This will always be my favorite fight scene if not perhaps favorite scene in the entire saga. The emotion is so high and music score is perfect! It's such a lesson in that sometimes simple is better. There's no over the top fighting, explosions or fancy moves. Just pure simple emotion and you feel ever second of it.
@notenufdaka vader was never that good in swordfight, he lost his arms and legs so depuite tecnology it wasn't the same, even the manipulation over force, anakin may have been a prodigy of the force, but his mechanical dependence balanced him... and luke enraged meant he fought with the advantage that siths use in fight... emotion, anger, etc, that makes you stronger, Luke only realised he was following the path to the darkside in the end when vader fell and he saw both had lost he's right hand.
luke won because vader tripped, he was also old and didn t have the stamina he once had, but think about the other outcome, if vader won then luke was not worthy of being a sith so he would have died
The new SW movies suck compared to this one. This is my absolutely fav of all six, a true masterpiece that every man with love for fantasy and Science Fiction MUST watch!
Completely agree. Best scene in the saga. And I definitely got chills - for the whole of it. And who cares if their technique of lightsaber fighting was less advanced back when they made this, than for the prequel trilogy? Fill that part in with your imagination, and look at the story and the acting, because it is brilliant. And listen to the music. Yeah... Chills, definitely.
Luke looks like a blind-folded nine year old swinging at a piñata when he uses the lightsaber. It's pretty annoying after having seen how skilled Anakin was in episode 3, that Luke can kick his ass after having "trained" for two months.
Whatever, I was being sarcastic when I said, "two months". Either way, it's a continuity error. Count Dooku, Sidious, & Yoda were still kicking ass as old men, so why can't Vader? I know Vader's crippled, but still. He's the chosen one with 40 years of experience behind him. He should be able to handle a rookie, unless he subconsciously is taking it easy on Luke out of sentimental feelings.
@JP888481 The sentimentality may be part of it, also Luke was enraged by the dark side, remember how powerful Anakin became when he started using his anger? But losing all his limbs cut his power by at least half, Luke is just as powerful as Ani in the force and the only reason he beat him here was because he used the dark side emotions
Hey, fanboys, I grew up with the 1997 special edition since I was born in 1994, and if it wasn't for that, I wouldn't have become a star wars fan. And, to be honest, the CG worked great for the action scenes, but it sucked for everything else, and I prefer the new end song over the original, but I still want Sebastian Shaw, I don't want Hayden Christensen. I also still want Han to shoot first, and not greedo.
@Ladi3sman217roadbloc On the soundtrack I have, this is at the fifth minute of a 10-minute track called "The Battle Of Endor II (Leia Is Wounded - The Duel Begins & Overtaking The Bunker & The Dark Side Beckons & The Emperor's Death)"
Cherish this scene! It won't be long before Lucas releases a version where Vader is dubbed by Hayden Christiansen and the fight is dragged for 10 minutes with 100% use of cgi models and backgrounds.
hmmm episode 4-6 lightsaber fights more aggresive n straight foward episode 1-3 lightsaber fights more graceful and fast on a side night i love all star wars movies deal with it
I had a little childrens book for return of the jedi and i remember that it explained this scene so well telling how luke was using hate to fight vader and then realized what he was doing and didn't finish the duel.
I get it...you can't comprehend or accept that a point of view outside of what you believe exsists. You cannot fathom that someone can truely be unbiased and love all of it in equal messure. But those are the facts and you should accept them.
Because the fact of the matter is. I am a lover of Star Wars...purely and simply, I do not hate a certin part of it simply because it does not meet my unreasonable standards. There is nothing about Star Wars that I hate or find unworthy, not one damn thing.
@MaadDawg1 I personally can't wait. I've been praying for the end of the story ever since KOTOR. And now I will finally have closure. I will have no reason to play TOR at all. Because as much as I love Star Wars I'm just not that big of an MMO player. I don't like paying so much for a game.
You all are so biased it sickens me. It's fair to say that I am MORE of a fan then you...simply BECAUSE I love ALL of Star Wars equally. I refuse to belittle or degrade any part of it. I know as much Star Wars lore as you can possibly know without reading all the EU personally...I've read the entire SW Timeline since the Big Bang twice, I've spent days at a time studying and memorizeing as much of the EU as humanly possible. So dont you dare call me an idiot, a moron or less of a fan.
The original movies rock. They are awesome, they kick ass. But the prequels, make them feel soooo much better. This movie was meant to be a saga. And it is. All movies connect with each other in such an amazing way. Every episode makes you think of a particular scene and vice-versa. When I watch this scene I think of episode 3. When I watch episode 3 I think of episode 6. It's unexplainable. It's Star Wars.
I use to love this part of the soundtrack when I was a kid. However I never thought of it as a theme of "Luke on the verge of turning to the dark side", because the melody doesn't sound like that at all. Now, after seeing all 6 movies, this song too me represents Luke's last attempt to bring Anakin back to the good side. Luke knows if he fails, he's dead, so this was his last chance to diffuse his father. The "theme" is triumphant, sad yet victorious only because Luke succeeds.
