She was a high elf who was captured, tortured and killed by The lich king. She was raised as a banshee but when his control over the scourge became weak she reclaimed her body and became who you see now.

Sylvanas was already killed in warcraft III. During the scourge of Silvermoon, Sylvanas led a group of High Elves against Arthas Menethill, which had enough of her insolence and killed her only to turn her into a Banshee afterwards. Her spirit bound to Frostmourne, she now had to server Arthas for an eternity, however, when the Lich King ordered Arthas to free him, Arthas lost a lot of his powers during the search. That's when Sylvanas escaped.. and the rest is history
