Just for laughs: The Mercedes 5 cylinder is rated at 125hp, give or take. GM's own turbodiesel was rated at 150hp. Given the GM was over twice the displacement, there was more torque, no doubt, but there's less reciprocating mass, and less friction in the 5 cylinder, so that's probably why it pulls so nice. Also worth considering: 1979 300SD weighed near 6,000 lbs, not too different from the 'burban. Also sounds like this one could use a set of injectors. Also check eBay for a tach amplifier.
Well...you can read quite clearly who understands and who does not. While the OM617 is small compared to any v8 diesel from the US,if all you're doing is driving that 'disgrace',or 'pos' or whatever will outlast ANYTHING those retards in Detroit could engineer.
Dude, I really admire you talent but I think you committed a crime by torturing this Suburban on the electric chair for the rest of its life!!! Just imagining that this could have the 454 under the hood while listening to the weak ass 3.0 diesel makes me cry.........
this is way to funny how the hell did you even get the transmission to mount to this GMC from the engine i bet the car wont move this is just for show.
Sacrilege !.... LOL I sometimes miss my old W123s. I've had two in the past. That grinding marble noise brings back memories....LOL. This is an old post... is it still running? Pick up an ML if you want a benz truck. I was really happy with mine. I'm currently on benz #7.... and e320. Will get another ML next. Drive tons better than a suburban IMO. Neat job on your part though. Oh.. vac. modulator on back of trans controls downshifting, those will crap out and it won't play nice.
Nice swap, looks like you got plenty of room around the engine for working on it, too. Not that the Benz motor needs much work. I have a four cylinder Mercedes diesel and it is by far the best car I've ever owned
Very nice swap. I can recommend a turbo upgrade which will make a great difference, a Holset hx35. U wont feel the difference between the old GM engine and this one. And like some other people said that this is the longest lasting diesel engine made by mercedes. My father owns an 82 300d and for the past 9 years he put over 300k on it, it still runs very smooth because he serviced it. Good luck with the car, and great job again!

wow, that is the biggest piece of shit i have EVER seen. wtf are you thinking putting a mercedes engine in a suburban... put a regular small block 350 u idiot....
@fudgeman333 Disgrace to Chevy? Do you know anything about Mercedes diesels? They run FOREVER. This thing may be slow, but I guarantee that the engine will be the last thing to go in this truck now. You say disgrace, I say that old Suburban should be honored to get such a venerable power plant, even if it is a bit... underpowered.
Cool swap, even if it is a bit impractical. That thing may be slow, but it'll be chugging on for years to come.
@mustangman442002 My dad once towed his 17,000Ib truck with his Mercedes 300sd non turbo. The transmission tore up a week later, X^D, but it was no 700R4. To tell the truth, it use to be a 450se, but we put in the good old 5 cyl diesel, so it had the same rear axle gearing of the 5cyl turbo.
It makes me wonder what rear axle gear is in his suburban. Man oh man does it ever make a difference. Changing from a 3.42 to a 4.11 would add more power, but I guess it just depends on the engine.
@fudgeman333 As much as I love GM's 6.2 V8s, I can still say it's a pile of shit compared to the OM617. Remember, Chevrolet had to be bailed out by Uncle Sam because they were making shit cars for 30+ years, while Mercedes was making huge profits.
@osp80 Indeed it was, but at the time GM owned Detroit. I suppose saying Detroit 6.2 would be more accurate, I just say GM because that's what most people recognize.
Good Lord that MB engine rattles more than a Cummins!!! Sounds good though, I love seeing people with imagination and ingenuity when it comes to diesel vehicles
to pinoybelle's RE: to my comment if you listen the engine has a sputter in it that is due to a dead or lagging cylinder the pump has nothing to do that means your injector isnt firing or your glow plug if it has it isn't working at the right temp.
That sucks. For a diesel engine to run a full-sized SUV, you want all the torque one can get, and to have a kick-down that works. You can't use it to tow travel trailers or anything heavy like that? That sucks. I do like the idea of shifting manually an automatic. I do that with my Toyota Corolla, particularly when going up steep hills downtown Seattle, or when I'm in Tacoma.
@dfettoguy2009 Some work was done to the Engine...i think they changed the timing Chain, it seems that the timing is off...that affects the pump too...........
Weird, man! I've heard of GMC Suburbans having diesel engine under the hood (I think they should be required, anyway), but I can't imagine a Mercedes-Benz diesel engine under the hood, let alone one with only 3-litres displacement. Is there enough power to move the huge rig?
@Seattlecarnut Well.. Its nothing like the 8Cyl motor, but it takes off and runs Just like the Car the motor came out of,BUT!!! since i have a auto Transmission in it AND i could not get the kickdown cable to work...i Drive it like a SEMI AUTO....first 1, then 2, then 3 and on the hiway 4 which is the overdrive.
this is mainly a city truck...No power to go mountain climbing,OH! and by the way....it is now powered by Kentucky Fried Chicken!!!..... Used Vegetable Oil !!!
@automotiveDIY If you're going to drive the thing around town, then who cares about power? If you're going to tow a travel trailer, then you want all the power and even more torque from the engine.
My Wife is PinoyBelle...Yes from Tagbilaran City Bohol, I'm Only useing her youtube account, Me? I'm From Trinidad and Tobago....and too old to smoke Ganga............
Good job Victor. Thats is one noisey engine. Is that an air conditioning compressor mounted on the passenger side on an angle???. I own a 1994 7.4 GMC suburban....better looking than a chevy.

do the mercedes inline 5 clynder deisel engines have the same or more power as the 4 clynder cummins motor ?
Not a Great Diffrence...I would Think...
pinoybelle 2 years ago
the cummins has wayyy more torque, nearly double.
also u must use a diesel convertor as the stall speed of the petrol one is to high.
Why didnt u use the mercedes one they make an automatic in diesel.
It looks professional but it must be really slow.
Get the pump turned up an raise the boost a little.