I'm sick of everyone bashing the Prequals. We get it they'll never live up to your outrageous standards of film making. I love all 6 movies equally...but does that make me less of a fan then you? Not by a long shot.
@raedenjay That guy acts like such a moron about this review I dont even take him seriously. But regardless I always enjoy them...why? because I simply like Star Wars, this "review" made by some moron who dont take it seriously wont change that.
@TheRevanchists Star Wars just unfortunately sucks due to huge plot holes. It's an awesome concept, but it needs a reboot with a lot better of a primary story line.
@TheRevanchists Yes it's such an outrageous standard of film making. You know, making them at least as good as the originals. We're so impossible to please /sarcasm
@redvision350 Yes...so impossible that you attempt to deny their exsistence just because they weren't made the same way as your standards. Obviously you people fail to grasp that just because YOU think it sucks don't mean EVERYONE thinks it sucks. Just because they don't meet your "standards" don't mean their shitty movies. It's that simple, you just refuse to budge from your biased little pedastles that you place yourselves upon because you think you know how movies should be made.
the saber duelling is a little barbaric indeed but that's good as it's meant to reflect the fact that Luke has released his anger and is drifting close to the dark side, and it takes Vader by surprise.
This scene is emotional, but you should of included the scene where Luke is sitting with the shadow on one side of his face, and the light on the other. That part is amazing to me every time.
Continuity fail. A lightsaber is supposed to cut through anything. At 0:42 and on it clearly doesn't cut through the railing. God Damn Lucas if you are going to edit things for contuinity at least get your lightsabers consistent (also take out the blood from the cantina scene slice by obi wan, lightsabers don't cause bleeding).
WHOA I just noticed something. In Empire Strikes Back, when Luke and Vader are dueling, Vader forces Luke out onto a "catwalk" structure. At 0:40, thanks to the camera angle, the scene is briefly recreated; a narrow walk way over a bottomless chasm, except now Luke is on the offensive.
@Blink182link64 well then you don't understand he used Mind trick on vader. makes him invisible to him. but his feeling's was slowly giving away his spot until his anger takes over and reveals him.
@Blink182link64 hehe well I had the same thought as young "uhm.. he is under the god damn stair.. can't he see him really?? later in the years after hearing what hapends.. aaaaahhhhh my bad ^^
definetly the best fight in all of star wars the prequels lack emotion in the fights for more meaningless action where the originals had the emotion factor that made them great
Harry Potter has a lot in common with Luke, orphaned then they go off to learn how to fight the evil enemy, and then they find their father is the enemy who wants to kill them, (see deathly hallows).
@rhymenoceros3303 #1 and #2: Excellent. Scratch out #3, cause that shit is just terrible. I believe the 5 seconds where Anakin walks into the jedi temple and that single line delivered by obi wan are the ONLY salvageable parts from the new episodes. How come no binary sunset? No collapse of the Hoth defense? Yoda lifting the x-wing?
@rhymenoceros3303 I must admit that's a pretty good list. If I was to come up with one I would need to think that shit through! but props to your list...
@jordon321 They both had a bond but in order to survive Vader unknowingly tapped into that bond and actually sucked the life right out of her thats why the droids couldn't understand why she was dying and instead just said she lost the will to live
@rhymenoceros3303 I understand that, your comment on #3 was just a little confusing, i thought you meant birth literally, and said Vader instead of Luke and Leia
@Cmontferrat Asshole much the new trilogy was great maybe not as great as the original but still an incredible trilogy so how about you take that stick out of your ass and STFU
@rhymenoceros3303 I agree with you all the way. Funny thing is is that none of the "love" scenes from episode 2 made it on your list. They didn't make it on mine either. I think Attack of the Clones needed a little work on the script.
@goldAUsilverAG I admit that the love scenes weren't spectacular but they did get the job done but now that you mention it Anakin admitting he killed all those Tuskens was pretty emotional in my opinion
He wanted Luke to kill Vader, Vader's life support suit was a severe hindrance to both himself and Palpatine. So much like with Dooku, Palpatine wanted Luke to replace Vader by killing him.
@MondoWilfredo he didn't know what the hell he was doing, he changed his mind all the time, he wanted to kill him, the add him to the dark side, then take vaders place, then kill him again.
Have you guys ever noticed that in the prequels the jedi KNIGHTS fight more like shaolin monks, while these two actually fight like two knights in a duel? I just find that kind of ironic.
That's exactly what Lucas was going for. in the original trilogy, he wanted them to act as if the light saber was heavy and required two hands to wield.
@WhiteTiger950 true but all the cirutiry as well as the crystal is in the handle it would have some weight on it. Plus swinging it around like that is almost like swinging a 5 pound dumbbell for 30 minutes. It doesn't weigh much now but after the workout it feels like you are holding something that weighs 100 times than it does.
@Shanethefilmmaker Granted, the hilt may have some small weight. But I don't know if that would allow the lightsaber to have the smashing effect they show...
@Stopmotion300 Well, Lucas did say during movie commentary in ANH that vader was half robot and pretty much crippled, so that explains him. Luke maybe because he barely received full training that a jedi would get from childhood to adulthood.

