 pc, ps3 and xbox. pc for work, xbox for play ( sit on sofa with 40inch tv and dolby 5.1 surround ) and ps3 for what its best at - a blu ray player. have you upgraded your pc in the last 5 years? my xbox hasnt need one . . .

i just use a dazzel DVC-170 with a s-video cable, it records in 720p easily and smoothly. they dont make that model anymore but i think you can still get s-video dazzels.

1080i & 1080p are two HD video modes which are both 1920x1080 in terms of resolution but the difference is that 1080i uses interlace scanning and 1080p uses progressive scanning. The reason why progressive is better than interlace scanning is because it eliminates visual artifacts of interlaced video. Interlaced video would have to be deinterlaced in order to playback on progressive HDTVs or monitors. So in short, 720p (a lower resolution) is friendlier than 1080i but 1080p is better than both.

@randomaussie3 best free audio editing software is probably "Audacity". im not so sure about free video editing softwares. but the paid ones, the Sony Vegas series and/or the After Effect series (Adobe) should do the job well.
