Mijn opa had bij sabena gewerkt als ontwerper van routes van vlak na de oorlog tot 1980 en ik vroeg hem eens : opa had sabena ook vroeger al financiele problemen? Waarop hij antwoorde van : Och menne jonge , kheb nooit nie anders gewete.

I think its really sad, because these airlines, from small countries, were something special. Swissair, Sabena,...

They had and have to fight very hard for respect and customers. There national network is small and so its a chink against the large airlines, like Lufthansa and Delta. But Swissair is not the only reason for the financial difficulties of Sabena.

As said before, by far the best tribute ever to our beloved airline.

And the legacy continues...people have not forgotten.

PS Why they committed suicide....SABENA was not just an airline! It was a comunity, a second family! After the bankruptcy most of us went through a mourning process, a process proven to be too much to handle for some of us!

Why didn't they try to find a similar job in an european airline company like Luxair, KLM, Air France.

When did Sabena end its service ? was it in 1997 or before...

Sabena and Swissair had the same destiny.

Two airlines one of the best in Europe....

One the reasons are the low-costs airlines companies.....

Low salaries, low charges, nothing inside the plane (no beverages, no meals) no warm even....

Not specifically. Sabena - the company - had to pay its debts. Those were at least partially paid in the bankrupt process. Now it's over. A new, different company (say Brussels Airline) could theorically use the brand "Sabena" again. But I don't know if it would be a good idea clients-wise

@airvalesco Well, it WOULD be a good idea, especially if the airline keeps its commitment to keep the African network as its priority. However, I am not sure it will happen. The mythical image of Sabena is not a good complementary option for its owners, Lufthansa, and it would overshadow the other Lufthansa subsidiaries, Austrian, Swiss (huge coincidence) and BMI. Only a 100% Belgian-owned airline would bring this solution, but the current format is perfect for the airline's ambition.