Harry Potter has a lot in common with Luke, orphaned then they go off to learn how to fight the evil enemy, and then they find their father is the enemy who wants to kill them, (see deathly hallows).
Maynbe no one is old enough to know?
ANDYCHAT500 6 months ago
@ANDYCHAT500 I wonder if people will get pissed because of a spoiler like that...

For me the most emotional scenes in all of Star wars are(in no particular order)
1. This scene above
2. Vader killing the emperor
3. Vader's birth at the same time as Padme's death
4. The whole Order 66 sequence
5. When Obi wan yells to the burning Anakin "YOU WERE MY BROTHER ANAKIN"
rhymenoceros3303 6 months ago 46
@rhymenoceros3303 vader's birth was lame. NOOOOO!!!
NottinghamForest22 6 months ago
@rhymenoceros3303 #1 and #2: Excellent. Scratch out #3, cause that shit is just terrible. I believe the 5 seconds where Anakin walks into the jedi temple and that single line delivered by obi wan are the ONLY salvageable parts from the new episodes. How come no binary sunset? No collapse of the Hoth defense? Yoda lifting the x-wing?
Arcexey 6 months ago
@rhymenoceros3303 I must admit that's a pretty good list. If I was to come up with one I would need to think that shit through! but props to your list...

@rhymenoceros3303 4 me
1. This Scene
2. Luke finds his aunt and uncle dead
3. unmasking vader
4. vader saving luke
ww2guy100 5 months ago
@rhymenoceros3303 how did padme give birth to vader? so anakin is the husband and the son?
jordon321 5 months ago
@jordon321 They both had a bond but in order to survive Vader unknowingly tapped into that bond and actually sucked the life right out of her thats why the droids couldn't understand why she was dying and instead just said she lost the will to live
rhymenoceros3303 5 months ago
@rhymenoceros3303 I understand that, your comment on #3 was just a little confusing, i thought you meant birth literally, and said Vader instead of Luke and Leia
jordon321 5 months ago
@jordon321 Its okay but you gotta admit that makes Padme's death all the more tragic and it was truly Vaders fault for her death
rhymenoceros3303 5 months ago
@rhymenoceros3303 Vader is Anakin the child that was born was Luke.
BigAlzToyStore 5 months ago
@BigAlzToyStore I mean during the movie when Anakin was reborn as Vader while Padme died after giving birth to Luke and Leia
rhymenoceros3303 5 months ago
@rhymenoceros3303 scenes from ROTS? is this some sick joke? what a nutjob you are. please never procreate
Cmontferrat 5 months ago
@Cmontferrat Well that's your opinion bud, I liked all the Star Wars films equally, except Ep. 2, that one was pretty bad
MaadDawg1 5 months ago
@Cmontferrat Asshole much the new trilogy was great maybe not as great as the original but still an incredible trilogy so how about you take that stick out of your ass and STFU

@rhymenoceros3303 lmao @ thinking 4 + 5 were anything but unintentional hilarity

@rhymenoceros3303 naw what about the dying ewoks that was sooooo sad

@Jswizzle217 Oh I forgot about that it was sad : (
rhymenoceros3303 4 months ago
@rhymenoceros3303 I agree with you all the way. Funny thing is is that none of the "love" scenes from episode 2 made it on your list. They didn't make it on mine either. I think Attack of the Clones needed a little work on the script.
goldAUsilverAG 4 months ago
@goldAUsilverAG I admit that the love scenes weren't spectacular but they did get the job done but now that you mention it Anakin admitting he killed all those Tuskens was pretty emotional in my opinion

@Anriel2 Oh yeah forgot about that one especially since most of those kids were 5 thank god they didn't show him killing them.
rhymenoceros3303 4 months ago
@rhymenoceros3303 Dude, I cried at the cinemas next to my brothers and father when he said you were my brother anakin, I loved you! :(

wait did Palpatine want Luke to kill Vader and become his new apprentice or keep Vader and add Luke to his side?
MondoWilfredo 6 months ago
@MondoWilfredo Either way, Palpatine would have won.

@Neane1993 that didn't answer my question
MondoWilfredo 6 months ago
@MondoWilfredo He wanted Luke to kill him.
FROZENCH0SIN 6 months ago
@MondoWilfredo
He wanted Luke to kill Vader, Vader's life support suit was a severe hindrance to both himself and Palpatine. So much like with Dooku, Palpatine wanted Luke to replace Vader by killing him.
spidey1221 6 months ago
@spidey1221 Please do not mention the word "dooku" in the presence of this fine video.
Arcexey 6 months ago
@Arcexey
lol, my bad :)
spidey1221 6 months ago
@MondoWilfredo he didn't know what the hell he was doing, he changed his mind all the time, he wanted to kill him, the add him to the dark side, then take vaders place, then kill him again.
jordon321 5 months ago
You know, the sabers at that time were more "heavier" than the actual ones that looks like freaking dances with sabers.

compare the choreography with this Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn vs Darth Maul.
Markziz 7 months ago
Love the original fight scenes, because it actually looks like FIGHTING, not some carefully choreographed needlessly flashy feathery dance number.
Banminator 7 months ago
Have you guys ever noticed that in the prequels the jedi KNIGHTS fight more like shaolin monks, while these two actually fight like two knights in a duel? I just find that kind of ironic.
Stopmotion300 7 months ago
@Stopmotion300
That's exactly what Lucas was going for. in the original trilogy, he wanted them to act as if the light saber was heavy and required two hands to wield.
Ladiesman1447 7 months ago
@Ladiesman1447 That makes sense, they look like their swinging claymores.Clearly this fight was a battle of Strength.
Stopmotion300 6 months ago
@Ladiesman1447 Aren't lightsabers supposed to weigh nothing though? After all it IS a beam of light.
WhiteTiger950 6 months ago
@WhiteTiger950 true but all the cirutiry as well as the crystal is in the handle it would have some weight on it. Plus swinging it around like that is almost like swinging a 5 pound dumbbell for 30 minutes. It doesn't weigh much now but after the workout it feels like you are holding something that weighs 100 times than it does.
Shanethefilmmaker 6 months ago
@Shanethefilmmaker Granted, the hilt may have some small weight. But I don't know if that would allow the lightsaber to have the smashing effect they show...
WhiteTiger950 6 months ago
@Ladiesman1447 In that philosophy it is akin to a man who knows one style of martial arts to a man who uses a mix of styles.
Shanethefilmmaker 6 months ago
@Stopmotion300 Well, Lucas did say during movie commentary in ANH that vader was half robot and pretty much crippled, so that explains him. Luke maybe because he barely received full training that a jedi would get from childhood to adulthood.
